- Adjust axe / axe or GS to a higher DPS set: since sword roots in place this would keep the unique play style of the sword while providing a moving high DPS melee weapon

- Pet should ONLY come out under express command from player input: my reasoning for this has to do with the next change I will propose, but also the fact that it is annoying when your pet comes out and attacks a target just because you got hit

- Ranger pet stats should be a subset substracted from the player stats: this would make it so that if I decide to keep my pet stowed those stats would transfer back to me and enhance all my attributes, this would make it possible to run w/o a pet and NOT suffer from poor performance because you do not have a pet out

Agree with you fully, I don’t see ranger as the pet class. Permanent pet makes no sense in this game, not even for necro…
I wish they did this change, I dream of it. Don’t think it will ever happen before it’s too late.

Non-pet rangers are never, ever going to happen, so I’ll skip that.

As for the weapons, GS having the same damage as 1H doesnt make sense. GS autoattacks are AoE, while 1H sword has a single target autoattack in the chain. You have to also factor in the evade on the GS, which is worth a LOT more than a cripple. The autoattack is the only thing used for DPS calculations, so we can ignore all the other skills.

Increasing axe damage would be weird, since it’s both ranged AND AoE OR double up on a single target. If you’re using an axe autoattack on a single target in melee range you’re not in the optimum weapon set.

Adjusting the axe or GS would harm the uniqueness of the weapon sets. I also don’t think they would address any of the common complaints about rangers, unless you boosted the damage of all their weapons. And that could easily lead to rangers being OP. (Not that I would necessarily be against a flat damage boost, mind you.)

Well the ranger axe is a bit light on dps in comparative terms. I would like to see it’s auto attack increased a bit.

Agree GS and Sword can’t have the same damage.

At the very least, I think we should have our trait bonuses improve our pets. One of the biggest troubles is that 1/3rd of your damage is from the pet but you have very few ways of boosting that up like you do with your toon.

Our stats should somehow scale pet stats. Our condition/precision etc etc should improve the pet. Not necessarily 1:1.

- I see your points about the weapons make sense, so in that case they would need to add a weapon type for rangers that is both melee and doesn’t root. or do the simple thing which they don’t wish to do, which is remove the root from 1H sword

- you’re missing the point on non pet rangers though, it’s not about making a complete non pet ranger, it’s about having the choice and not suffering for it. Right now you need to have a pet out even if having one is detrimental to what you’re doing, fractals & dungeons come to mind. having the pet stats transfer back to the player when the pet is stowed gives a ton of options to play with.

I personally like the sword, specially combined with a dagger the dagger has yet 1 more extra evade on it that also follows the target, the acrobatics are also great. problem is, it’s great for general PVE but it kinda sucks in dungeons where positioning is very very important :S

Why comment before doing your research? Firstly, GS hits 3 targets maximum while AoE in this game hits 5. Secondly 1h sword auto attack is NOT single target but hits 2 nearby enemies. Please fix your post.

I assume we all already know AoE melee weapons on all classes hit 3 targets. And I’m pretty sure kick only hits 1 target? If it hits two that will be awkward since I have probably 20k kills with a 1H sword. Take it easy on the vitriol.

Edit: Wiki also says 1 target.

- as a Warrior main, I love melee.
- melee has several advantages to it, going melee isn’t the same as the stack here problem.
- melee damage is far higher than range damage.
- all 5 going melee ensures all 5 benefit from all boons and condition removal.
- I love fighting my enemy up close, making them eat my GS / Hammer to the face.
I even say it out loud a lot, here eat it ! eat it ! oishi daro?

The GS isn’t worse. It hits 22% more targets per autoattack chain than the 1h sword does, plus it evades once every 1.75 seconds. The 1h sword hits less, provides cripple to 1 target and 1 stack of might to your pet.

I view those are comparable. If you disagree, feel free to state why. Just don’t get confused that we’re arguing here because you misunderstood how many targets I thought things hit.

hmm, what is this talk about melee AOE ?
melee weapons have cleave
- And yes, I know it hits 3 targets, but there is a clear distinction between cleave and AOE please don’t intertwine them !

- Since kick is not done with a weapon it hits 1 target, your foot doesn’t qualify for cleave :P

On that note, I was making a joke about the foot not qualifying for cleave and found this

Greatsword totally needs a damage boost. We’re the only class in the game with a “defensive” greatsword, which is kittened. Compare it to the Warrior, Guardian, and Mesmer versions and then laugh at our inferiority (dps wise).

Also of note, Longbow #2 needs to become a burst skill.

I agree, melee is all I play on all 8 classes (I even managed to get my engi in to a point blank range, but shes basically a failure and I don’t care to remake her.) But stacking without moving is called for in a lot of the old dungeons, and that’s really kitten (edit: difficult on, lol) the evasive classes like rangers, mesmers, thieves, etc.

The devs have been making a pretty big effort to keep people from stacking in dungeons, and I think it makes for a lot cooler gameplay! Look at the dungeon bosses in the living story dungeons vs. the crap dungeon bosses in the old dungeons. Mai Trin or the Molten duo vs. the ghost king.

I love the molten duo one of my favorite bosses all time.
and molten duo clearly let’s you see the difference between stack here and don’t move (AC spider) VS go full melee on the Molten Beserker, than kill the Dredge Robot. (molten Duo)

Melee is highly over rated. You cant just stack anywhere not to mention when badly hit in a boss fight you have to constantly back off wich result in a loss of dps. The one true adventage of ranged weapon is its ability to keep dealing damage even at a distance from the boss. I see a lot of realy cute 2h sword guardians who switch to staff or 2h sword warriors who switch to rifle the moment they get hit… what do you think is their dps then? Id also like to point out that despîte the fact that the ranger damage with longbow hardly break the 10k critial chain it still is about the same damage as a great sword guardian not to mention the pet itself in the recipies. When arena net is done fixing the ‘’stack on boss’’ problem its likely ranged weapon will get a serious revalorisation so dont keep your shortbow/axe/longbow to far.

Oh, if they did these two things it would be Heaven in Tyria. Granted, they need to hotkey passive/aggressive. Why that isn’t hotkey’d is beyond me. Seems like a severe lack of polish not to have that option. You know what is great is when I play my other toons and the class mechanic works and not AI controlled… and on that thought train… I don’t understand why if Thieves can have two (yes they have two between steal and initative) class mechanics why can’t we? I mean, steal on the thief isn’t even broken like ours is as eluded to by Jon Peters. Why can’t we have pets and preparations? No reason. Make it PVE available only so they don’t have to worry about balancing the 2nd class mechanic in PVP.

IMO they haven’t fixed the pets because of technical limitations of the AI code and processing requirements. I don’t think it is possible for them to fix the pets unless they mustered all their resources which simply is not going to happen.

I also don’t understand why people get bvtthurt at the mention of making pets optional… it’s like they take this kitten personal or something equally stupid. Why? Why don’t you want the option to have a class mechanic that works properly? Why do you want everyone to suffer with you? Why must you be so selfish as to want us all to use the same band aided pet that you want to use? I don’t understand this thought process that thinks having a not fully functional class mechanic is acceptable.

They do well in solo PvE, thinking that pets are great, then come to the forums stating that “pets are fine, and those who don’t think so need to learn to play”, “You need to master pet management”, “But ranger is the pet class”

I’ve quoted John Peters and his statement about the pet AI in the 10th dec patch thread multiple times to people, yet some people still refuse to acknowledge pets are broken.

I still run pet in pve fractals lvl 30+ and im most satisfyed. Never noticed any problem related to my pet AI as you guys mention them save for the fact they sometime are slow at using their F2 skill. They strike when i ask they to, run back when i ask them to and attack wichever target i direct them to. This is the base of a pet AI wich is used in just all MMO. go compare this AI with the one in world of warcraft, perfect world, diablo 3? or just any game wich includes some pets and youl notice those things NEVER try to dodge. Pets act like all npc do, they run for their target and attack. You cant expect them to just… sidestep out of red circle just because theres one, npc just dont have this inteligence.

Aside from the fact pets cant dodge aoe attack because of ’’AI’’ problem they prety much seem like working fine to me. In beta pets sometime had bugs related to attacking wich made them simply stand still even then you could just have them attack your target by using F1 or triggering their defend/passive ability.
