I’m having fun learning ranger. Right now, I’m using a build like this (without all the ascended gear)

Anything seem really wrong with the build?

Second, I’m trying to get used to a rotation that feels good. There are likely lots of changes in the heat of the battle, but this feels like a nice starting sequence.

Start with axe/torch/drakehound

Use F2 early – nice to immobilize and land the rest of the attacks
Throw torch (4)
Winters bite (3)
Splitblade (2)

Swap weapon (short bow)

Fire trap

Swap pet (wolf)

Use F2 (assume that the fear cast time takes a bit of time – I’m still testing this)

Poison volley (2)
Cripple shot (4)
Sit in auto-attack (while opponent runs)
Concussion shot (5)
Quick shot (4)
Use the ice trap (there should be nothing here that breaks the stealth)

This burns a lot of pet skills early, but it leaves entangle, bonfire and spike trap for a burst coming out of stealth.

Is this a reasonable approach for a rotation?

Since you mentioned about ascended gear, I assume you are making a build for wvw roaming am I correct?

Healing Spring is great when you use it with a group or if you have a sword main hand to leap in for the extra health, but if I’m on myself most of the time I will be using Troll Unguent because it heals yourself for alot more if you are playing shortbow with axe/torch.

Something you might consider using would be to change axe for a sword for the mobility. Just think of the situations where you are being chased by a group of people with axe/torch and shortbow. Not alot you can do to get away. Sword helps alot with that.

In my opinion if you want to run traps you should always have a least one stun breaker. You could either take Lightning Reflexes or Signet of Renewal. Renewal might be a good option depending if you got enough condi clear or not. Lightning Reflexes can save your butt from so many situations.

Keep in mind that traps aren’t very good for Tpvp at the moment, but you can make something solid around it for WvW roaming or just casual pvp.

I would consider swapping drakehound for spider so that you get some more poison uptime, which will help against wars, guards and eles.

Spider still has 2 immobs as well, they’re just not aoe like the hound.

Yes drakehound may hit harder, but Spider also hits more frequently because it’s a ranged DPS pet. In the end it’s up to you what you want. Against zerker/celestial classes you can also time your poison field from spider to use a leap finisher weapon skill vs them to apply weakness which helps alot.

I run drakehound but I have more poison than he does. Doom sigil and shortbow is not much at all.

I’m new to trap builds as well (started playing them about a month ago) but hear is my view.

It never occurred to me to use Dire stats for it especially with trapper runes plays a big part of you survive ability. why not use Rabid? I’m even considering making a sinister set for traping.

I agree with using sword/torch over axe/torch if for no other reasons then leaps.

for a stun beaker you could swap spike trap for LR and swap hide in plan sight for WS skills recharge.

For rotations i have always found that the ranger is not suited of big skill rotations such as an ele of necro. there a some two or three skill combos that chain nicely. but i have always played as use what skill best suits the situation, (some times its a case for this skill is off cool down so i better use it ‘throw torch’)

I’ve been playing a trap build on and off for about a month or so with Rabid, A/D + SB, Hyena/Wolf. Only Exotics, but I do alright. The 3rd utility changes based on the situation, as do the Adept and Master traits in WS.

Similarly to Eggy I’ve found that the ranger isn’t really suited to trying to land combo chains like some other professions.

Thanks very much for all the feedback! I should have been clear, but this is just for WvW.

This is the first profession that I’ve really tried besides mesmer. I spent basically two years doing a mesmer phantasm build in WvW, so I have to unlearn a lot of things.

For me, the question on Rabid versus Dire is, why am I trying to crit? The sharpened edges trait is nice but the duration is short. Does it produce that much damage? I think of high vitality as part of condition defense strategy, so that’s why I like Dire. But I might be really missing something.

I originally was using the jungle spider and drake hound. I might go back to it again. Alternatively, I’ve considered putting another doom sigil on the bow.

As a mesmer player, I love mobility in combat. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to Blink somewhere… I was hoping that super speed was actually… super… Does anyone have any insight on whether this will actually ever be faster than it is?

On the rotations, you’re right that it doesn’t often turn out exactly like that. I’m mostly trying to get a sense of parts of a rotation that have synergy. Like, does it actually work to use the wolf Fear with short bow to get the auto-attack bleeds or is it usually worthwhile to put down the flame trap before swapping to short bow to proc the burning on the projectile finishers. I’d be thrilled to get little sequences that people find really helpful

Well going with a Rabid build you’re just taking a more aggressive stance. It opens you up to be able to use Sharpened Edges and Sigils of Earth. I also use use dual Geomancy in mine, which has a certain amount of synergy with Axe #2 and Bow #2 since you get the most mileage out of them at point blank range. Dropping the vitality does leave you more susceptible to conditions, but it’s really up to you on how you want/need to build.

I used to go Rabid with Sharpened Edges + Earth sigils and it is obviously more offensive, but IMO opinion you invest a lot of stat points for just a few more bleeds.

Dire is far tankier and you can still get 10+ bleed stacks with SB/Axe/Dagger.

Traps automatically mean that you are taking a very offensive build anyway, so you have to rely on your gear to keep you alive.
