Any hardcore WvW guilds use Thiefs?
A big one you are missing is being able to double down targets. You will want to always keep an eye out for anyone who gets downed and isn’t in an absolute chicken cluck of AoE’s. You should be there in their last moments to show them your finisher before sending them back to spawn.
TL:DR
Don’t forget stealth stomps
and refuses to spare the life in return for the surrender at discretion (unconditional surrender)
of a vanquished opponent.
Thieves don’t really belong in zergs. We usually stay behind enemy zergs and wipe out any targets that’ve wondered off and/or close to dying. I say this because other classes like Warriors, Guardians, Eles, and Necros are the real meat for the pain train. Sure we can blast water fields and throw down poison fields and dagger storm + signet of malice is hilarious in a zerg, but we roam/scout/kill zerglings that wondered off much more efficiently than being in the core of a zerg.
I tell people the points you’ve put up there all the time, and some agree, some disagree. If it’s an organized guild that frequents combo fields and GvG, they’ll want thieves. If it’s a zerg who doesn’t know anything but being sheep, they’ll laugh at a thief zerging.
And you could possibly ran over by a zerg.
I don’t really fight in zergs that often (though I can and do), but I do the occasional WvW guild raid and GvG (20vs20) with [EP].
The thief group utilities (aoe condi cleans from agil sig, aoe swiftness from thrill of the crime, aoe boon share from bountiful theft, aoe stealth, aoe venom share, etc) are most useful in small group scenarios (2-5).
However, in large groups, our most potent ability is countering those classes who really do add a lot to large groups (Ele & Mes mainly, though others can do it) through their fire/static/water fields. Because large group fights generally revolve around heavies leaping and blasting inside of these fields.
Generally speaking, the Ele’s, Mes, Necro, Engis, and Rangers are on what many people call the “periphery” of a large group. Our job is to stalk that periph and down anyone who resides there.
When not actually in combat (in the “STACK!!!! BLAST!!!” phase) we are a great addition due to cluster bomb, but IMO we should quickly separate from the “front line” and take our place in the periph.
