I equate rangers with bows and arrows. I wouldn’t be opposed to allowing us to use rifles but I personally wouldn’t use them.

Ranger does not mean ranged fighter.

They’re a little like various real-life ranger professions, everything from park rangers to army rangers, and a lot like the DnD Ranger class and Aragorn from Lord of the Rings (which is the basis for rangers in pretty much all fantasy).

Essentially they’re a nature based profession – they reply on their own wits and resources and the environment around them to provide what they need to survive, through building traps, summoning spirits and taming wild animals to fight with them.

Rifles don’t really fit with that. Before anyone says it I’m well aware modern army rangers and even some park rangers use rifles. But in GW2 guns are still new technology, and they’re only really used by those who are interested in new gagets.

Also because they wanted to limit how many weapons each profession can use as part of giving them some variety.

They’re also neither like the Texas Rangers, New York Rangers nor Glasgow Rangers in this GW2.

Then why can a Warrior, who equivalently in your lore would be dumb and brutish, use a rifle which is some new and strange technology?

Your logic is flawed.

Where does it say that warriors are dumb and brutish? Also, how much intelligence does it take to pull a trigger?

I mean in your stereotypical idealistic fantasy world where rangers are naturalists and all that (your explanation of the ranger). In that world, warriors are also bloodthirsty, brutish, dumb, barbaric. Not that it requires intelligence to fire a gun, but you said, “But in GW2 guns are still new technology, and they’re only really used by those who are interested in new gagets.” Words out of your own mouth, so to speak. Warriors are suddenly interested in new gadgets? Uhh… no. Engineers, yeah of course. Warriors? Dumb, brutish, warriors, interested in a new technological gadget?

As I said, your logic is flawed. Warriors should be no more interested in rifles than rangers. Only reason I can see that Warriors got rifles is they needed more ranged options — or more classes that used rifles so it wouldn’t be JUST Engineers.

Not really sure where the “dumb and brutish” keep coming from in regards to Warriors, since lack of interest in firearms doesn’t necessarily mean individuals in said profession are dumb and/or brutish, especially in the magical/technological melting pot of the GW2 universe. Warriors might just be content or have to deal with using whatever they are issued by their military order, or because they personally find firearms effective/useful regardless of how gadgety they are (especially if their enemies are using them).

Whatever the case, though, this appears very much to be an arbitrary gameplay mechanic limitation that doesn’t seem to have an explicit explanation in lore. I mean, ignoring rifles for a moment, some of the other weapons and/or weapon combinations some professions have access to while others don’t are themselves odd. Rangers with greatswords? Casters dual-wielding swords (while Rangers can’t)? Casters with greatswords (even if they’re not being used as swords)? And by no means am I opposed to any of this, since GW1 allowed any profession to use anything with viability limited to the creativity/skill of the player. However, since the professions in GW2 are limited to specific weapons, why exactly these limitations?

After all, as far as we can tell, all characters regardless of profession demonstrate the ability, if not proficiency to use (for instance) firearms or firearm-like devices when completing some Renown Heart objectives (my favorite being the sniper rifles), and the Ranger profession itself has access to spear guns, which are, well, guns. And if you include the novels into this subject, the characters in those didn’t necessarily limit themselves to only what their GW2 professions allowed.

So yeah, unless otherwise stated by Anet, I’m going for arbitrary.
