As you know, sword #1 alternates “slash” which has no gap closer, “Kick” which allows you to cripple at 400 and “Pounce” that makes ou leap at 430.
Beauty of the sword it that you can maintain contact to your target once you are close. The issue is to get close…Since melee ranger has no initial gap closer when using the sword. Not on sword, not on off-hand not on utility. That is strange, isn’t it?

But there is something stranger: sword’s jump happen when you do not want it! For example when your target goes in stealth, you start to chain jumps… In the best case you get far from you target when actually you wanted to finish it. In the worst case you perform the infamous ranger cliff jump.
I cannot believe that someone intented to make a melee weapon that does not allow you to get close to target when you want, but makes you jump away from it when you do not want. :p

A nice fix would be to get the 3rd or the 2nd ability comes first (and be activated only when you have a target selected in range). You would jump , then cripple, then hit.

Simple and logical.

It would be nice to know the dev’s current stance the sword. It’s one of the most controversial weapons in the game. I think at one point Jon Peters said they were happy with the sword, but it continually gets raised as in issue on the forums. Are they still happy with the sword or have the constant complaints caused them to take another look at changing the skills?

If nothing else, another mainhand melee dps weapon would be nice. 1H sword is the only ranger weapon that pumps out okay damage, which makes the awkward and frustrating #1 even more of an issue. Kinda the same thing engineers face with grenades, which are almost as terrible to use as ranger sword but are similarly their best available option.

I just wish I could dodge doing the chain. Like they would implement the ability to cancel the animation by dodging or using serpent/stalker strike.

Preachin’ to the choir, brother. I won’t go near it.

Then again, I’ve more or less given up on the ranger as a whole until some serious changes for the weapons come down the pipe, along with some sort of AoE mitigation for pets.

(Not holding my breath on either count.)

Whilst turning off auto attack might be a solution, no one is looking for carpal tunnel. I shied away from an engineer because I did not relish button spamming.

Instead of a player side fix, more than 1 profession really needs a “stop attack” button besides the escape which in the heat battle is sometimes unresponsive, pops the whole menu on you or.. you get the idea.

Closest thing I’ve got is stow weapon on mouse3. But even that doesn’t work well enough.

“Stop Attack” is this too much to ask?

Theres nothing wrong with either pet nor sword. Learn to time your evades etc. Spec into BM. Playing the ranger is exactly that a pet class, 50% user 50% pet, it’s like playing 2 characters, learn to manage them, you can’t expect to go full zerker etc and not have a squishy pet, it’s give or take, pet necros have to give up every single utility bar to slot pets, do you see pet necros complaining about anything other than AI problems? The only that that needs to be fixed on pets is F2 speed. And if you have any doubt, I suggest you watch the video in my link.

Don’t fall prey to the “well I can’t do it, so fix it” mentality.

You can work around it, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be fixed. I’m sure if you tried you could beat Super Meat Boy if it had a 3 second input delay, but being able to work around that wouldn’t make the controls not garbage.

It’s pretty crystal clear the devs don’t take the Ranger profession seriously. I doubt these rooting issues will ever be fixed (also concerns Autoattack on Spear underwater).

The only time I can see myself using the sword is bunkering in sPvP on a Healing Spring, taking advantage of the leap finisher every now and then. Everywhere else… no. Lack on control and dodge priority is total crap.

The issue is the auto-attack can’t be interrupted by dodging, switching off auto-attack/sheathing is just a work around its not a solution. Pretty much every melee auto-attack combat allows you to dodge away interrupting the combo, swords should just get it since using Hornet’s Sting isn’t always the best specially in certain fractals or when fighting on an edge.

My point was not about root, but about gap closer.

Sword is a very good defensive weapon, thanks to evade. It can be be a very good offensive weapon if you manage to trick the ennemy in your range while he thinks you are just a bowman.
But if you try to play more offensive to catch up with an elusive ennemy , you can not close distance. You have to fall back to bow or axe for range attack, or greatsword if you are a pure melee.

In other word it is quite easy to counter sword when you know how it works, you just need to create distance before ennemy player can user sword #1. most people have not realised it cause they are not used to play against sword ranger.

Ranger is not just about bow, devs made that clear. I think it is only fair to give a gap closer to a melee player.

Not using Hornet’s Sting or Serpent’s Strike, they have cast times, I get that.

But the dodge rolls?

I think we need the ability to dodge roll OUT of our auto attack animations.

Oh, and please don’t say “Just turn off auto attack!” It’s clunky, it’s not fun, and most of all, it’s annoying.
If you do it, go for it. Not all of us want to be clicking on a button forever…

I don’t find it to be mobile. As the OP said, sword has no gap closer, the autoattack chain root you in place with autoattack on and make you jump around uncontrollably if you turn it off.
I’d like to use this weapon, i read every advice from the famous ones on here and watched every video i could find about the tricks. I turned off autoattack, then i turned it on, the result is always the same, i cannot control my toon. And I HATE it.

I think it definetly need some improvement.

Sword 2 should be flipped, Monarch’s Leap should be the first part and Hornet Sting the second bit, so you can use Monarch’s Leap two open combat and Hornet Sting as the get out of trouble. That alone would just change the suit.

I meant mobile as in dancing in and out of the enemy’s range. A gap closer might break the weapon in my opinion, but that’s just me I guess, no biggie.

Actually, Serpent’s Strike can gap close a tad, and the auto attack does chase people on its own if they try and run, because of Kick’s Cripple and Leaps…well, leap.

I love 1H Sword, I just want to dodge out of its’ auto attack is all.

I keep sword on auto and I feel it’s good – except for that dodge. It should dodge. And I do like the idea of swapping the order of the attacks – the jump first makes sense.

Other than that, with a torch and traps, it’s great for keeping an opponent locked into an area for your fire and pets.

I do not support reversing Monarch’s Leap. It felt wonky at first, reversing it puts the evade on the second end of the active, and that could be clunky. I much prefer dodging out, then in to get an Aura, or staying out.

What I will suggest is retuning Serpent’s Strike to be like new Flanking Strike. Both of them used to send me off of edges if I was in a hard place, and now FS doesn’t. Serpent could be tightened. And between Monarch’s and Serpent’s, both sword evades really suck if you want to use them with a cliff on your rear or right.

You also raise a good point with the utility as well. We seem to lose our run speed increase from our signet as soon as we enter combat. Now I use the active on it but other than the fact that you can have the active effect buff up and the passive going at the same time, I find it to be very underwhelming. I much rather have 10s of +33% run speed as the active effect for use while in combat.

As for the sword, not just the sword really. Dodge rolling should interrupt any action you are currently making and execute.

They already have skills that change (longbow 1 with damage, and longbow 4 with how far the enemy is pushed back) based on distance. Why can’t other skills do something similar?

Take Hornet’s Sting and Monarch’s Leap. Which one is available should be ranged based. Over 200 (or whatever max range the sword has) and it is Monarch’s Leap. while 200 or less and it is Hornet’s Sting. This way, you have the skill you need available in the situation you need it in.
