Thoughts on using Hammer in WvW

in Revenant

I played Revenant in a ranged/support role in WvW. Here are a few thought on how it played, specifically with the Hammer equipped.

First, my Revenant WvW build:
Jalis/Ventari;
Retribution, Invocation, Salvation;
Full Ascended Sentinel Armor with Traveler Runes and WvW Infusions;
Ascended Sentinel Hammer w/ +5 Damage, +10 power stacks, WvW Infusions;
Ascended Soldiers Back w/ WvW Infusions;
Ascended Cleric Rings, Accessories, Amulet w/ WvW Infusions.

General Thoughts:

Hammer is not a DPS type weapon. It is not a weapon for solo play. It is a ranged, group support weapon and needs to be played as such. No amount of Zerker gear or anything else is going to change that. If you use it for the role it was designed for, you will not be disappointed.

The obvious advantages to running a this build is 1200 Range AoE Chill and AoE Knockback. Cooldowns are short, drop them on the front line and when the Tag calls out to “Bomb Here”. Also, ANet gave the Hammer three 1200 range, short cooldown finishers for a reason, they want you to use them a lot. In fights, your job is going to be Chills, Knockbacks, Blast Finishers, and collecting bags. If you properly support the frontliners, you will get lots of bags.

Issues:

Hammer 1 is meant to be used as a projectile finisher for optimal results. That being said, I do concede a little boost to damage may be in order even though this weapon isn’t intended to have high direct damage attacks. Anyways, not showstopper issue.

Hammer 2 hits thru gates. I used it to take out siege and unsuspecting players inside towers. I’m not sure if ANet intended this to be a 1200 Range Line AoE that ignores LOS thru gates. This probably needs to be fixed. The damage dealt is perfect. Finally, consider making this AoE another combo field.

Hammer 4 is a Reflect but it is also a Dark Field. Using Hammer 1, you will combo Life Stealing. Unfortunately, you cannot blast your own dark field to cause AoE Blindness since the field moves with the Revenant. However, your teammates can blast it for the AoE blindness. Hopefully this is not intended and ANet will fix it so Revenants can blast their own dark fields.

Hammer 5: Maybe slightly speed up the cast time. Not a huge issue.

Overall, I had a great time on this build. I rarely died, got a ton of bags, and felt like I was able significantly contribute to some very successful fights.
