Q:

I have been just leveling my Ranger but now I have started going into WVW at level 31 to run with the guild hardly any of us are level 80 or even close yet

Question is what pet and skills should I use for WVw to most help out my guild

I mainly use long bow with Axe/ warhorn when I am leveling

I put my first point into marksmanship is that ok

I will speak from a level 80 perspective.

Rangers aren’t very supportive in zergs. However;
Having 3 rangers in an organized zerg can do a lot to the enemy zerg.
These 3 rangers can use;
LB with piercing arrows to knockback up to 15 people in the enemy zerg, before the zergs clash.
Wolves can fear up to 15 enemies, Drakehounds can immobilise just as many
Entangle can pin down 15 enemies.
Muddy terrains can also pin down 15.

“But elementalists have static field and guardians have the wall”, you might say. Well, elementalists has 1 thing, guardians have 1 thing and rangers have 5 different things.

And always use warhorn 5 to support with swiftness & fury

Edit:
Playing in WvW with a low level character is okay, but don’t do it if the whole zerg is low level because 1 single half-skilled level 80 guy can take on 2-5 upscaled people.

In zergs rangers can be pain as gankers. Get a group of 5 of them, target enemy commander and just pewpew. You can be sure he is raging on their TS.
That is, with LB.

If you run LB I wouldn’t advise 2nd ranged weapon. Sword or GS give you ability to survive in AoE or against melee thanks to blocks and evades. Not to mention mobility they provide.

pets use a Drake hound+soimoth
(for plasma extra protection+stability+feathers for blind defence and repostion) very handy to avoid pesky theifs that type to lock onto you thinking your a easy kill) , muddy terrain )

pets generally dont last long because of the ball of aoe so these type of pets are usefull or if you already have a lot of cc in your build, like Extended cripples / predators instinct (triggers a fresh load of cripple if your barrage drops them below 75%)

and entangle , if you plan on firing from mid- to back of your org it will prevent sneak attacks from light classes.

though doing this means you will need Sotw and sotf to run a good CC power build.

lb/s+d or gs both can be useful i would not use full zerks that will get you killed before you can react since you can’t react to everything in WvW its too unpredictable.
go with a mix of Zerk/valk/cav/ or assasins *take atleast 35% crit hits and let the rest be from spotter or bonus wvw points and fury will push you up to 62ish% and that’ll be enough. aim for min 2.7-2.8k armour too cav armour covers this and a cav longbow will help you against those suprise stealth attacks and some Aoe fields if you can’t swap to sword to get away or repostion .

most thiefs target lb users expecting them to be very squishy and will try to focus you down before regroup/recovery so that extra toughness lasts you long enough till you can grab items or use skills to recover, even though your not going through so many aoes as melee types it is always a good idea to have some toughness and hp(valk) to survive those sneak attacks or you’ll become dead weight.
