Many effective builds. Imo Ranger is one of the best roaming classes in this game.

So choosing Ranger over Engi for solo Roaming is a “viable” choice?

Here’s what I use to run. You can switch the runes up for Dwayna or something.

try spvp builds for solo roaming like the regen shout build, traps or spirits. also get wolfs and dogs. You’ll be fine. Ranger is my favorite for roaming and I designed mine to kitten on thieves
Spirits in wvw roaming? Not sure if that will work out all right. Trapper, regen/condi BM, full zerker lb/gs are all nice builds to roam around in wvw.

the problem with rangers is that there are so many bad ones, that it makes us look like we are a bad class, we can solo roam just as well as any other class.
I use a heap of different builds with varying success in different situations and i use most weapon combinations.
my most common trait set us is 0/20/20/0/20 and the last 10 points going in different places depending on my mood, i use celestial gear and weapons are usually great-sword plus something else (short bow, sword/whatever, axe/axe, axe/warhorn or long bow)
for armor you could use a mix of Knights, Cavalier’s and cleric
Is taking a Ranger above Engi for solo roaming a good decision then?
Every single class is “viable” for everything on the game…
Some classes are better at some things and lack at others, but overall anyone can do anything. That’s the point of the game.
To the point, yes ranger is very strong solo class. You can build cond bunker and be able to kill everyone 1v1 or 1vsmall group.
You can build power build, and kill people before they realise what’s going on. 1v lots is impossible with power build though unless they are n00bs or scaled lvl. You need to think and choose when to attack.
Also ignore the ranger QQ on the forum completelly. (friendly advsie)
not quite right.
Actually roaming rangers (mainly condition+regen+BM bunkers) take a big advantage of ppl’s impression of ranger being a free-badge class. Then most likely they just stop and fight you. When they realized you are a PD thief/PU mesmer-like, good ones just choose to leave, only bad ones choose stay and get killed.
Ranger is a good 1v1 class only if opponent choose to stay and fight, but still not best choice for roaming.

I play a power built ranger, and I solo roam at least 70% of my time. (The rest 30% is me grouped with 2 others)
The only class that has the ability to run away from me is thieves D/P thieves, (even though they are not much of a threat if they stay and fight), and a small % of warriors. Everything else dies pretty fast.
I would never roam as a bunker, because I have better things to do than chasing a player from one side of the map to the other.
@Damash, ranger over engineer or vice versa is a personal choice. Both professions are pretty strong roamers. In my own view I can survive better as a ranger, due to my vast experience using the profession. I feel that engineers just have different options than what rangers do, it’s all down to how well you can use one or the other.

I read through the messages but didn’t find a link to the build you use. Please share
There are a few pretty solid builds for wvw ranger roamer, it all depends on your preferred playstyle and naturally your experience as a ranger roamer. Please be aware of a few things regarding roaming:
- You won’t always find those nice 1 vs 1, so be ready to engage in large scale fights from time to time.
- If you know you are going to die via overwhelming numbers, don’t panic, learn from your mistakes and from these intense moments of pressure. The key to a strong roamer lies here, in the ability to make the best choices under pressure.
- sPvP in 1vs1 and in pug arenas the builds you want to test, make sure that you master your ranger since WvW introduces more variables and dangers to the roamers.
- Everything else you will learn as you go, do try to experiment with different builds and find that sweet spot where you feel that you rock.
My preferred WvW build:

Here is a recent video that a ranger shared using this build: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGuzYBmFd5E
Some of the above posts have great examples of builds that work as roamers, but note how they all understand how to fight their enemies. In a 1 vs 2 situation, knowing your enemy will really mean the difference between life and death, unless your enemies are highly experienced; however most WvW players tend to underestimate rangers so as a roamer you can use this to your advantage.

Moving from a Glass Elementalist to a Glass LB/GS Ranger and eating Healing Signet warriors is fun… Nothing more satisfying than a warrior thinking they are going to run away from you only to be caught and killed by said Ranger!
should this build work wel? http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMAQJATRjAVV29VKWsWCili90nmCN1/PjYlevgC+0A-jgxA4uAlFLiGbFsIasqGMtKRUtLpIa1BAtA-e
In my opinion, the best use of a longbow is with a lot of power and crit damage.
There are basically two schools of though for roaming. The condi bunker guys that mostly want to duel or take on 2 or 3 guys just for fun, and the crit damage longbow/melee guys that want to quickly solo objectives and ambush and kill players in seconds.
Your build will work because just about anything will if you play well, but I think you have a “worst of both worlds” scenario.
If you try roaming with a longbow you are asking to die. Longbow at this point is a back of the zerg or in/out of shelter defense mechanism. You take it into a 1v1 or 1vX and you might as well ALT+F4.

This is so wrong it’s not even funny.
What are you doing with the longbow that makes you think that? Seriously, if you have the time or care at all take a moment to tell me what actions you would take with the longbow in a 1v1 situation.
Here’s mine:
weapons – Longbow (sigil of int)/Sword+Axe (Sigil of bloodlust/int)
[at the sigil patch Longbow will be Int/Leeching for the heal and unmitigated free damage and Sword+Axe will be the same]
Open in Longbow
Close to 900 range to target
Point Blank Shot [autocrit Opening Strike] → Swap → Path of Scars [autocrit Int]
Cast TU, because it’s a heal designed to maintain your current level of health, you want to maintain full
Fight as usual in Sword/Axe, making sure to pop Axe #5 REGARDLESS of what you are fighting because if you cancel Axe 5 early you still have the Retal for the full duration you would have spinning (Do this it’s worth it! No one ever does this!)
When Path of Scars is finished recharging…
Path of Scars → Swap → Point Blank Shot [autocrit Int] → Hunter’s Shot [usually hits when chained directly after a KB, stealth, gain a bit of distance]
Ping target with 1, use 2 if you suspect stealth
When Point Blank Shot is finished recharging…
Point Blank Shot → Swap → Path of Scars [autocrit Int]
you get the idea
the purpose of doing this is to chain burst your opponent every 15 seconds
There are improvements to this you can do like running a Signet of the Beastmaster built and tossing in Signet of the Hunt
You can pre-pop this skill and have the 150% damage on yourself for about 16 minutes so have the Sigil effect on you already at the first step and activate it again at the swap so you can do two guaranteed crits that both have 150% damage applied to them
If you want, you can also pair this with a Hawk/Eagle for the very low cooldown F2, this is probably the only F2 that will be available ever 15 seconds when you do your burst rotation, use it then (and not randomly in between) so you keep your damage bursts concentrated, that’s how you kill
There’s probably more but seriously, am I the only person who does this? Longbow is second only to the Sword for its usefulness in a 1vX. This is our stealth weapon!
We have essentially 3 skills that hit (crit) hard enough to qualify as burst with enough Power and Crit Damage. Maul, Path of Scars, and Point Blank Shot. Two of them are ranged and can be chained together—so why aren’t more rangers doing it?

I don’t use offhand axe, but I agree with what you’re saying here. The idea of Longbow being terrible in 1v1 situations is insane to me, as it usually does so well there.
I’ve said it before, but Malicious Training with Jungle Spider/Wolf or Jungle Spider/Other Spider makes the longbow so much more deadly.
I’ll correct you. Longbow isn’t bad against other range classes or easily kiteable ones. But any Thief, Warrior with a shade of brain or Engineer will probably kill you in a second. Any class with Immobilize, condibom, snares and gapclosers will trash you, because LB is useless vs. them. Strafe is slower than regular running, often “breaks” your skill, kiting in close range won’t allow you to cast things like Hunter’s Shot or PBS, not to mention laughavle Rapid Fail. Instead, you have to face your opponent which means backpaddling and waitfor whole shot, animation and aftercast to finish.
It doesn’t work against any proper roamer. That’s why all roaming rangers run condibunkers
Btw, to get some damage from Path of Scars, your foe has to be either dumb or immobilized. It returns in straight line, which means 2nd hit and pull might be avoided by simple walking. But it’s okay against dummies.

I play most “ranged” classes. Between an engineer and a ranger for roaming here is what you will find.
1. Ranger is much better at single target kills.
2. Engineer is much better outnumbered because of all the knockbacks, fields, immobilizes and ways to manage the enemy that is not the target.
3. Engineer is SIGNFICANTLY harder to learn to play just because you have 19+ skills.
4. Ranger requires you to both be at range and melee. The engineer can be a pure ranged character (bombs being PBAE).
5. Ranger allows for much faster and more accurate targeting.
6. Ranger struggles to get away from a battle quickly. Sure Swoop is effective but not nearly as much as rocket boots after stealth.
7. Ranger kills faster if all things go well.
8. Engineer has far more conditions to put on
9. Ranger has a better heal.
10. Engineers have better healing (with blast finishers).
You won’t go wrong either way.
