[youtube]Thief vs. Ranger Duel
This fight reminds me a documentary I saw, where the male lion with all the tools in the world to defeat his prey, got kitteny on this young exhausted, bleeding to death buffalo (of which died eventually), the lion proceeded to go for the neck only realising too late that the buffalo had enough strength left in himself to lunge and plunge his horns into the Lion skewering him and later leaving the lion to die of his wounds.
Not to say this isn’t an impressive video, only that this thief had all the tools in the world “sustainability, stealth, and far superior burst” to demolish you, yet you being on the defencive that whole fight, you took advantage at the opportunity and you won.
I’ve had similar fights to this, but I’ve lost more than I have won, I live and roam alone. The way that thief fought is frustrating beyond all hell, and to me you won with a slither of health.
This makes me want to duell people to practice those situations.
Glad ANet finally gave us this possibility in the 13/3/7 patch!
Update 5.9.2013: getting better ANet, still way to go!

this prove that dueling is more exiting than this bad conquest-bunker-roamer thing that we are playing for 3 months now..

Thank you for such a constructive response and that’s a remarkably good comparison. I don’t normally use spirits, so my usual signet of beastmaster and protect me would have affected the way I played. How could the Thief have done better in that situation? I’m just curious, so I know what to look for. I believe he backstabbed me twice in the beginning and I know that’s enough to drop most classes with little toughness.

There are several things thieves can do, but from what I saw, that thief was ‘clean’. The other night I had one that started with a 5k backstab, so I dodged away, then he used heartseeker (believe that’s the name of their leap attack) on me like 4 times in a row, and heartseeker does some good damage, that’s all he needed to do to take me down. Even with my longbow pushback wasn’t enough to keep him away from me from using that heartseeker. Plus they run faster then us so it’s not like I could run away a bit to gain some distance. To me, my fight was dirty, but what do you expect from a thief?

While I don’t like bashing the tpvp meta and conquest, because it is pretty well designed and allows for easy to learn hard to master gameplay. However, all this talk about 1v1s being unfair and not interesting being regurgitated by a lot of people kinda makes me want to not live on this planet anymore. I mean, it’s obvious that this is a rare outcome because there are often outside influences. For example, it’s easy for a Thief to quickly burst someone in a team fight, stealth, and recharge safely. But, Rangers don’t have such easy access to stealth, so if they are focused by a few people they can be burst down kinda easy depending on the build. 1v1 is different, though. I mean look at it this way. That Thief as a Dolyak, and so was I. So, two players with even amount of experience were able to duke it out for a few minutes and put on a good show. Why not setup a 1v1 Arena with scoring based on a “down system”? The player who downs the other most out of 4 rounds..wins. Rounds are on a 2-3 minute timer, and the player that downs the other the most receives glory/rank/qp.. the loser receives squat. There’s no room for laid back bunker builds, because only balanced and burst specs should be able to down someone under 2-3 minutes…I think. Also, players can see each others stats before the first round.

Like what? It’s not like he was packing Thieves Guild or anything. He used Basilisks on me…twice! Backstabbed me twice, and landed enough heartseekers when I was low on hp to ruin just about anyone. He used Shadow Refuge, and Hide in Shadows(x2). He also had the upper hand given that my back was turned a lot,my jaguar was afk for the start of the fight, and I don’t use spirits a lot.
I’m also curious why downvote me?(not you in particular akisame) Was it the editing, slowed down gameplay, medium quality, or because it wasn’t another video complaining about obstructed and “ranger up”?
I didn’t downvote you, I actually liked the video, I thought it was a good fight to see. I’m just saying it wasn’t like some thieves out there which are one trick ponies. The question was asked, like what else could the thief have done. Me being a glass cannon build gave you an answer as to that question with a previous experience of mine with a thief.

It can be.
But bad conquest can be more exciting than deuling.
If the ranger didn’t get a lucky pet knockdown during the end of the theif’s spike he would have been dead within the first 5s of the fight.
Melee thieves are typically easy 1v1s though, at least if you make it threw their spike, the ones you really have to worry about are thieves that are good with shortbow and shadowstep… the guy in the vid was terrible with them. He could have easily out ranged dmg’d the ranger and forced the ranger to use sword to kite into melee, which is when the thief pops back into d/d and eats his face off.

He wasted the 2nd one by using it with shortbow… and to boot he didn’t even try to salvage any use out of it by throwing in a free cluster bomb after…
It was an entertaining deul, the thief had the advantage by leaps and bounds, just couldn’t play it out.

Ah, yeah I was asking in general, not you specifically. And, he was using a typical backstab build, but missed a lot of heartseekers because of all the evades. I also had 30 in defense, so that’s why backstab didn’t instagib me. Bark Skin helps negate all the bonus damage from heartseeker and assassin signet. But, yeah. I was sorta asking what could he have done better in that fight to down me, not what can thieves do if that makes sense.

Actually, I think I got a total of 3 lucky knockdowns. I’m not sure what you mean by luck since the hyena lands knockdowns like nobody’s business and they automatically use knockdown when you swap in combat. How was he terrible w/bow? He landed shadowstep, and clusterbomb, but missed crippling shot. That’s not terrible. And when he thought about kiting me I knocked him down right quick. If anything I would of just waltzed right back into base and fixed my utilities instead of chasing him with sword like a kittening idiot.

I was screaming at my computer “ACTIVATE THE SPIRITS!!” while you were just standing there ontop of them (poorly placed btw, out in the open, right next to each other, tsk tsk) you could’ve chilled and blinded him, he even missed with the first backstab and hit your spirit as you could see by the frost spirits health sky rocketing downward while nothing was around…
If you’re gonna use spirits you need to practice with them, it’s apparent you don’t know what you’re doing with them, and i’m really surprised you managed to win that fight lol he was wrecking you…
PS: What gear do you use? It’s clearly not my high toughness gear, that much damage from a thief is alien to me.

They don’t knockdown right after being swapped out, it’s a chance at it, at least from what I’ve noticed.
Especially when you swap with an enemy right next to you.
He never bothered to kite with shortbow, he used it for a few spammables (and basilisk venom!!!) when he couldn’t catch you, keeping a close distance instead of kiting, then swapped back as soon as the weapon swap CD was up. Good thieves use shortbow then spike when they can finish you with the backstab combo. That or if they just go balls to the wall and spike off the bat, they immediately kite out of it with shortbow and pew away instead of chasing a sword ranger with d/d out and blowing shadowstep for nothing but a spammable attack or 2….
Shortbow can evade like its nobodies business, that with a little sidestepping would mean you would never land a hit on him with your bow and he would be doing 750-2k to you a hit (depending if your pet is next to you).
Its a MEAN weapon in the right hands, one rangers have little answer for besides a lucky pet CC/imob/chill/cripple or using sword’s hornets sting and Lightning reflexes with your back to them to roll towards him.

From my experiences, the Hyenas are the go to dogs for knockdowns. For instance, I can use Guard like it’s a knockdown ability, and I think the Hyenas have a higher chance of using their knockdowns because they have very poor auto attacks. Ok, that makes more sense now that you explained it. I guess I don’t see too many people side strafing hot-joins. Yeah, the pet def screws us over when it comes to that nonsense.

Yeah, I think the fact that I was down under 1k hp about 3 times made it a very dramatic fight. Gear? kitten if I know. This was a while ago, mind you. Also, you might want to have your eyes checked because he certainly didn’t miss that first backstab. The Frost spirit was already damaged from a fight earlier, and I wasn’t even looking at my screen when he jumped me. I’m surprised he couldn’t kill me…I was afk for like 5 seconds.

uncontrollable knockdowns, having an aoe fear that you can time is a dozen times better :P
(aka wolf)
The thing about guard though is interesting and it makes sense, it gets the pet to back off so he then uses his leap to get back in melee range.
It was a good fight though, just calling what happened like I saw it though.
I dueled in this game ALLOT mind you (I’m rank 39) so I saw exactly how brutal thieves could be with shortbow many, many times.

Eh, wolf shmulf. I don’t even use pets for anything other than plasma, skulls, and feathers. Pure dps greatsword Ranger and I love it. I don’t care if it got nerfed. Evade + Troll Unguent and stability is wtf worthy. Top it off with save me and signet stone.

Ah, after rewatching it you’re right, i thought i saw the spirits health drop before he engaged (thinking it was him hitting the spirit). Thieves are pretty much just all damage though, they have piss poor health and armor and after they use their stealths (survivability CDs) they drop like rocks.

Hyenas absolutely launch their KD as soon as it’s off CD, no doubts about that!! I’m pretty sure all the wolves do however, because whenever i swap my pets over my wolf will use his KD asap (unless the enemy isn’t using an ability at the time then he doesn’t)

I’ve noticed, without a doubt, a fair number of times that I pet swap in a canine (while I was downed) and the canine doesn’t go for a knockdown, mainly if he spawns already in or close to melee range of the target.

Yeah, that’s happened to me a lot. Only in downed state. Sometimes even with quickness on pet swap the wolf fear won’t even effect people in the aoe. Might be a rare bug or something. But, never when I’m ‘up’ do I have a problem with my pets knocking down melee classes.
