Am I doing something wrong?
The jungle wurm is scaled to give a difficult time to even level 80 players, so it’s natural for it to pretty much obliterate you. your build right now doesn’t matter tbh.
Once you are 80 you should start thinking about how best to build, until then just use whatever is easiest at the moment.

Playing thief is all about execution. They can’t take many hits like other classes but in return they have a lot of high damage potential and lots of ways to avoid damage using teleports, evasions, stealth, etc.
lvl 35 is a little early to critique a build but if your computer specs prevent you from timing dodges correctly then I would invest in some toughness and healing power. My best advice for you is to keep doing what you’re doing and learn when to evade attacks from each boss encounter. Bosses hit hard but you have plenty of ways to evade their devastating attacks. Bosses like the Jungle Wurm might be a different story with a large zerg attacking it because there’s too much crap happening to the boss to see it. Plus those world bosses are boringly easy so just use a ranged weapon.
See if you like running pistol/dagger. Stack power and condition damage gear, use caltrops too. It’s pretty safe… you cloak and dagger, move away a bit, sneak attack for 5 bleed stacks, then auto attack twice, then cloak and dagger again to repeat the process. You’re either at range or stealthed the whole time so you don’t get hit often. Get 30 points into shadow arts as soon as you can to get shadow rejuv…. that helps a lot with surviving.
Once you get the rhythm down you’ll be unkillable in pve. With more practice you can go to direct damage builds and being fully geared at lvl 80 helps a lot too.

For a world boss like the jungle wurm
- start at max range 900m and see if it is safe (yes it is for this one)
- watch the animations and learn a few pointers for the big attacks
- move into melee and plan your evades/dodges for when the pointers happen
- if you haven’t learned the animations then heal up in a safe place
It isn’t very exciting to kill world bosses with shortbow auto attacks but you can do that for many of them, unfortunately.
I have full celestial ascended armor on lv80thief with 30 in Shadow Arts and the Wurm may still down me in one shot if I get hit multiple times with a spin.
So it has nothing to do with you. World bosses usually tend to be only for lv80s for the rare/exotic drops.

Yeah I’m still a little annoyed how Arenanet manages to kitten off new players with their unfair-hard-difficult fights in way-too-low-level areas.
Just like explo modes in dungeons: You’d be a fool or a heavy-armor class to take them on at the level they are displayed.
Thanks to all your contributions. I have now change my playstyl and build a little and having more success. Currently using a s/p build

You should have seen the champ flame shaman day 1 in the charr starter area. Things used to be turned up about 10 notches and some preffered it that way.
OP hang in there gotta get used to the game, low level thief is pretty squishy

Any lvl thief is completally and absolutelly squishy with no defensive cooldowns and stealth aint gonna help u in boss fight. Use ranged weapon on world bosses.

Pretty much ^^
If there’s peeps around to rez you and complain about it then there’s too much effects and lag going on to dodge properly.
Use the shortbow, clusterbomb on the effects, do not detonate – the blast finisher helps keep boons up.
You really shouldn’t melee the wurm unless you’re level 80.
