Mark the real mesmer before you engage if possible, it’ll make it much easier to pick your targets. Most of winning a fight with a mesmer is in reading their actions and being able to pick the correct target. They’re one of the only professions that can come close to thief mobility so expect them to try and run/kite if they’re in a difficult position. If you’re running a glass cannon, confusion will make you hate your life. Signet of Malice and having some AE capability helps a lot with keeping you topped up while you down clones.Their downed skill is trivial to combat once you understand that the real mesmer always appears after the clone. Down the mesmer, attempt finisher, fail because they stealth, wait for second mesmer to appear, finish.

That is, of course, assuming they both appear within your line of sight. The mesmer teleport can go around corners or over hills or sometimes even through walls. The one that shows up where you downed them will usually be a clone, but the real one can be somewhere you can’t even get to easily if you’re real unlucky.

well from a mesmer standpoint aoes tend to weed out my clones since for the most part they tend to bunch up if the mesmer activated the clones close together but an easy way to see a mesmer besides the icon on the target health bar on top which will have a butterfly mask on the real mesmer because sometimes its hard to shuffle through the clones and the real mesmer when the fight gets alil chaotic is to look for the only mesmer thats running around and doing more then the default 1 auto attack since clones dont really do damage you can let them be unless theyre charging you in which case youll want to dodge or kill them so the shatter effect misses some people will target the phantasms because they can do damage or other effects depending on the phantasm my recommendation for thieves is to use your short bow poison the area and bombard the area with cluster bombs if your chasing the real mesmer and close to them cluster bombs can do some real damage to the mesmer i recommend using cluster bombs when your close to the mesmer because the arc of the cluster bomb can be time consuming..also your number 1 attack on the shortbow bounces between i think 3 maybe 4 enemys so you can take out some clones if they are close together too.

Edit: when mesmers are in a downed state since they can create a clone and teleport to another location the only way i can think of killing them on the ground is to nver stomp because you might be stomping a clone which is time consuming and the real mesmer may beable to heal themselves in time also always twist your camera angle around so you can see if there is another downed mesmer if there is hes your guy/girl to kill if you cant see another mesmer lying around and you killed a clone most likely he teleported behind somthing so you can either try looking for him/her run off and look for somthing else to do or wait around to see if the mesmer is willing to go round 2

It does have a fairly large maximum range. While using it, my mesmer has teleported far enough that ranged attacks can’t hit from my original location. The distance and location are random, however, so you don’t know where you’re going to end up any more than the enemy does.

My main is a mesmer.

How to beat a mesmer? Dont run a cookie cutter burst build. Thats it. For example if I get attacked by one of those cookie cutter backstab thieves I just hit one of my blocks a second after he stealthed. It completly screws his build he has no chance to use his burst combo. The mesmer profession basicaly hard counters one trick burst specs of any class.

So what should you do? Run something with some defense and that is not build around using one skill or combo.

sword + pistol
showdow step in mesmer diraction, dodge X2 pistol whip combo, when he shawdowstep away, u chase him with skill 2 with a kill.

shawdowestep back with utility if necessery. gg for mesmers.

make sure u kill unload illusion asap, they do dmg.. use shortbow vs 2 mesmers.

and remember- mesmers are easy kills

You seriously believe this will work against any half decent mesmer? I really would like to have a duel function in this game to have some 1v1 against people like you.

Caltrops is pretty good against Mesmers. the bleed stacks will poof their illusions pretty quickly.

make sure you pay attention to Confusion debuffs too, btw. Thief is a very fast attack class so Confusion can kill you outright. don’t attack while confused. its a good time to stealth and wait it out.

Punctuation ftw…

Just so everyone knows during the mesmer downed state the clones won’t have the red arrow or whatever above them. Wait for the clone and just look for the real one by finding the arrow.

It’s simple: we, uh, kill the mesmer.

But in the end it really is all about who is at the opposing side and what is your own setup. Bad mix and you’ll be biting dust – if you end up winning then kudos to you.
