which pet is most responsive?
Birds seem to land their attacks more frequently than the rest in my experience. Although it could just be my imagination, it seems like they stick to their targets better than say, the felines for example. Birds are very, very squishy so you really have to monitor that health bar if you want them to keep doing damage. Their F2 abilities seem to go off almost immediately in most cases and the fact that they start off fights by giving you swiftness is a nice bonus.
Personally I still prefer drakes over anything. They don’t land many attacks but that tail swipe does heavy damage if it connects, they’re the only pets with cleave, they’re the perfect balance of DPS and tank, I dunno, drakes are the way to go IMO. I tend to rotate my secondary pet depending on the situation but my first pet has been a Salamander Drake for quite some time. It’s F2 only has any real use versus NPC’s but still as I’ve said, it’s a very reliable pet.
I recommend birds if you want consistent damage but high maintenance and drakes if you want moderate damage and low maintenance. Spiders are good damage dealers, generally avoid taking damage since they’re ranged and can take a hit if they get hit since they have a good deal of health. The poison and immobilize are just icing on the cake. Felines are of course our top DPS pets but they share the same health and toughness pool as birds so keeping them alive can sometimes be a chore. If you want heavy pet damage I suggest birds, felines or spiders – spiders if you have trouble keeping squishy pets alive and birds if you want your pet to pressure your opponents. Felines are good for spike DPS since they tend to land some pretty nasty crits when they’re attacks connect. Canines are great for CC and utility but as you’ve mentioned their F2’s take a while to go off which can be a problem. Regardless they’re very good pets for their knockdowns and cripples. And lastly, porcines are also extremely good. Despite being low damage dealers their F2 “forage” skill is amazing if you get good at positioning yourself to pick up the items. The knockback is an added bonus which is always great when it ends up interrupting someone’s heal.
tldr; Birds for consistent damage but high maintenance. Felines for spike damage but high maintenance. Spiders for soft CC (immobilize), debuff (poison), moderate damage and moderate maintenance. Canines for hard CC (knockdown) and soft CC (cripple), moderate damage and moderate maintenance. Drakes for moderate damage and low maintenance. Porcines for hard CC (knockdown) great F2 utility if placed right, low damage and low maintenance.

birds and spiders are the pets you are looking for.
I use owl and wolf atm. You shouldn’t be sending dogs away from you to use their f2. I only swap to a dog when the opponent is in melee-600ish range.
Spiders are the most trustworthy. I’ve not seen them fail like other pets do.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
Spiders since they apply a venom onto their next hit. And they’re ranged so they don’t spend their remaining life span walking around a ledge to bite the enemy for 200.
break. I feel like they should be back by now..”
Birds are the most responsive while they’re not too busy swirling around giving swiftness for like three seconds that can’t be interrupted.

If you are relying on pet in order to win 1v1 you are doing it wrong. If you are full BM, and the pet is still doing nothing, you are doing it wrong again.
PS: Agility Training. The amount of rangers slotting it is too kitten low. (And I prefer to keep it that way cause eezy killz!)
I love my war pig of doom!!!
Yes I run Pig, and warthog, and occasionally Siamoth. Love their f2 forage skill.
It’s the chain I beat you with until you

holy kitten you really are the most cancerous person on these forums. Every post by you is just negative assumptions. I never said I was relying on my pet in order to win, try reading properly next time. All I’m saying is if you actually watch your pet try to attack a mobile enemy, they don’t land a single hit. I’ll say it again, get off the forums.
If a trait is basically required for the pet to function sounds like something that needs to be made baseline and the balance team need to work on an addition trait for the player base to ignore.
It is all good and well pets don’t hit all the time , it would be like a perm source of damage , classes will have to have base Regen just to counter it.
though yes agree , Spider and Birds hit more since the attacks are more direct no long wind ups, fast activating attacks.
but with range Spiders still the same and suffer from Flight time > distance to target.
though currently im using a Soimoth+Drake/Snow leapord., drop the plasma pick it up swap pets > eat plasma , shared boons (gives pet a speedboost+lots of defence for a good duration)
swiftness on weapon swap or warhorn 5 or even signet of the hunt , my pets ether on 33% speed or 25% speed .
not much need for Agility training unless you don’;t have a lot of swiftness sources or any at all, i’d only use this if you don’t have 3 in naturemagic.
It help’s your pet to connect if you use one of the various different ways ranger has to apply cripple to a target… we’ve also got a few different chills and immobilizes at our disposal. If you can’t make your pet run faster make the enemy run slower ^^
Not to mention the various forms of giving your pet swiftness via skills and traits and weapons. Lots have mentioned the obvious with Agility Training or Signet of the Hunt but there are waaay more options out there like Intimidation Training ( f2 skills apply cripple), or Predator’s Instinct ( Cripple foes below the threshold). I find it easier to hit slower things than trying to get my pet to be fast enough to catch fast things.
QZ +Sic’em when used in unison can really overwhelm unsuspecting targets no matter what pets you choose to play with (okay maybe not crawlers…those thing are more like turrets than animals imo).
Some pets really shine in certain builds where others flop so it’s important to really pick over what you’re traiting to synergize with your pets.
