Not sure if this has been mentioned in other threads but I just noticed it. Sounds interesting. Almost like having Frost Trap as one of your weapon skills – every 8 seconds.

You gotta remember ice trap is a combo field, pulses. So if traited and they stay for the entire duration inside, thats a very long chill. You can blast or leap it for ice armor. Can be also used as combo finisher for projectiles and whirls so more chills
Personally, I’m not as interested in it as an particular eccentric I’ve briefly discussed it with :-p
Having ferocity on my Axe which has the worst power scaling of our weapons (unless getting double-taps on the AA) doesn’t appeal to me … I’m also curious why it isn’t 150 Ferocity per Axe like the Warrior’s Axe GM trait.
Turning my 3s Chill on a now 8s cooldown into an AOE isn’t that appealing to me either … though we’ll have to see how the AOE is.
If it’s a large AOE … awesome. If it’s just an AOE centered on my target … meh.
I do like inflicting chill … but I just don’t get the same “warm fuzzies” from this as I do when I look at several other traits.
But I’ll still test the crud out of it when given the chance
….good points about frost trap. I love me some Frost trap … add in shooting projectiles through it and you’ve just ruined someone’s day if they don’t have a cleanse. Easily something to giggle about.

A little speculation here. They mentioned re hauling traps. If Winters Bite acts as the old Frost trap they could simply drop Frost trap for a new trap. Smoke Field anyone?

… Smoke Field could be useful … I’d have to play around with it a bit more as a Ranger … it’s uses for us are not as obvious as those of Frost Trap given that some of us already have extensive experience playing around Frost Trap.
I’m really curious on how the AoE works. Does it bounce, is it radius AoE, or is it pbAoE?
Also, is only the chill AoE, or does the weakness gain the AoE property as well?
I’m not all that excited about it as I am with other things we are gaining, unless the weakness part is affected as well. THEN we’re talking, because we can run Protective Ward and weakness of F2 along with it and pick up some very much welcomed utility-through-debuffing.
it will be tough picking this over Beastly Warden, no matter what build youre running. but MH axe is cool in general because it can get your pet 25 stacks of might in a multi-opponent scenario. ac JC said i think it all comes down to how the aoe is going to work.

I agree with you if Beastly Warden ends up working the way it is currently worded … but I keep hearing people say that the tooltip is worded incorrectly and that it works for the pet, not us.
I’d edit that to be “in a Multi-opponent scenario or vs any opponent that brings AI (Mesmer, Ranger, etc.).”

Oh whoops, I was talking about the tooltip for Protective Ward … which would give another source of Weakness.

oh yeah, we’re still not sure how Protective Ward is going to work. hope it applies that protection to ranger, it would make it strong.

I think so too. It’s far too specific to a single skill on a single axe (mainhand) that it should just be made baseline. I don’t care for it either way, I’m just going to stick with Longbow, so I don’t think I’m biased on this.
Unless this AoE is going to be crazy large this really doesn’t feel like a grandmaster trait. It’s competing with Beastly Warden too, which looks like it’ll be a playstyle defining trait for beastmasters.
Maybe if it were dropped down into master tier it’d be more acceptable, but even then the ferocity is kind of pointless. If that ferocity were precision or power I might be more interested.
Would imagine the AOE to be similar to Sigil of Fire with a 240 radius at the target’s location. If not, probably a smaller one around 120-150, similar to some of the grenades on the Engineer.
I think it will be an AoE while it is travelling through the air. So a bit like Warrior’s Greatsword throw Blade Trail. Should be baseline either way since mainhand axe is kind of an AoE weapon.
