I am wondering what your top three favorite attacks are and why. If you want you can post your least favorite instead. Mainly just getting ideas for community and devs what makes ranger fun or not so fun.
1. Barrage. I love this attack. raining pain on the enemies, it cripples them, and I dont have to worry about attack being obstructed when firing.
2. Swoop. awesome animation where sometimes I can actually see the giant eagle instead of it being in spirit form, helps in certain jump puzzles where I cant make the jump, and closes in on enemies or runaway in most cases.
3. Call of the Wild. Nice buffs, good duration like the animation of howling wolf in the forest with full moon behind. Allows me to keep up with, and help the zerg get to wherever we headed(kinda like the skald/minstrel/bard of DAOC)

I REALLY like Whirling Defense, the whole swirling aura of awesome that creates a really cool pulse animation on the bubble i make before launching a projectile back is just great, i love it!!

A close second would be Maul, i love how the bear appears just moments before ending some poor enemy, or at least doing large amounts of damage and bleeding to them!!

And then lastly i’d have to say hunters shot, for what ever reason when i use hunters shot i just feel like i’m sealing their fate, maybe it’s because i play a lot with a group of friends ankittenhe “Marker/Caller” of the group (something i did a lot in GW1 as well) and thus when i call someone and then throw 10 stacks of vuln on them and throw my pet at them they tend to just melt…

1. Crossfire. I am using this skill for like a good 80% of the time, so why the hell not.
2. Shortbow #5. I forget the name off the top of my head, but an quick interrupt on demand is so, so, so useful. In PvE and PvP. Love the feeling of seeing someone trying to heal and interrupting it.
3. Call of the Wild. Bleh. Buff too good.

Longbow #2 + Quickening Zephyr + Asuran Radiation Field (or any other combo field, really). PewPewPewPew!!!

Also just Shortbow #1 with the above as well – talk about feelin’ SPEEDY. There’s just something so fun about having all the skills come off cooldown at about the same time, dropping the Rad Feld and just… unloading and watching the conditions stack up.

Short bow goes like this, 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,2,3,4 more 1,1,1,1,1,1, maybe a 5 or 6 or7 or 8, sometimes, but mainly 1.

Occasionally an F2 or F1, maybe an F3 on the odd occasion.

Exciting stuff !

Hunter’s Shot at the beginning, Crossfire for life. And then I throw Flame and Spike traps followed by Sharpening Stone. Pet gets aggro, so Barrage. Quick switch to Axe/Warhorn and Hunters Call’s immediately followed by Call of the Wild. Axe #3 and #2 → Switch back to Longbow ^^ .

Celestial scrubs, just die already…

Lightning Reflexes because it sometimes can be really good.

Spirits because they look pretty awesome. Too bad they’re virtually worthless.

Swoop, I feel like Yoda as i leap from victim to victim. Also fun to piss zergs off as you go flying in a mere second out of range from all their attacks and watching on the animations stop just behind you as you continue to flee. Eagle animation is sweet to boot.

GS Block/Counter attack, great pre-buff epic post

crossfire, I enjoy the positional aspect of the effect. What i wish is that all autos would provide some sort of condi on flanking, and that your pet would get a flanking effect on its auto. It would force opponents to work more to keep us at their front and actually take our pets into account. It would also reinforce the mobility aspect of our class.

Any skill that interrupts. I’d use a weapon that did 0 direct damage if every skill was an interrupt. Hell, I’d wine and dine that weapon…

I also love Swoop and Serpent’s Strike for the animations and utility, and Counterattack because it’s kittening amazing.

The thing that kills it completely for me is the fact that you cannot move while using it. Considering a ranger is supposed to be all about mobility, it is peculiar indeed for an attack to root you.

John seems to agree with this, as is evidenced by making the greatsword’s block ability no longer root you. Now all he needs to do is to do the same to the greatsword’s sword throw part of the block ability as well as the off-hand axe swirl, and we’re taking a step in the right direction.

Yea, and sadly, I don’t see this changing anytime soon since they would have to change the character animation for all races and genders, which would be costly. They were able to fix the GS block to be moveable because the block animation didn’t really affect the lower body of the character, meaning they just changed the skill to only change the animation of the character’s upper body.

With Whirling Defense, the character jumps around and uses lower body movement, so I doubt they could just make the character move without them looking like they were floating.

Hopefully, I’m wrong, but I’m not holding my breath over a change to this anytime soon.

1. The one that calls down hawks is fun to watch as people fall to the floor under a mass of hawks…

For an offensive power build the warhorn is still better than the off-hand axe. Warhorn is simply the best weapon we have right now, with its swiftness, fury, and angry birds.

For an offensive power build the warhorn is still better than the off-hand axe. Warhorn is simply the best weapon we have right now, with its swiftness, fury, and angry birds.

Axe/Warhorn Sword/Axe is what I ran for my offensive power build and it worked out very well, I didn’t take a 2 handed because I wanted to take advantage of chill whenever I swapped +bloodlust

1. Longbow #4: Point Blank Shot – I like knocking people off cliffs, interrupting enemies trying to finish allies, and my favorite is interrupting a warrior as he tried charging at me.

2. Greatsword #4: Counterattack – I like to block ranged attacks. I REALLY like to block melee (especially a thief who tries to backstab me) and then kick them in the gut. It is a really cool animation and makes you feel like a badkitten.

3. Lonbow #2: Rapid Fire – Pair this with quickness and you can pump out damage pretty quick with your pet. Also the animation with quickness looks awesome.

And it’s not about thinking outside the box, it’s about understanding that some choices are better than others, even if some choices are still ok. Just because I support the popular opinion on this doesn’t mean I haven’t considered the alternatives.

i’ve actually start loving Hornet sting and monarch leap. it’s essentially a double leap that you can use to distance yourself from chasers. first one is an evade with a slow, and the second jump puts you at a slight distance from chasers.

i don’t know how much i’ve survived because i chained a 6 chain dodge. completely denying 80% of the damage coming at me by 6 people.

It’s not a wet towel persay; it has some really great attributes that make it quite strong from a mechanics perspective; but it needs to have higher damage to reward the risk factor of taking a medium armor profession without many OSHI utilities into extended close-quarters combat. The recharges feel quite fluid, at least to me, but I always end up switching when I want a true burst.

Lol risk factor? We evade every 3rd attack and have a good 3 second or so block… Idk about you, but when I want to not die I just grab my greatsword and swoop into a mob of enemies… However a damage buff would make me happy =D

PS: I just remembered Hunters Call when used on oak hearts, lol nothing says awesome like summoning the eagles from Lord of the Rings to descend upon an Enemy and rip them to shreds!!

There is always a higher risk factor entering melee combat on a medium/light armor profession than on a heavy armor profession. In addition, you must actually land the first two attacks in order to get the evade on third; this requires time spent in melee range, not evading, in order to get the evade on attack that you want.

Or do you mean to tell me that you’re perfectly comfortable using your greatsword against anybody without ever weapon swapping, and never feel pressured to use dodges when you could have been attacking to earn your evade?

Acording to ANet my favorite skill is just 111111111111111111111111.

But GS has some great animations indeed, just sad its a wet towel.

It’s not a wet towel persay; it has some really great attributes that make it quite strong from a mechanics perspective; but it needs to have higher damage to reward the risk factor of taking a medium armor profession without many OSHI utilities into extended close-quarters combat. The recharges feel quite fluid, at least to me, but I always end up switching when I want a true burst.

Most of the time yes I will tell you that, however there are -some- scenarios I dodge roll because I’m about to take an icicle to the face and the enemy I just was killing died/left, or that I’m in an AoE death field…

Edit: I’m not saying there’s NO risk factor for being in Melee, just not on the greatsword for ranger, on my mes/ele/thief/guardian I’d say there actually is -some- risk factor, but the fact we can turn GS auto attack into a double evade, or just evade seemingly endlessly while we continue out onslaught just completely eliminate the risk factor most of the time, especially if you can stand in your healing spring, because you also can swoop for an extra heal of ~1.5k.

The only class that I have issue going toe to toe with in Melee is a hundred blades warrior because they can stun me more then once so I get forced into eating hundred blades which is about the equivalent of eating a drake breathe attack… I can usually survive the first one or two of them, but the third one will get me every time… Then again that’s why I bring ranged weapons too so I can kite the silly pure Melee people like hundred blades warriors…

I just started playing with off hand axe this week, and it’s actually pretty amazing—but not for the obvious reason. Sure, you can reflect ranged attacks, but I actually find where the ability shines is in melee. I run a Beastmaster/Marksmanship/10 Skirmishing for 30% pet crit, bird burst build, and the damage output of my pets simply skyrockets when you put a free 12% damage increase on an overzealous warrior who thought it would be cool to attack away during my 6 seconds of invuln+Whirling Defense.

You should try longbow and whirling defence. Thats a whopping 20+ stacks of invuln lol. It sounds like we are using the exact same build cheers ^^, no one seems to be running is amazing build yet.

That’s not kiting… however that’s a nifty trick i need to try because that may actually make me a hundred blades killer as well… i always try dodging AWAY because for what ever reason i keep thinking i can’t go through players (GW1 habits)

Kiting is keeping a distance between you and your enemy, you know, like you do with a kite… IE imagine theirs a string between you, if you get to close (where they can hit you) then the kite wont be able to fly and will crash on the floor, where if you can keep the distance open the kite will stay up in the air! (that’s always how i’ve imagined it, then again i’ve actually flown a kite xD)

The definition of kiting as MMO players know it does not really have a match in an actual dictionary as far as I know. I consider it kiting because I’m keeping away from the player’s weapon as much as I can, not necessarily the player. If I’m behind a warrior and he uses HB while facing his current direction, he’s not going to hit me; my distance to him at this point is irrelevant if I’m doing damage. Kiting is a garbage term to apply to this game anyway because so few long-range sets are actually capable of maintaining the distance with the game’s myriad gap closers.

To avoid arguing semantics, one could say that it is very possible to avoid a lot of damage while maintaining a comfortable melee range with your foe; it just takes a bit more analyzing of your opponent’s movement/tactics.
