hammers and a trap suggestion
hey all,
dont you guys feel that rangers should be able to use hammers? i mean they could in Gw1, and i really think that this weapon fits into the ranger repertoire nicely. perhaps….also, since rangers have absolutey NO source of blind (other than pets, which is trash), what a bout a blind trap?
something like 4 or 5 pulses of blinding and a bit of dmg per pulse. standard trap that would increase our survivability to somedegree and help with team fights quite a bit as well.what does everyone think?
cough http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Solar_Flare cough cough
I do agree though that we should have dust trap in our repertoire of traps, that was a fairly infamous one after all…
As for the hammer… yeah i’m STILL trying to figure out why they didn’t give rangers hammers… i mean for crying out loud the bunny thumper was a HUGE thing in GW1, i mean seriously! Even the AC story mode ranger boss was a Bunny Thumper!! I was REALLY surprised when i found out we could use GS but not Hammer… that still doesn’t make sense to me…
We likely -don’t- have a hammer because they want to try to not have blast finishers + a lot of fields… and yeah… rangers kinda have traps (2 fields) warthog (2 fields) combo that’d lead to you being able to cause way to much awesomeness with one build compared to other profs and that’d just be pretty imbalanced… and then if you didn’t put a blast on a hammer people would rage because that’s pretty much the only places that blasts are on… and yeah…
PS: I still want a hammer…

Well, yes, we do have that sun spirit thing. But in order to get it… We would have to use a spirit. And spirits are awful.
I can’t speak for the hammers, I didn’t play Guild Wars very long. I don’t really think there is a reason why we couldn’t use them, as we can use greatswords as a physical weapon. They’re probably about the same weight.
But in Guardians and Warriors, the role of the hammer is typically crowd control, AoE damage, and defensive abilities. The greatsword already kind of does that. I’m not saying it couldn’t be done, but then it would be a whole different thing to balance.
I don’t think, ESPECIALLY at this point in the Ranger’s career, that it would be prudent to add it. They can’t balance what we already have.
lol know what would be sweet though? if they gave rangers the staff weapon (more of a walking stick in this case) and had it as the trap weapon would be a call back to the original gw1 trappers that req the use of the staff for the large energy bank and would give a whole new meaning to the trapping spec as well as give room for smoke trap and others like barbed trap room to come back into play with the profession, hell not all 5 skills need to be trap 1 or 2 can be bludgen things with the staff

Staff was also used for spirit spamming, i think that the staff for ranger should be a combo of both traps (in this case it’d be magical effects based off the traps) and some spirits, for example “Dust Storm” create an area around the ranger constantly dealing damage and blinding all enemies in the area, and they could also add “Edge of Extinction” apply weakness, poison, cripple, and bleeding to all nearby enemies for 5 seconds (make it have a long cast for obvious reasons)

For the Hammer if it was anything like in GW1 the job was to knock them on the floor and then the ranger and the pet would proceed to smash their face in making them unlikely to survive, in other words it was burst, burst and more burst, combined with deep wound (mortal strike for you ex WoW players) and daze… oh it was awesome…
EDIT: Spirits aren’t horrible, they’re quite amazing when you know how to use them, i highly suggest learning them (assuming you want to support your allies, if you don’t care about your allies it doesn’t really matter)

I agree that spirits have the potential to be awesome. They require way too much micromanaging to make them effective right now. The ROI is way off.

ROI? Not gonna lie, if they buff spirits survivability back up (oh god how i long to become a god once more…) i’m going to have a hayday with that because of how brokenly stupid i could make a build if it had survivable spirits… the change they’d likely -have- to make to prevent kitten holes like me from taking advantage of it would be to buff what the spirits themselves actually -do- and leave them super squishy, that or they’re going to nerf spirits but buff their survivability and people would -still- not use them, hell even less people -would- use them if that were the case.

Sorry, ROI is return on investment.
I know some people are using spirits pretty effectively, but that doesn’t mean they’re good. Michael Phelps could probably beat most people in a race wearing a chicken suit, but that doesn’t mean everybody should start wearing a chicken suit to the pool.
I really wish spears were land based weapons. I loved Polearms in WoW, and they had spears in the original guild wars as well.

lol that would be REALLY funny to see tbh…
that being said, i never said i don’t think spirits need some spicing up, currently their fairly dull with their set em and forget em play style in PvE, and there’s only so many places you can set em in PvP at each capture point to put them, well unless you’re baiting someone into killing them/using them as a shield but that’s a different story…
They’re definently not bad though, they’re just kinda meh (you know like all of our utilities) hopefully the patch in 9 days will fix some of that.

I’m not gonna hold my breath. I got excited for the last update where we were promised a lot of changes. Even though I already felt like Rangers were in a pretty decent place, I was still excited for the promised improvements.
This time I’m not gonna take any chances. As long as they don’t nerf anything, I’ll be happy. Haha!
Also, I would totally use a hammer on my Ranger. Especially if it was in the same vein as Warrior and Guardian hammers. Love the control you get with those babies.

Personally im not a huge fan of hammer warriors (never played them, but from the ones i’ve fought against ALL they do is CC absolutely 0 damage it’s just like, yes yes, go away you’re just a minor inconvenience, are you done? Yes? ok, and then they die), however hammer guardian OMG is that fun, i love the combo field generated off of Auto attack + the leap for aoe retal, not to mention my favorite guardian move is the line of immobilizing awesome lol

i didnt count the spirit blind because it is absolutely terrible. a spirit is not a skill in my honest opinion. but i would still like to see a useful source of blind that alot of other classes enjoy using defensively, and since rangers have very little defensive skills that dont require a full commitment ie. traits to 30 or something stupid for that GIANT cooldown of dmg immunity, and protect me = dead pet so yeah i would be pushing for “sand trap” harder than a hammer, but a hammer would still be cool to have as a ranger
All I have to say about the hammer is, Bunny Thumper!!! Who knows what I am talking about?

I was running a hammer and axe/mace build for a while that was on the Warrior forums and it was TONS of fun. Knockdowns for days.
You know what’s REALLY fun on Guardian? Pre-casting Banish then teleporting to an enemy with Judge’s Intervention and launching them off of cliffs or other high objects. So much fun in W3.

That is awesome thing to do on a guardian lol, another fun thing to do is use empower before doing that so you have 12 stacks of might, so much fun =D! I feel like this is getting a bit off topic though lol
