Trap Ranger was great pre 6/23/2015. Post 6/23/2015 it doesn’t work anymore. You have a handful of players who want to try and make it work but it just doesn’t. The only viable Ranger spec now is Power LB/GS when it is played as Peeler +1’er.

I use the name Barbie on all of my characters.

It is one of the best ways to kill bunkers, nobody expects that it can dish out so much sustained damage.

I tried it last weekend and did have some fun killing bunkers in a few sec with burn.
It’s kind of like a berserker build but then with burn.
You place the burn trap and field and do some combo’s and hope your enemies die.
If they don’t well you try to dodge and evade untill you can do it again.

This is WRONG. Horribly wrong (no offense).
It’s all in how you play it.
All I run now is traps and I have great success.
Trap ranger is all about your pets and weapon choices, and the pre fight setup.
I rarely loose a 1v1.
If I loose a 1v1 it’s usually because I guessed wrong on their build. Some classes have to be “trapped” differently.
For example: You play thieves and warriors totally differently than you play engis, rangers and mesmers. Thieves you trap heavily pre-fight and stand in them. This is SO important that if you’re NOT standing on your traps and get that bonfire down, you will die fast vs experienced thieves. (healing spring is a trap too btw )
Eles (diamondskin) are the opposite. Dont waste your traps at beginning of fight against diamondskin eles. You will loose if you do. LB and sword 1 are your friend
Know the meta or the player and you can win with traps and have a lot of fun.
I have no stun breakers and very little condi clear but I know when to use RAO vs entangle or cc pets vs damage pets.
In group fights your traps will melt people standing on the point. Just dont stand in their stuff. Spike traps prevents invis stomps. Poison trap is underated If you get focused, use LB 3 and 4

The key to running a great trap build is having a lot of condi dmg and haveing a way to manipulate the enemy into your traps. Tip: longbow makes them come to you… unless they got a better longbow In that case you take the traps to them. Trapper ranger is NOT about plopping traps down and hoping they walk on them!!!

Again, this is hands down my favorite and most successful build on any character.

Someone always has to be a troll. But hey, might as well make the day exciting.

What we do know is that it is a specific play style that you either like or don’t. It works for some, me for example, and others not so much. Works with double melee weapons, long bow, and short bow. Works in zergs, works solo, and works on HAVOC. This is my opinion and only for WvW.

It has changed since the 23rd patch but they are not broke by any means. In fact I’m one of the few who say they are a bit on the OP side of things (my opinion) and work better post patch. I like that you set them now rather than lob.

And dancing in the ruins has never been as much fun. They excel on some maps with regards to area of play.

Main – Laaz Rocket – Guardian (Ehmry Bay)
Johnny Johnny – Ranger (Ehmry Bay)
Hárvey Wallbanger – Alt Warrior (Ehmry Bay)

Traps are Awesome in ranked on SkyHammer.
You can control Skyhammer, easy and kill almost anyone there.
Just have to take EleteShout if there is engineer with Elite elixir or Tornado ele against you.

they’re not using them “defensively” like traps are meant to, IE putting them somewhere to punish someone for going there. once people trip the first batch (which are normally put in the same location every single time so after the person dies tot hem the first time they just dodge roll or AI into them next time), and then they run up and start trying to drop them on you, which just wont work.

This right here is what traps are all about. When I play a trap build I’m trying to keep the traps between myself and my opponent. The cripple on activation helps with this. If the trap is between you and whoever you are fighting they have to walk through it to get to you. Plus you have the added benefit of throwing your projectile finishers through the field now, stacking more burning or poison.

There is not enough utility with them to take up your utility slots for something that must be played defensively and have no stunbreaks, boons, teleport, condi removal etc.

There’s no way they’re going to make our traps into a kit, however they should make frost trap a stunbreak or something just to make the thing not so kittening useless.

That and most trap rangers tend to take a 2 utility traps + a stun break or take RaO to mitigate the lack of stunbreaks, but even then just going balls to the wall with 3 traps works quite well.
