Why so many rangers now?
Ranger is a popular class in every MMO, and it was always a popular class in GW2, the 2nd class made the most.
Now lets see how many of them will keep playing rangers after level 80.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)
Ranger has always been most used class. It just has a nice feel.

Rangers are the coolest class. The s/d weapon combo is just magical to play. It feels so graceful. The second I put a sword on my ranger I effectively stopped playing all other classes.
Plus PvE is ridiculously easy as a ranger.

How is being glued to the ground is “graceful”? Talking about sword 1.
I’m just leveling ranger, but I already fear that I’ll have to use longsword for dungeons.
Because some youtuber said it’s best for dps, so people will kick you if you use something else
You’re not glued to the ground, you’re in the air for leaping attacks. Once you get the timing down, I think you’ll like it. Use sword 2 and 3, and dagger 4 to dance around your opponents with out ever having to dodge. It’s very graceful.
It’s not some youtuber that said sword is best for DPS, it’s WAY better than risk-free ranged damage. As it should be. I won’t kick you for running a bearbow because I don’t usually kick people, but I won’t be mad when the rest of my party kicks you. It’s worth learning the grace of a sword. It’s like playing a piano, it sucks to learn it but now you can play Chopin.

When you see that sword 1 keeps you alive despite getting swarmed, while simultaneously dishing out sweet sweet damage (assuming you’re geared for Power), you will love it too.

I made a ranger myself. Needless to say, I enjoy playing it a lot. (Engineer main)
same im have level 80 full exotic ranger … cause it suck so badly in WvW thats why i am playing engineer full time now at WvW

It’s not because “some youtuber said it”, it’s because that youtuber was right. It’s not hard to tell when the ranger with a longbow is:
1) Not dealing any damage
2) Standing too far back to buff anyone or receive any buffs
3) Standing too far back to take any aggro off anyone
At LEAST take a greatsword. The damage isn’t as good as 1H sword but at least you’ll be dealing some damage and not being totally useless hiding behind some rock half a map away from the rest of the party.
Now lets see how many of them will keep playing rangers after level 80.
That bell curve effect…

I’d say they’ll cry on forums first then stop playing the class. Too bad few will cry AND keep on playing thus complaining again etc…

Ranger sword must be the most horrible weapon in all of guildwars the way it moves roots your character. It looks flashy but is absolute trash.

Sword the only weapon i carry on my ranger no matter what. I dont use much of the #1 but #2 + #3 is just fantastic.

You have to know what it’s doing. It’s giving you the equivalent of many many small free dodges, while doing good damage at the same time. Sword 1 saves lives in a messy melee.

As far as I can tell you don’t evade on the #1 chain while the second and third attack in the chain do root you during their execution.

How to be epic with sword AA:
Enter wvw and join a blob. Pref EBG
Turn off auto attack on #1 skill
Make sure you never select a target, ever, while i combat.
When your blob meets another blob. Activate RAO and spam 1111111111111111111111
Use the mouse to change direction as you fly around the battle, tagging chunks of enemies all over. Ps using QZ makes it even more fun

You can strafe easier if you turn off auto-attack.
You can use a long pre-cast time skill and cancelling it with a dodge mid-chain on your Sword auto-attack too. Use WH #4 then cancel it with a dodge.
You can also weapon swap mid-chain on your Sword to cancel the animation and be able to dodge.
And last, if you get used to the sword you will get know the animations in the chain where you can dodge freely.
Anet also mentioned their plan to “fix” Sword 1 rooting when they were discussing the Feature Patch months ago but they said it probably won’t make it in the patch which to no one’s surprise is true lol.
So there is still hope to have the same skill cap required to use Sword in PvE(with regards to strafing, dodging & cancelling) as other profession’s weapons.

Weird … that effect is one of the reasons I don’t like to use sword, my axe with fire+air do a very similar work with less risk.

Sword 2 doesn’t count because it takes longer to cast than half the tells in the game. >=[
It does for PvP, as well as the fact most champs or dungeon bosses (or human heavies) have massive tells. In many cases you actually need to delay using the skill because the boss tell is so massive.
You can’t use sword 2 as an instant dodge roll like dagger 4. You can use it just fine for evades though.

Less risk less reward, that and you don’t swoop around the battlefield like the god kitten angel of death when you’re using an axe.
As their mother, I have to grant them their wish. – Forever Fyonna
The sword has TWO short-CD dodges on the main hand alone. Combine with dagger offhand and you have three on a single set. The weapon’s clearly designed to compensate for the root. The problem isn’t the root getting you killed, it’s the snap-to-target screwing up positioning for the rest of the team.

exactly. I have a level 80 player and i am sad right now
Sword is good to use with auto-attack off (and obviously with auto-targetting off too)…
I only turn auto-attack on when soloing trash mobs…
