how do you kill a stealth thief???

At the cost of karma and supply, and it’s 1200 range so all the thief needs to do is shadowstep away out of that 1200 range and wait till you disengage from that trap spot.
Flame trap, flame trap, flame trap. That is how I kill all stealth thieves. As long as the thief is willing to come close to you, keep fire trap ready (as it has the lowest cool down) and put it under your feet. It will trigger as the thief gets close to you, giving you a split second chance to react and avoid the burst and to inflict that sweet fire damage to them. You can vote for viper’s nest too for the poison damage but you will have to live with the 5 extra seconds of cool down somehow. The rest is up to you.

When triggered, the thief gets the Revealed condition for 30 secs. There’s no range involved, i.e. he can’t run away from the Condition that’s applied….it’s like a bad smell, LOL. So, he can’t stealth for 30 seconds. A gc thief (which most are) spec’d for stealth will die long before Revealed wears off. Also, the karma, supply, and badges are relatively cheap. The QQ’ing on the Thief forum pretty much shows how impactful this is in WvW.

Shadow Step and Infiltrator Arrow do not require stealth to get away.

Understood. But we have a really good gap closer (swoop) and if traited, 1500 range on our LB, so getting into range and then using our mad Ranger skills (along with some help from our pet buddy) to take him down is much easier when he’s Revealed. :-)

That brought to mind something Faux dealing with the Crab Toss minigame they added. The Plank’s swooplike move knocks down the enemy. How come ours doesn’t? Do you know how much I would give to be able to knockdown thieves like that?
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
This may or may not have been a fluke. What I did, mainly out of frustration, when defending a camp against several thieves was drop a stealth trap you can now buy in WvW that disables stealth for something like 30 seconds. As soon as one of them popped it, we popped them. I thought it was kinda funny and I like being able to remove that ability from others.
@OP switch to greatsword and swing like crazy.

It works unless its a dagger pistol thief . Then you are boned , he has more sustain then even a bunker ranger
i was getting trolled by a perma stealth thief the other day.
luckily i had one of those new anti stealth traps. just imagining the look of panic and desperation on his face when he triggered it made me almost feel bad about stomping him. (no not really, i stomped him with glee and exuberance)

15 badges to counter the devs incompetence? No thanks, i’ll rather bail the fight and go find some fun encounters instead of wasting my time with a trolling match.

Lots of nice input. Thank you guys.
Puandro and Xsorus, let me ask you: Why do you bother with the Ranger class if you have a thief? Just wondering.

Because its fun. I have 6 80s.
Elementalist for PvP, it was my first 80 and rode the whole “Eles are free kills and D/D sucks” for months until people caught on, it was nice seeing another D/D ele once a blue moon. It is my favorite class. I have almost 800 hours out of my 2,400 hours on him and i stopped doing PvE on him in October.
Made a Guardian right before Fractals so i would have a dedicated dungeon class. Ive never set foot in WvW on him.
Thief was my 3rd 80 and i rolled him for WvW trolling P/D condi before the culling fix.
Warrior was my 4th 80 since i wanted a glass cannon dps for dungeons.
Mesmer is my 5th 80 to complete the dungeon meta trio. Eventually decided to WvW on him and found out mesmers are more silly than i thought in PvP.
I wanted Ranger since the start. Almost rolled one but i decided on Ele at the end. It is my 6th 80.
Ive played all 6 classes in sPvP a good amount with HGH Engi being the most played past 2 months so i guess 7 classes. Necro ive playex a bit to know the basics of the class.
For me ranger is more fun than Thief thats why i play one. Ele is at 100% map completion and Ranger is at 90%+ all 4 other 80s are at 25-35% completion to give you an example. Also i didnt craft on him to hit 80 either. Its a very fun class and i like the pet aspect of it.
I think im rambling now and maybe you are asking why play ranger when thief is a superior pvp class? Other than me liking Ranger more personally i play the thief with a different goal. When i go out on my thief i harras zergs because i know i can get away with it. The risk/reward on a thief is very good. kitten hits the fan and you just get away NP.
Btw IMHO in terms of 1v1 this is my tier list in WvW.
Mesmer
Engi
Ele
Thief
Ranger
Guardian
Necro
Warrior
If i wanted to win every 1v1 i would stick to my mesmer. They are OP atm. I feel bad when i run into a 1v1 because it seems they dont expect 8K-10K phantasm damage.
I pretty sure Xsorus has more than a few alts and returns to the ranger because its fun not because its the best WvW class in his eyes.

A/T and S/D, shaman gear/ammy and BM bunker build. Shouldn’t be too much of a problem tbh.
It’s near impossible to kill them specially when they’re good or they’re really close.. I haven’t had much success against thieves in wvw…. The only thing i try to do is stay as far as I can with my longbow (eagle eye) and if "sic’ em " is timed perfectly my dogs and LB 4 skill + quickening zephyr will get them.
The key point to stealth is:
Stops new damage
Does not stop old damage, i.e. conditions
I put down my spike trap without the ground targeting trait. The small radius makes the thiefs position easier to guess. When he walks into it, he gets bleeding with cripple. Then I shotgun him with either poison vollet (he’s likely to heal within 10 secs) or splitblade. He’s dead if he took the shotgun to the face.
Holy necropost Batman.
Great Necropost, yes, but things have changed since this topic was posted. I’ve had a lot of success with timing Sic ’Em just right.

Wow, I didn’t even notice, let’s just not reply anymore.
If same skill level, ranger has absolutely 0 chance to kill thief no matter what build you are using. In fact a good thief is just immortal in 1v1 against any class. He may not kill you instantly, but there is ABSOLUTELY no way he can die.
You don’t, that is unless they decide to give you a chance. Rapid fire doesn’t work (they still stealth). Sic’em is supposed to work, but alas, it doesn’t as well as they still stealth even despite being targeted with it.
Good thing though, I don’t seem to encounter many of them in WvW anymore; they are a rarity.
Old post is old …but even after the patches the original question still holds true. Most of my builds are built for roaming and 1v1 fights. Against every class I do ok. Win some..lose some. At times I get pummeled because the other player is very good.
The two classes I hate fighting are Thieves and stealth Mesmers. Even when I do win against a Thief I am annoyed. They aren’t an enjoyable fight. Which is why every few weeks I play a troll the Thieves build with my Ranger or Warrior. If there is a group or zerg skirmish I sit back and wait for a Thief to pop on someone. A few arrows from Ranger ..or rifle shots from Warrior. Then time it for Rapid fire or Volley just before thief tries to stealth = dead thief.
Rock, paper scissors. Not on for classes but for builds. If you can’t beat d/p thief then it 1 of tho things. The thief out skilled you or he is rock to your scissors. You could spec condi so that you reverse this and are now his anti class, but then you would have difficulty with other builds that you currently find easier.

Most of the time I just stack AoE conditions on them immediately after they disappear and wait for that red down arrow to reappear from stealth. Thieves don’t have a great time of it lately because they don’t handle condition bunkers well.
Sic’em is pretty good for screwing thieves.

In my experience, only full glass and the ubiquitous D/P don’t handle conditions well. D/D and/or S/D with 30 in Shadow Arts handle conditions better because they’re not using 9 initiative to stealth all the time. This allows them to take a better selection of traits/utilities since they don’t need to focus on init regen nearly as much. Plus, if they aren’t brain-dead, they’ll just CnD off your pet to avoid dodges.
As for beating them:
Depends on your build vs their build. Generally speaking, a well timed Sic ’Em will work if you have something to follow it up with. Daze works well also. Condi overload depends heavily upon build and skill.
If they are X/D, Guard can work as you can stealth your pet away from the fight so its not a free source of CnD stealth. This forces them to come to you, and thus your dodges/evasion.
If D/P, a well timed Sic ‘Em will wreck them because of the necessary 9 init to stealth. Hit them with it shortly after the smoke field goes down and they’re screwed if they hit HS. They’ll be out 9 init, no stealth, and hopefully low on HP.

Not true, Shadow’s Embrace, we shed a condition every time we enter stealth, and shed a condition every 3 seconds in stealth. Unless youre a necro or engi who can burst massive amounts of conditions, I usually wouldn’t recommend killing a thief with condi’s, especailly if the main ones are bleeding and poison
just use stealth soon after they revealed themselves to give them a dose of their own medicine. lol
rapid fire works wonders too… it can track them down if you hit them right before they stealth.

Are you talking about spvp or wvw? Because in spvp, thieves are not contesting points while they are stealthed, meaning that in my opinion it works pretty much as intended. No, you won’t be able to kill them 1v1 unless you get lucky/they are not good, but while they are stealthed you an cap points etc. I don’t really play wvw though, which is probably what you are talking about.
WvW… PVP isn’t what we are talking about here as far as I can see.
What about 2 thieves?
They’re either incredibly good, in which case you’ll explode you, or they’re bad and you’ll kill them.
If one of them is Venom Aura you’re dead.

There are very different pvp in real world and pvp in spvp.
if you play bunk you may have some chance against bad one but no way zerker will beat them in real world pvp.

I have yet to see two people play thief so abysmally bad that they both fail to take down a single target.

Now that you mentioned it, I played against 3 thieves last night! This will likely never again happen, but I had a big smile on my face for the remainder of the night.
Used my trap build with Rabid armor/apthecary trinkets and weapons and 10/30/30/0/0. Saw three thieves, I ran (of course) back to sentry where I had set up a stealth disruptor. All 3 attempted a backstab at same the time, all three got rooted in spike trap, flame trap, and Viper’s nest. In sequence, I used entangle to splitblade. All 3 melted away simultaneously because they couldn’t stealth out. I loved it and /laugh. one invited me to party to call me a hack….I pinged stealth disruptor trap and added " " in chat for him. If only I was Asuran I could’ve been ROFL.
Still got a cheese smile on thinking about it. Of course, these guys were noobs because stealth disruptor has 1200 range. The moment they couldn’t stealth, they should’ve realized something was wrong.

I’ve killed 2 thieves before, but like i said….Incredibly bad..
Like you have to be braindead to die in a 2v1 as a thief.
I use to actually kill multiple thieves more often back in the day with Pain Inverter, The amount of morons who would spam heart seeker while dying to confusion was just sad.

You’re lucky (or not). The thief class does tend to draw players so awful they’re capable of such feats.
These days it’s not thieves that tend to be hard to beat so the people who want to 1v1 decent players and win roll something else. Of course there’s still plenty of thieves out there trying to gank uplevels, but month by month they seem to get worse.
And there are still a few stealth spec thieves that are pretty much unkillable, until they run into a stealth trap. That’s why you carry them.
I run A/H and LB with White wolf and owl (chills). Personally, S/D (even with the nerf in the recent update) and D/P are still the hardest to get specially with a non-trapper build like mine. I do get them with sic em. If it’s timed perfectly. A dog would knock em down then do a burst QZ horn 4 then quick switch to LB 2.. that’ll down them or force them to run away (or retreat temporarily then come right back at you). They def. kill faster than us so if one gets me first i’ll probably die.
S/D rangers and GS rangers probably have more success I havent tried any of those is pvp/wvw. maybe one of them can enlighten us.. our pets needs some buffs in the next updates specially with theiir reaction times. They are too slow and their range is very limited.
If i may: for GS/LB rangers. GS 4 takes care of the first stealth. immediateley use hilt bash maul combo. If he steaths again, dodge, then swoop away to put some distance between you. switch to LB and try to bust him down when he appears. If he stealth’s again and all skills are on cd, sig of stone can be used as a last resort (if you have the trait). Most thiefs run refuge so when you see it BARRAGE! He will heal, interupt it with longbow 4 and he’ s in trouble!
