forgot to mention, i already got swiftness on dodge and 3 teleports in my build and signet of shadows. more movement speed is always nice, though.

If you have 30 trickery and 15 acrobatics and use Orrian Truffle Soup you will have 10sec/21 sec from steal, and just about as close to the other 10 seconds from dodging.

If you cycle the dodges (swiftness on dodges) and withdraw/signet of Agility properly, you can get perma swiftness.

don’t forget, acrobatics also buffs boon duration. 20 in acrobatics + 30 trickery =
12 seconds / 21 seconds and 3.5 seconds on dodge. that’s more than perma-swiftness.

Why not? Every HS is 600 pt jump with the swiftness, and you can make 5-6 of them in a raw. Warrior however needs to be bad enough so you can beat him without ini…

Bulls Charge+Rush+Whirlwind is easily 3000 range. If they happen to have sword on their other weapon set that’s another 900ish range.

As long as a warrior doesn’t get CC’d before they take off, it’s almost impossible to catch them.

As long as a warrior doesn’t get CC’d before they take off, it’s almost impossible to catch them.

Infiltrator signet is 900 range, and steal can be buffed to 15k, shadow-step (sword mainhand) can get you another quick 900 + a CC. These are teleports – so they can actually be quicker than the warrior skills…but yeah, that’s an ideal situation.

Spamming heartseeker while swift is a more likely scenario, which will keep you about 1k behind the warrior for a long time (just a hair out of steal range).

Really if the warrior wants to get away, they have a really good chance of doing it, or at the very least it’ll be a looong-distance race.

Well thief has: 1200 shadow step + 1500 steal + 800 withdraw (if u turn fast) + 900 Infiltrator’s Signet + 3000-3600 HS spam (takes 3-4s) = 7400-8000 range is u use all…

Yes and no…it’s easy to show the numbers when theory crafting, but when in combat, you just blew half your initiative getting that warrior down to 10% health, and then he decides to run, it actually makes it tricky. He gets a head start-of course, and as others point out, he can create a 3k gap in a few seconds. So you need reaction time to catch him quick, or a solid mobility / initiative regen build to catch him slowly.

3000 distance you can make in seconds if you either carry sword, dagger mainhand or shortbow + steal + (your stunbreaker teleport) = you are there in record time even nonspecced

Well thief has: 1200 shadow step + 1500 steal + 900 withdraw (if u turn fast) + 900 Infiltrator’s Signet + 3000-3600 HS spam (takes 3-4s) = 7500-8100 range is u use all…

Shadowstep = -1 utility slot, and must be saved for chasing the warrior instead of breaking a stun, evading a burst or removing conditions or escaping.
steal 1500 = -1 trait, and there are better options..
900 withdraw = lol wut? It’s about ~500
Roll for initiative = about ~700, -1 utility slot, stunbreaker etc.
infiltrators signet = -1 utility slot, must also be saved for chasing the warrior.
HS spam = has delays which makes the usefulness when chasing a moving target about ~360 each, you also run out of initiative.

All together.
1200 shadowstep> 5x hs 1800 (15 initiative) > withdraw 500 > Roll for Initiative 700 > 4x hs 1440 > Infiltrator’s Signet 900 > Steal 1500:
~8100 range, 0 utility left and 5-6 initiative when you reach the warrior.

Warrior, if he’s norn S/Sh + GS.
Bulls Charge 600 > Sh bash 300 > Savage leap 600 > Rush 1200 > whirl 450 > snow leopard dash 1600 > snow leopard leap 600 > leap 600 > whirl 450 and so on..
At a much lesser tradeoff (still a tradeoff):
6400, high damaging abilities still left, 2 utilities

So under these conditions the thief wins with 1700, but by the cost of it all
it’s much cheaper for the warrior since he still has damaging and defensive abilities left.

Ofc the thief could be norn too , adding 2200 range, but that’s rare compared to norn warrior.

I’m actually thinking about rerolling thief as norn only for the SL dash.

These numbers are not exact, I based them on impressions and personal experience,
RfI is a bit longer than withdraw, and I can nearly fully close the gap after a withdraw using a heartseeker. And any high range gap closer will suffice after using both in a row.

If I was at home atm, I would test them out to get the right numbers.
I might be wrong since I just based on impressions.

And thief has poor access to swiftness without using centaur runes or steal,
so you can’t really rely on that your HS will be 600 range.

The warrior can pick up this non-relevant elite skill when he sees a situation where
it is going to be needed. Or if he manages to leave combat while running from the thief and quickly switch the elite.

And to the elite skill as thief.
I just think about how nice it would be to have additional mobility and be
able to get away from zergs running, leaping and teleporting 5000 units away within a couple of seconds while in stealth.

Well I can make an advice here:
I’m plying 0 30 0 30 10 build without centarus runes (use lyssa) and I can keep perma swiftness. I have 13s swiftness from trickery on steal + around 3s every dodgeroll + vigor on heal every 15s.
What concerns HS: I only need to dodge once to make 3 HS in a raw with swiftness

and you’ll have a 10-12 dodges in a row

obviously you have to spam CC. but it’s a lot easier if you have perma swiftness along with the cripple spam. it was hilarious when i had 40% movement speed (kite fortune -but probably 33% if it doesn’t break the 33% cap) and spamming dagger 4 and sword AA, the warrior couldn’t really move away from me at all.

heartseeker can be used in place of a shortbow 900 range teleport as a movement skill, in fact since its a leap with the swiftness on dodge it’ll go farther than 1800+.

heartseeker does have more uses than being spammed on a full health warrior.
if some warrior is really giving you that much trouble then leave him and go find something slow like a mesmer or ele, you should have no trouble catching someone when their only movement skill is stuck on a 40 second CD thanks to all the QQ.

it’s not really an option to ignore warriors when roaming warriors are increasing by the day. and this is to make it easier, I didn’t say I didn’t catch any :P

that’s if you use D/D. I use S/D so I don’t have heartseeker, however the sword AA cripples if I can land it.

why not 97%? but yea 90%+ condi reduction is pretty common nowadays for a warrior. really gotta spam the cripples.

After using them for so long, I simply can’t live without Centaur runes and Withdraw.

Also, we had this thief vs warrior speed debate not too long ago over on the WvW boards. I did a few speed trials with each character and then put the two best runs head-to-head. (Note: I prefer heartseeker spam for mobility, but I went with the suggested infiltrator’s arrow instead).

Since this was intended to be a footrace, I didn’t use any teleport skills requiring a target and STILL found thief to be slightly faster. Realistically, even though you can catch the warrior eventually, he’ll have plenty of time to map away.
