should i still play a ranger?
For leveling, just spread between Marksmanship, Skirmishing, and Beastmastery (at least 10) for common power crit build. Theres no hard rule in the order, just put in points as you see fit. Respeccing is cheap too, so feel free to experiment.
If what you are looking for is a similar hunter class to the WoW one then yes, you probably should reroll because it’s not anything like it, but you won’t find anything like that in GW2 anyways.
That being said, ranger is a great class in GW2, you just have to enjoy it as it is and not try to make it just the typical “archer” who kills fast and dies even faster.

The ranger class is fine as is, apart from some minor things that might need/get some fixes.
I’ve played nearly every class now and i must say that the ranger has been one of the easiest to lvl. The pet can do the tanking in most cases and you’ll only have to shoot the target. Just learn to make use of the skillset you have and there is nothing to worry about.
I’ve seen many people complain about the ranger damage but i find that nonsense.
My build is a glass cannon (longbow) wich brings a high risk (PvE or PvP) but the damage is unparalleled.
And aside from that all, people should stop comparing this game to WoW or any other MMO because there is no other MMO similar to this one.
Probably the biggest flaw with rangers right now are pets. They’re supposed to deal 45% of our damage but they die really quickly and have trouble hitting moving targets. Their skills usually don’t activate reliably and some of them don’t even work half the time.
If you really want to play ranger, pick your pets carefully. Get at least 1 pet that has good defense of CC. Something that doesn’t need as much management.
I keep a wolf with me as a secondary pet so that when my raven dies my wolf can fear or knock down the enemy, and if i get downed i can use my wolf to delay stomps.
i think we need to change the pets deal 45% of damage to something like 25% of our damage. that would make more ranger players happier.
as far as pets go, running duel canines provides the best crowd control, high defense and some tanking abilities. also howls don’t require a target to be used.
As far as PVE goes the only truly serious problem is that pets don’t work. They don’t keep up with moving targets and end up attacking the air instead. This is a problem because like the WoW version of the Ranger/Hunter type, we are a pet class here in GW2 (not all games do Ranger that way) and so a fair chunk of our damage is supposed to come from pets.
That means you can ignore the post up there ^^ that says you can “just let the pet tank”, because that stops being true once you’re leveled up and actually doing real damage. At 80 with all exotic gear my pet couldn’t hold aggro if I glued it to him.
On the other hand, if PVE is your primary concern then you can also forget most of what goes on in this forum. Pet issues aside, PVE isn’t really where we hurt. In fact I feel pretty good in WvW as well, but that might be because I don’t play Ranger like a melee warrior with medium armor.
Truthfully, most of the complaints center around Ranger performance in spvp.
So yes there are issues, but no the class isn’t useless. Most importantly, if you enjoy it then nothing else really matters. I’ve taken Ranger, Warrior, Guardian, Elementalist, and Thief up to 80 and the Ranger is still my favorite.
