Best to watch in extended view not fullscreen as the video doesn’t support 1920×1080.

Watch a Ranger in tpvp

I talk about…
*PuG vs Meta
*Comparable Games
*mods

Things to Watch for…
*Signet of Renewal isn’t very dependable (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R4iaVjMOTQ&t=12m35s)
*Ranger vs Pistol/Dagger Thief build (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R4iaVjMOTQ&t=6m0s)
*CnD can’t be blocked (watch the 1v1 vs the pistol Thief and see how I am blocking with GS and the Thief gets his ability to trigger anyway. What other skill works like this? Does Hilt Bash activate even though someone blocked it? I don’t know, but it seems a bit odd.)
*Shadow Refuge is out of place and spammed way to often to save teammates with no skill or dedicated healing/runes required. It should be a dedicated Healing Skill imo, not a utility.)
*Nasty root/glitch under stair cases.
*AOE/Knockbacks are a bit too strongk.

Role: Trying to play as an evasive healing support character. Defending/Attack back points.

I’ve been running one iteration or another of an evasion tank since beta; it’s wicked fun once you get used to spiking with your pet and a lot of people don’t expect it. Biggest problem is vs super tanky eles and thieves with excessive stealth spam. Some mesmers cause trouble but not as much as the aforementioned two.

Right on! It definitely is fun to pull people into your team or just starting fights and flying away. However, I don’t really find myself worrying about the Eles or Thieves too much being a tanky healing evasive ranger. Mostly the knock backs and massive aoe mark spam can shut me down instantly especially when signet of renewal doesn’t work all the time. I find it odd that I have no problem with the Signet of Stamina with my Warrior and yet it’s basically the same thing. ‘Press this button to cure conditions’. But, the fact that it’s tied to your pet and it can actually work against you depending on how you look at it if your traited for beastmaster signets or w/e. Also, many people expect me to switch to a LB/SB and start firing arrows. You can actually see one of the Thieves in the video side strafing to take advantage of the dreaded ‘Obstructed’. Even though I wasn’t shooting arrows at him >__>. Just another reason to go full melee I guess.

I more meant I have trouble with those professions/specs in the sense that they just don’t die; I’m more sustained damage with very little crit with my spec; the lack of AoE means I can’t reliably spike stealth spam thieves down and the lack of crit means a cleric amulet ele is going to heal through my damage if he’s decent. I sometimes swap to eagle/hawk for more sustained damage than dogs, but I always end up missing the CC dogs provide. I haven’t died 1v1 in a very, very long time; worst case scenario now is a stalemate.

Ah, yup I see what you’re saying. Pets can be tricky for sure. I tend to let them go in and die first then fly in for a stun or possibly save someone. Rarely do I try and 1v1 people, but it just happens in every tpvp match, so I just build for survivability and hope to keep the point neutralized till the team gets there. Or hit their back point if it’s open. In the mean time I try and get Medic every game and just revive. Devoted my runes to Mercy and Shaman Amulet.

I gave the gs a try just cos i thought the block would have been cool vs cnd. It IS odd actually, but w/e.

SR is one of the strongest skills in game. Love how thieves could get like 12 stacks of might while staying in sr. It’s actually way stronger than most elite skills.

Anyway while i don’t like your build much, really nice video.

I run Valk amulet; I can’t stand not being able to do weapon damage. S/D and GS don’t have much in the way of conditions so I got as much power as I could out of a 30 BM build for myself. I have around 2150, which is respectable even though my crit rate is really low.

I’ll watch the video later, when I have time. But I have a quick question: Are rangers viable in tpvp? I just recently started playing spvp in random servers, and I’m trying not to sound like I have a big ego here, but I’ve been doing very well. I get #1 or #2 fairly often using a BM build. But I have a feeling that in tpvp I just might not be able to compete against more skilled players who know how to effectively use their profession. Could anyone shed some light on this, and briefly explain to me rangers general role in tpvp?

I hear ya. My last build was pure glass cannon with GS/SD siamoth/panther, so I’m not alien to some fun damage builds. After that I ran a very balanced spec with celestial even though there’s so many better options than balanced, but I have fun and that’s what matters to me. In the video, my sentiments toward the build are clearly expressed, for in tpvp I try to get as many revives and support my team by serving as a distraction. Everyone wants to burst down the ranger, so if they choose to focus me it might bite them in the kitten because my team usually catches on. This build has 3000+ toughness and takes reduced damage while reviving…that’s pretty big for how evasive it is and I don’t mind sacrificing all my damage because the raven has a very nice burst up to 5k every 18 seconds.

It depends on the role you want to play. I think there are far better options for burst and bunker, so I try and play as a healing/annoying/support/roaming/kitten. You can neutralize points and fly away if things get too hot, provide a lot of condition removal with the massive aoe healing spring, and a well timed aoe fear can help get people off the point temporarily. I don’t know the much about the meta ranger, and I don’t care to use it. However, I am interested in learning about it as you mentioned.

decent build, i used to roll with SB/S/D/power (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_EoFNCZ0Rg trolling around few weeks after launch pre-QZ nerf). but you can do way more damage (condition) and have a similar level of survivability with SB/axe/dagger/cats, stacking bleeds like a champ. bunker beastmaster builds synergize so much better with the wilderness trait line for the +cond damage and extra defense through toughness and empathic bond. also makes d/d eles cake. unlike other bunkers, rangers can do some serious damage with conditions and pet…wouldnt wanna waste that. comes down to preference i guess. i like my ranger to sting, rather than just dodge around all day.

regarding Forge, i can see the appeal, but GW2’s combat system is way better, not to mention the AAA quality and customization available for your character. you go on a rant about spvp giving only aesthetic rewards, but imo it’s a great system, something that Forge wont have to the same extent, if EVER.

i totally feel you though, but im quite optimistic GW2 will be a more serious pvp game once the update rolls around in early 2013. right now, im still figuring out new builds and having fun.

regarding moderation: fully agreed, not sure what theyre trying to achieve here. ive been suspended multiple times for writing docile, semi-constructive or very constructive posts.

Funny you mentioned that. I was hoping it was going to be brought up because I land more ranged attacks with the Pathfinder than with the Longbow XD. Nobody can side strafe your shots and I’ve seen people try, but get mowed down. There’s no ugly downed state and no self healing besides the shaman. Contrary to your opinion, I believe Forge is surpassing GW2 in the PvP department. It has a good blend of games packed into it: Halo (Godly Y-Axis movement), TF2 (fps skillshots), overall very fast movement speed, and GW2 mmo mechanics.

you go on a rant about spvp giving only aesthetic rewards, but imo it’s a great system, something that Forge wont have to the same extent, if EVER.

I know it is very appealing to mmo players and hat collectors. If you think the aesthetic rewards kinda all look like kitten, then what’s the point? Yes, the graphics are good and yes the game is beautiful. But, if all the gear looks the same or can’t been seen at all (Asura) what’s the point? Not to mention you can’t use all the available gear in the game because we are piece of kitten spvp players who don’t deserve it.

i totally feel you though, but im quite optimistic GW2 will be a more serious pvp game once the update rolls around in early 2013. right now, im still figuring out new builds and having fun.

I’m playing other games, but patiently waiting for the Mists to evolve just like I’ve been waiting for DayZ to evolve into a standalone.
