No, not in the least. You obviously spent too much time playing WoW.

Rangers are not the same as hunters (really a hunter can be any class, a ranger is something more specific). More importantly, they are not a “ranged class”, they are a “nature-themed class”. Designing classes around conceptual theme is vastly superior to designing them around gameplay mechanics, which is one of the many reasons GW2 has a much better class design paradigm than WoW does. WoW’s hunter should have been more like GW2’s ranger, not the other way around.

In any case, for an example of a greatsword-using Ranger, I point you in the direction of the most well-known Ranger – Aragorn.

If you didn’t play WoW, then I can’t think of why you’d want a rifle. Our bows essentially do everything rifles do for the other classes. Plus it clashes with the class’s theme of nature over technology.

I think WoW is the only place I’ve seen a ranger with a gun. It’s an easy mistake to make. I assume almost everyone has played at least a day of WoW even if they try to say they haven’t.

Since you have never played WoW, then you need to know that the ranged, tree-hugging, pet class in WoW is a Hunter, and that Hunters in WoW can use guns. Furthermore, you need to understand that every game on the market is flooded with suggestions from current or ex-WoW players trying to make that game more like their WoW experience.

Finally, this game never identifes Rangers as “hunters” and since the term, Ranger, is not remotely synonymous with “hunter,” being morely close tied to a territorial guard, warden, or commando, the odds are fairly good that anyone making the suggestion you made came from WoW. This is especially true since most sword and sorcery style games do not include guns where WoW does and since WoW lets Hunters use guns.

Therefore, the assumption may have been wrong, but you need to understand that it was a natural mistake.

We are not hunters, we are rangers. Rangers are forest warriors and nature guardians, they work and fight to maintain the balance in the forests and valleys, they do not go around killing animals to put their heads on the wall.

Unlike the hunter, the ranger is silent, swift, caring, compassionate and elegant, he plays a benevolent role to help lost travelers, heal wounded animals and fight back all which seeks to corrupt the forests. The hunter kills for fun and trophies, cares for nothing but the thrill and rush of the hunt, and has no respect for natural life.

Rifles completely contradict ranger lore, and hunters are the opposite of “tree-hugging”, since their unnatural role and purpose in the wilds, is destructive and unbenevolent.

If you want to be a hunter, then play a rifle warrior.. which by the way offers far more damage and power than a ranger has to offer, it is pure destruction and burst damage.

If you want to be a hunter and wield a gun, build a char ranger, and take the charzooka. Otherwise… no gun for you!

Shoot a gun once, and you may get a kill, but you sure as heck scare of any wildlife in the wide area. Realy the silence of a bow is the way to go if you truely want to be a mighty hunter and bring home the most game…

Other explination (lore wise), the ranger has shunned technology over the last 250y in favor of nature based ‘magics’ and their relation with their pets. I’m guessing like game, they don’t like these loud noises…

I’ve been hunting in RL before, weapon of choice high poundage re-curve bow. You just have to make the kill in 1 shot or you can lose your game. Side arm: pig sticker. Some of my friends take a hand gun as well as their compound bow when hunting boar, but only to shoot it in worst case “you hurt me, I’m going to kill you mode”.

the only reason I wouldn’t mind a rifle is the horrible lack of flashy-factor on the bows.
I don’t think its right, when utility spells of the Elementalist and Guardian can create bows as side bonuses that have better designed visuals than the actual equipped bows of the character whose class description begins with the words “these bad boys’ signature weapons are bows”. I think Rangers lack so badly in the visual design department, that at this point even a rifle doesn’t sound that bad.
