how do you beat dp thief?
3 questions.
What build do you run?
What game mode, WvW or PvP?
What type of D/P thief, the normal power build or that cheese perma stealth?
Typically, a condi trap ranger or a power longbow ranger are hard counters to a zerk d/p thief.

If you run something close to this build you shouldn’t have any problem with d/p thieves. If you do, you simply need to improve on your mechanical skills. Keep dueling thieves until you understand how to counter them.

Just try to set up your bursts and bait those defensive cooldowns. And don’t camp LB unless they run. Everything else kinda depends on play style I guess.
Also don’t forget that the taunt can bring them out of SR very well.

You should use the taunt from the pet wisely versus thieves, it’s extremely good against them. When they are taunted, they cannot headshot you. If you Point Black Shot them, they can’t headshot you either. Using a wolf fear? Nope they can’t headshot you. There are plenty of opportunities to burst thieves. As soon as you gain your stealth with Hunter’s Shot, put a Barrage on top of yourself to make the thief hesitate opening on you.
I think watching someone play the build you are using also might help you understand how to play. I think I am the ranger that streams the most often when it comes to Conquest PvP.
If you find you are struggling too much with stuns then you can switch Entangle for Strength of the Pack.

Well, you chain lock him and kill him.
They’ve got 10k health. Sic em or interrupt the BP/HS combo and they’re absolutely toast most of the time. d/p thieves don’t actually have much stealth.
they just stand in barage and 1 spam me to death while im stuck there casting the skill i block them with gs meh chuck down a blind and continue to 1 spam. in your vids i saw you get killed by thieves many times really fast even tho you had your attention elsewhere but it was still quick.
taunt doesn’t seem to do much at all they hit it once and then go back to killing me =\

Just run a condition build. You will have enough tank to survive the burst and they will melt in your conditions.
It sounds like you are eating a lot of damage because you are standing still too much.
You will want to move around as much as possible. The less chances they get to pull off Backstabs, the better the fight will go for you. You will need to slot at least 1 stun break, usually Lighting Reflexes, if they are hitting you with Basilisk Venom a lot.
Know that they will often only have about 3 seconds of stealth each time they go invisible and if you are still in combat several seconds after they use Shadow Refuge, that means they didn’t run away and you need to keep moving to avoid BS.

The best thing to do is never use a longbow build period. In fact I try to never use it regardless of what I’m doing. But I"ve had had a 90% success rate against all manner of thieves using a rabid trapper build with axe/torch.

they dont need to bs me to do stupid amounts of damage.. they dont need to stealth.. they just dodge pb shot and interrupt rf with headshot =\ and 1 spam will kill me while im in gs after they use bp on me twice and i try remove it due to how slow it is and the fact they can dodge alot
i dono.. ranger isn’t for me i guess.

Or you haven’t put the amount of time it takes to know how to play the profession. Since how long do you play it?
With the build I have linked I can’t remember the last time I have lost a 1v1 to thieves with the build being so strong versus them. You basically have all the tools to face them.
Give this a try, http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vNAQJATRjUqQJL2wCusAVLGyEKPxTgG/rhF4x7kNAOgDWF5B-TZBFABCcIAEvMQbXBAAeAAzt/AA
More cc, more pets to body block, better mobility, and a better heal. Thieves can only hit 2 targets, try and the 3 pets between you and the thief and he’ll go down pretty quick, plus the bird hits him hard as hell.
Here are a few tips you may find helpful.
Use line of sight to avoid powerful skills and save your cooldowns. Shadow Shot, Head Shot and Black Powder are all projectile based skills. Breaking line of sight means they cant gap close with Shadow Shot, they can’t interrupt with head shot and can’t blind with Black Powder. They burn a bit of initiative making them a little easier to go after.
Breaking line of sight also helps a bit with avoiding shortbow skills. More importantly you can more safely heal.
Most maps have objects or terrain variations around points that let you break line of sight.
Learn to weapon swap AND pet swap to keep the damage high. Your window of opportunity for hitting a thief, say while stunned, taunted or feared, is always going to be small. Use the big damage ability on your weapon set, then swap to the other for its burstier ability. Rapid fire, then instantly swap for maul, swoop. Same with pets. Bird F2, pet swap, Canine knock down. Or better yet Bird F2 into Bird F2.
Learn to track stealth as well. There’s a few tricks to this. The most obvious is to follow your auto attack chain. You have a feeling the thief is on x spot, auto attack there and if the auto attack chain continues you found him. Rapid Fire before they stealth. There are some obvious tells for when a thief will stealth usually. Black Powder is an obvious one, as is Shadow Refuge. Start the channel before they stealth and you can watch your character model turn to face the direction of the thief’s location. Just make sure you aren’t holding down your right mouse key. Movement can also disrupt this effect.
Lastly, firing an ability before the target stealths ensures that ability will hit even if the target does stealth. As an example, the thief in this case is trying to escape with a Shadow Refuge. You notice the Shadow Refuge go down and fire off a Point Blank Shot just before the thief disappears. The PBS connects and the thief reappears on the far side of his own Shadow Refuge. Profit.
Ozzy, Ranger has access to a number of different builds and play styles that are effective vs thief. It sounds like you haven’t played either the class or the game long enough to find success with them. That’s ok. Guys like Hiro have thousands more hours doing this than guys like me. Keep trying, you’ll figure it out. Make some thief friends and go spar with them. Or even do what many other players before you have done. Make another character of the class you find most frustrating to fight so as to be more familiar with it’s mechanics.
beastly warden…
well i perservered with ranger and am getting better (having fun!) have managed to fight off some thieves but it still isn’t a fun fight at all…. i actually change my ideas about taunt as well, you kind of need it against anything that is fast (permanent swiftness/ superspeed+ leaps teleports) or has way too many evades/blocks.
even tried thief but ping does not allow >.<
Fighting thiefs is more about predicting the thief then actually focusing all out in killing them, if u can dodge/block important CDs like “steal” and “backstab” then even if in the end the thief runs away from the point thats fine then u still won the fight. Thiefs are great at escaping fights so if they do there isent much u cna do about it and in most casses it shouldnt be ur focus to chase them down.
As a scummy DP Thief main, I pretty much second everything the guys here have said. Thieves HATE Rangers, in fact they’re pretty to close to being just as annoying as Medi Guards (for slightly different reasons ofc). I struggle against any well-played Ranger.
The key thing, especially for DP Thieves, is to make sure you interrupt openings and Black Powder → Heartseeker combo.
Thief is all about getting a good, fast opening, so if you can make it difficult or risky for us to open on you then we’ll either think twice and delay (which gives you a good oppurtunity to get ready with buffs/heals/damage or we’ll eat a ton of damage from LB5, LB2, traps, GS block… etc etc. In fact, LB is just an all-round good weapon to use against us, as are traps.
Putting down AoE on yourself when you see a Thief getting ready to open on you, or they go into stealth, is a good strategy because again it’s discouraging and punishing us for attempting Backstabs, which we heavily rely on for damage.
Also remember that stealth is just as much of a defensive tool as it can be an offensive one, so expect a Thief to try and get into stealth when his health is low. This is where interrupting BP → HS is so good, because it costs a huge amount of initiative and if interrupted whilst we have less than 50% or so is we’re basically dead/retreating. Point Blank Shot is really good for doing this, and you shouldn’t have any problems at all being able to interrupt the combo because it’s easily distinguishable.
If you can’t interrupt it (if PBS is on cd for example..) then start up LB2 instead just before we get stealth because it tracks. Great for keeping up pressure and for knowing where we are.
NEVER stand still whilst we’re in stealth, make it as difficult as possible for us to get your back. If we hit you in the front it’s not nearly as damaging. You’ll also likely see many Thieves throwing down Black Powder at your feet if they notice you standing still, so avoid standing in it if you can.
Abuse the hell out of Taunt because it messes us up, often forcing Reveal and giving you plenty of time to pump in the damage. Also have Sic Em on your bar because any kind of long duration Reveal is basically GG, we can’t do much at all except run away if we have no stealth.
I’d also say using pets like Wolf are good to use because it can knock us out of SR and can interrupt burst if you time it properly.
But yeah, besides that it’s pretty much what fenix said; your main focus should be on learning to predict what we’re going to do and where we are because if you can do that then beating us should be fairly easy, we can’t take much of a beating.
I Silent – Thief
…. That’s about it.
Also you can always use sic em. And possibly traps.
