Hi all,
i’ve played a few months ago something like a hundred games with the ranger to know the class.
I must say that i liked playing ranger despite his problems, I was using a beastmaster bunker build (0-0-30-10-30) but reading the forums it looks like now only spirit rangers are considered viable, is that true?
I just want to know if i’m wasting my time testing other builds, i left the game for some time and i don’t know what changes underwent this class.

well i jsut can say.
i have also testet rly much spvp builds for ranger.

at least spirit ranger is for sure the most strong viable build in pvp
if you dont like to play this kind of ranger, then the second viable build is beastmaster ranger, but its a ego build and have not much for the team.
the spirit ranger give burning and protection to the team, is also not bad in survive and makes more dmg.

last viable build is the trapper ranger, but its atm rly to weak

dps ranger 20/20/30/0/0
but thats just for fun

Spirit Ranger is our only viable build for TPvP. You can get away with other builds in Solo Que.

Spirit Ranger in Team Que is only good as a Team Support builds, you can run the more tank Shaman’s build and try to hold backpoint or be Solo on a point on rotations, but Engineers and Warriors will out shine you in 1v1.

So if anything don’t let yourself get stuck holding mid while your guardian rotate’s to backpoint to team fight cause soon as there backpoint rotates to mid good chance its a Engineer or Warrior and they will decap you and kill you. Only way your going to stand a chance is if you let them have the point and play the ranged game slowly working them down.

i’ve been thinking on a spirit ranger build but i don’t know the class very well so i have a few questions:
1) is the “passive” effect of spirit triggered by normal attacks or only special skills?
2) water spirit as a healing skill is worth it?

The passive of the spirits is triggered by normal attacks. (I’m not sure what “special” skills are?) All of them except the Frost Spirit have a cool down of a few seconds where no attacks will trigger the passive. The Frost Spirit has no cool down at all.

Most people don’t like Water Spirit.

I’m not a huge fan of Storm Spirit. I would maybe take Lightning Reflexes, Signet of Renewal, or Stone Spirit. I assume this build is for a small roaming group? A bird is a potential replacement for getting some more swiftness out there, and birds are decent pets. Maybe owl/wolf. And on that note, for a small group I think warhorn will be more useful than dagger.

I wouldn’t take Water Spirit. Healing Spring is a better heal and a better team utility all around, as it cleanses, grants regen, and is a water field.

3 Spirits is fine, but do note that if it is for WvW, the open range style of combat does not favor Storm Spirit which is only used for it’s active, so you would be better off taking Signet of Renewal in that spot (more passive cleanse, and an active stunbreak/full cleanse).

Note that Storm Spirit is more situation, but not useless.

No, you are not wasting your time trying other builds. There are a number of builds that people have discovered and use on a regular basis with great success. I would say about 60% of Spirit Rangers I see in tPvP are the typical S/D – SB Spirit Ranger that stand on a point and use SB auto…they don’t move/dodge. Just stand there. Spirit Ranger is easy mode, kind of like MM necros. Now, the other 40% of Spirit Rangers have skill and dodge properly, know how to alternate there skills and are that much better.

I would suggest starting with might stacking traits on the Ranger along with boon duration increased runes. It is possible to have a steady 13-17 stacks of constant might with the Ranger, I would suggest starting there for your testing.

Also, when you start playing people who are on the top 25 leaderboard, you will see a few Rangers that don’t use the typical Spirit build.

I will test again my spirit build in tpvp this week, I have only played a few matches but i quite like the gameplay though I preferred the beastmaster bunker build I was using a few months ago (i don’t remember spirit rangers being so popular back then).
