Ok, let me preface this by stating that I know that the Revenant isn’t even released yet and that all numbers/skills/mechanics etc. are subject to change. But in my napkin-math theorycrafting, I can’t currently see any compelling reason to not take the Herald elite specialisation.

Even if you were to completely ignore shield and Glint, you still get 40-50% uptime on AoE Fury, Might, Regen and Swiftness and ~25% on Protection via One with Nature. This completely overshadows whatever perks your tertiary specialisation would otherwise provide, especially given that the other Herald traits are quite general-purpose and can be useful in many different roles.

What am I missing here? Is anyone planning a Revenant build that doesn’t use Herald?

why waste hours doing something that you get nothing for? Enjoyment? I’d rather run fractals.

All of the other trait lines are pretty strong. Personally, from a PvP perspective I find the Herald traits to be the weakest by far, the shield to be okay, the dragon stance to be somewhat mediocre, and it’s heal to be easily countered. On the other hand, the F2 is really nice.

I’m already having a tough time choosing between stability on dodge, resistance on mallyx skills, the damage from devestation, and 100% crit chance with fury.

Overall, I don’t think I’m going to use it. And, if I do, I won’t be using dragon stance.

We will find out next beta. But that extra stab 6sec stab on a dodge and aoe reveal..hmm..will be hard to give up +due to swiftness you dont have to run traveler anymore.

As for the heal, if you get 5k off it (2k initial..) you can count it as success as thats basically the same amount as Jalis one. If its insta which work also under cc it wont be a problem i believe.

That stab trait is pretty strong. With energy sigils that’s a whole lot of not getting CC’d. Leaves some pretty tough choices trait wise.

I’m afraid of buffs to salvation to make it more viable outside of heal-botting. Would make the decision way too hard.

I would say that for me this trait is a reason why i want to go for heral in the first place. I found rest to be quite lackluster tbh. Too much focus on support. It all depends how Jalis will play out now. Boons are fine and all..but i dont like to rely too much on them.

Apart from AA, it has some support aspect. And a Poison.

I imagine Sword MH could be taken for the long evade, though. There are options.

The other traitlines are good, in particular the damage-based ones.

In fact, if it weren’t for the fact of getting an additional Legend, I wouldn’t be taking at all in favor of having a combo of the cores.

Well since revenant was designed as a new class, theres no doubt that herald will feel like another core spec espesially when it fix many of revenant issues. I personally hope they tone down this spec/bring up core to herald otherwise it may be problematic for future elite specs to top this one. After all if it end up too good to not have we will always look in the future specs as “meh, herald is better” unless they make them really op.

The f2 active on it own is already strong as f..pair that with high uptime pulsing fury, protection on demand etc.. atm Glint seems to be tankier than Jalis while offering also great support. Outside of condi builds i dont know how you can not take herald in it current form.

I could ask the same question for Chronomancer however.
Elite specs are ELITE, meaning they’re usually better then normal specs.

Things will change when we get 2 elite specs for each class and you’ll have to choose.

And yeah, Glint+Shield is basically useless in pvp (not Herald however).

Glint useless in pvp? Kitten button which has potential to heal back to full on 30cd along with aoe short cd reveal and high protection and fury offensive builds/tanky builds? Thats definitely useless in pvp..O.o

The olny thing useless here is shield due to how bad skill 5 is.

Shield is currently a pve weapon for sure.

That defiance bar is bad in pvp where people have a brain, but it’s pretty good in pve. It’s basically a 4k heal with no incoming damage and conditions (except the one from previous condis) and 4s stability. There aren’t many bosses that use a lot CC in a row currently.

I have mixed feelings for it in wvw. More bads then goods.

Shield4 is basically Guardian’s with no damage, more healing and way less protection. It’s nice only because we also get Might via trait from it, plus a lot of healing that is always good (just pop it right on you if needed).

Well, considering what Glint and Shield do, I don’t see the use for bunkering. Now, I’m not saying they’re bad, but the bunker role is a poor example here.

Honestly, Revs who want to bunker will likely just stay Revenants by the look of things.

To put it simply: It’s missing condition cleansing and stability.

I can see many dying many times in Crystal Hibernation to a couple burn stacks and poison or to a thief ambushing you with basilisk venom and sleight of hand. Those are just 1v1 scenarios too, in a team fight a herald looks like it would be food for a coordinated team.

This is incorrect. They are “elite” in the sense that they change how the class is played/make it do something different. They are not designed to be better than core specs at all. This was stated by the devs when they started talking about them.

Perhaps because it’s more of a 3 core specs = 2 core specs + Herald?

Why does one or the other have to be greater? It would appear to me that it would depend on what you want to do with the Revy.

You’re right, I should have asked if they’re equal because that’s what they should be. Herald just feels a bit mandatory right now, in that 3 core specs offers less than 2 core specs + Herald.

It’s just that I can’t think of any situations where a third core specialisation would benefit a particular build more than simply taking Herald. That’s why I started this thread: so people could share such situations or builds with me, to help put that feeling to rest. Unfortunately, nobody seems to have any specific examples so far.

Shield, if you plan on using skill 5, is going to be really difficult to bunker a point with. The enemy can decap around you. It would have to be used very sparingly, as in only when you have allies with you. As it is now, good bunker guards generally don’t risk using RF; most don’t have to, and Feel My Wrath is far better for a quick Empower heal.

If you can maintain a duo on a point, though, then yes shield 5 would be very useful.

Ironically, from a PvE perspective, Herald will be the third line as it’s the least bad of all the bad ones besides Devastation/Invocation.

Salvation has too much healing power centric garbage that is useless on a berserker/sinister build, retribution is about taunts and retaliation(terrible boon for pve) and tanking, which you don’t want to do on berserker.

So it’ll probably be herald, which is still bad and too “supportish” in a bad way (it doesn’t really boost your group’s offense much and its defensive features cost you energy to upkeep which means less ability to do damage).
