So im wondering, how are thief’s overall. like how are they in wvw, pvp and dungeons. And with wvw I know that thief’s roam, but how about when they are with a zerg?

Thief is probably the most notable class there is in GW2 where a class’ potential is solely based on the player’s skill. You can’t really say “thief’s overall” because a really good thief can beat anyone/anything, while an average/bad thief can’t really benefit anyone in PvE, PvP, or WvW. Unlike Eles and Warriors, this class takes a lot of practice to become proficient in. And when I say a lot of practice, I’m talking 250hrs+ to become semi-decent, and that’s if the player is naturally good. So there isn’t really a good answer for your question.

Thief is good at everything and not hard to learn.

While the thief “can” fit all the roles due to the game’s design… some roles are better handled by other classes.

Plus, with what SimpleKingly as said, " this class takes a lot of practice to become proficient in.", so if you enjoy putting in a lot of effort into achieving X, then sure. Just know other classes might achieve X with a lot less effort.

Since every class can fulfill any role (a role being something useful), the question becomes how much struggle can you endure to fulfill that role.

I think this is kind of misleading. While it’s true that thief, like any class, can fill any role, in reality thieves in PvE are most considered for their DPS output. Sure stealth helps in runs but if a thief is in the group it’s likely because of DPS, every time. That being said, to get the most out of thief you’ll want to run with DPS gear and the learning curve can be difficult depending on what you’re used to playing.

Pretty much what the others have said. Thief has high single target DPS in PvE and some unique things it can bring to dungeon runs like group stealthing past mobs. It really depends on what you want to do. For pugging stuff, I usually bring my ele because of the might and fury stacks as well as the support if the group has to carry someone. If the group is already good on might/fury, I bring my thief.

In PvP, they’re pretty good for decapping and assisting teammates by spiking down someone who’s focused on your teammates. Due to the burst not being 100-0 in nothing in PvP, the thief plays as more of a finisher by sitting off to the side, then spiking the player your teammates call. It’s not that you can’t take anyone down with enough practice with the thief in PvP, but if they survive the initial burst, the fight usually drags on and your time would be better spent elsewhere.

Depending on the size of the zerg, thieves “can” help, but their function is limited to picking off stragglers. They don’t have the armor/stability /protection to run through the center usually. The smaller the encounter, the more effective the thief will be.

Most of dungeon groups ask for thief if the path is easier with stealth skips. What others think about thief dps best describes what happened to me recently in AC – me (thief), ele, 3 warrs (1 × 15k AP + 2 x noobs that looked like in blues/greens). The 15k AP warr got all kitteny at me for picking ice bow, apparently either him or one of the other warrs should use it cos of “superior dps”. I come across this attitude quite a lot in dungeons with pugs. I am not talking about people who usually pre made their groups and know all about pve, I am talking about average players.

Thief is top dps in dungeons but only with fully buffed party, without those buffs, thief dps isn’t that amazing.

So im wondering, how are thief’s overall. like how are they in wvw, pvp and dungeons. And with wvw I know that thief’s roam, but how about when they are with a zerg?

PVP – thieves are alright there but they are expected to roam/cap and turn 1 vs 1 into 2 vs 1.

PVE – they are fine here too. Thieves are generally expected to know their class and the relevant pve content perfectly. If you try dungeons with thief and have low AP, you are more likely to be kicked on join since thieves die rather fast and people prefer classes that won’t take dirt naps all the time.

WvW – this is where thief shines (in roaming) due to stealth and high mobility. Good in team fights, rather weaker in zergs since we are squishy and random aoe can kill us fast. Thieves usually pick other squishies in the backline or camp a bow.

i’m new and i’m curious about thief because almost everyone seem to have a problem with it, right now i’m level 10, i have dagger in my main hand and pistol in off hand, i challenged myself with a wolf boss in human area.
i kept failing until i used shadow shot (button 3) all the time.

then looking at head shot (4), it’s useless. why it’s there, if we have (3)?
that’s not right!

the other skills are okay.

but to me right now it looks like using the right skill at right moment… is how this profession works…
1v1 button 3 seems good.

so, thief = situational adjustments is success
is this so? still what is that head shot there for? the way it functions seems to be only useful in maybe pvp for someone ranged attacker, that aside, why?

Headshot is to interrupt your opponent. Not so important in PvE (except for the Risen Subjugator) but in wvw and pvp. So, imagine you are against another D/P thief and want to use your #3 skill, he uses headshot and you can’t use #3 and have wasted initative on it.

@Pockethole,

Adding to what Jana said, which is all correct, you’ll find eventually when you do WvW or PvP Headshot is actually one of your most valuable of D/P skills when used correctly. It can interrupt heals, rezzes, stealths, and a whole other range of abilities that will give you the upper hand. In PvE though, it serves little purpose. But I am not PvE expert, so don’t take my full word on that part.
