For leveling and doing hot condi build?
What profession? Warrior?
Personally I’d go for the swords, I’m pretty sure you get a lot more damage with them if u use the devastation tree. But if u need a ranged weapon, hammer is obviously the way to go, you trade off the extra damage for survivability.

I was thinking for ranged because of torment if you move the enemies you do way more damage.
So you’re talking Revenant? Cuz it looks like both Warrior and Rev suggestions are being made. Why didn’t you post to the profession forum?

I clearly edited long before your post here that I meant to put it in rev.

I see ur point. You’d do more aoe Condi damage that way, especially with a torment sigil added. Swords are more single target.

Ahhh glad you agree I am testing it out now but I am not at hot yet, I will have to wait and see how well it does.
I would recommend a sword, particularly if you are not using Jalis. You need something to destroy condition-immune targets that are associated with reknown hearts and events.
Sword/Axe is still the way to go for a Rev, with S/Sh or Staff as secondary set.
I use M/A and Sw/Sw or Staff for condi open world things… You don’t really need a ranged weapon as most of your dps and torment stacking is going to come from being close to your enemies…
If you absolutely have to range, you can still mid range attack with mace 2/3, axe 5, sword 2/3, and Banish Enchantment spam.
But yeah, sword is super handy for kiting, and isn’t completely a power weapon now that chill applies torment, so at least that’s something.
Only time I ever switch to hammer is for the Wurm bosses in Draconis Mons and Ember Bay, because those are afk while auto attacking from ranged encounters. Or I guess in WvW when people are up on the keep walls during a siege.

I must of missed the part where sword causes chill nice. I forgot about the range but don’t you have to get hit?
What is hammer good for anyways?

Honestly, nothing really… I guess WvW zerg play. Maybe might stacking via double blast finishers. “Safe” play during World Boss trains, etc…
