Are we the most hated profession?
I thought Rangers were.
Are we really the most hated profession?
By other classes in small skirmish WvW?
Yup.
Reasoning? My signature.
I think so. But Mesmers keep challenging our first place =)
I feel a lot of thieves have ego issues, which generally earns them their bad reputation. And I say this as a thief main who has had similar experiences as OP.
It is neck and neck… I’ll give ya that.
Yes…stealth+burst is incredibly frustrating and feels like your opponent had a 100000% easier time than actually winning a 15-20s battle. Its also REALLY hard to counter unless someone shows you how, and even then you will get picked off and say “what the heck just happened?!” When I see a thief running to/from a keep, its my first target. This is b/c of hate, but also b/c if I don’t, I know he will pop out when I am softened up and spike me down.
That being said, I am rolling thief myself. Just going for the evady/sustainy kind of thief rather than the stealthy/bursty kind
Envy. We can do things they could only dream.
Some people don’t take kindly to Thieves. Especially since most of people tend to roll a Thief FOR roaming the WvW grounds due to the low risk and high reward, the player knows that, and the opponents do know that aswell.
The thing is… well, the whole concept stinks of the cheesy and generic assassin everyone would want to play, most of them are arrogant, they will taunt, they will consider that all the other classes are ‘cattle’ and act like their level of skill is far beyond the target he’s going to engage.
For obvious reasons, there are very few chances that a Thief will be taken down unless very bad, if a Thief with the above paragraph’s description don’t even know how my Engineer works and wastes his Basilisk Venom + Mug + CnD on my Gear Shield just to get literally exploded five second later, I will laugh at him, yes. Because even if the class has better tools than most, you still require a little knowledge.
(Plus they all dress in the same manner with their whole Assassin’s Creed wet fantasy)
I hate thieves for one reason, they keep running away before I can kill them. Very annoying.

^^This.
When a thief hides behind an obstacle and tries to insagib you out of stealth, they will obviously be laughed at when they fail. They deserve it.
I remember I was overlooking the supply camp next to the jumping puzzle and I get hit by this thief out of nowhere. I threw him off the cliff to his (oh so satisfying) death.
Other classes deserve respect when you beat them. They deserve a “/bow” for a good fight. No one has ever bowed to a thief that tried to gank them in a sneaky manner.
Go figure.
Thieves are hated just as eleys and mesmers. Ther is god good thieves and god bad thieves its the same for eles and mesmers and yes a bad ele is very very fun to kill.

Get over yourself. Any tactful person, regardless of profession, will strike first if given the chance. Thieves just do it better. It’s in the nature of archetype.
“Fighting dirty” and cheesy one trick pony builds is hardly thief exclusive.
When has a thief ever blown or pushed you off a cliff? Never, said everybody.

Lol. Then don’t complain when you pay the price for being a prick. If it’s the “archetype”, then the consequences of being that archetype are ridicule and scorn.
Get over it!

I think you nailed it… I suspect the majority of players don’t do any research outside of the game, but learn from experience, slowly. In a longer fight, you can figure out what works and how to counter the enemy. Against a backstab combo, you don’t have that luxury. Even against other burst builds, you at least see them coming.

I loved that game!!! I’ve never played assassin’s creed.

My only complaint that I have is you are shoehorning every thief player into this false absolution of yours. I dont like being called a prick. Especially when all I’m trying to do is be useful to my server in wvw, with whatever limited methods and tools are available to me.

Look you can’t deny that being sneaky and trying to gank someone with an easy win and running away when things don’t work out is cheap. You may say “I’m only trying to help my server” or “it’s the archetype”. But the fact is that those techniques won’t earn you respect.
Why do you care? Do what yo do and suck up the humiliation of people dancing over your dead body or laughing. That’s what happens to the archetype. Part of the territory as they say no?
If you want respect, then show up in front of people where they can see you, do a “/bow”, and then fight and stealth all you want. Then no one will humiliate you if you lose.
But act cheesy and you get what you deserve. Where is the confusion in all this?

Even though I hate thieves more then anything in this game I would be lieing if I said this isn’t funny because I would probably laugh hysterically for a while.

I don’t play a thief, but generally thieves are my least favorite encounters. So much stealth, it’s hard to keep track of you guys! That said, I’m a blink-happy Mesmer popping all over the place. Between the stealth and the teleports on both sides, it usually ends up being a dizzying stalemate.
Came across a clever crew ganking the other night though. Two Mesmers pumping out clones, and one Thief hiding among all those extra bodies.

The low field of vision this game have also doesn’t help to love professions who teleport/stealth away. Bring us more vision of our surrounding and it will be easier to keep track of what’s going on. Right now you gotta turn your camera non stop just to try to spot where you last shadowstepped.
In a game where you need to react fast with dodge and counters, losing time just to reacquire a target because of forced vision tunneling is not fun.
Panhauramix Guardian/Pistoleros Engineer/ Orbite Thief

I don’t hate thieves because I am one and I know how to counter them while playing against them…
I hate guardians the most in wvw and trap rangers most in spvp.
When I was a Ret Paladin in Burning Crusade, people would /spit on me in raids or dungeons.
I’ve been operating multiple web sites for several months now, and the very first one I’ve had hacked was the one dedicated to teaching people how to play Thieves, only a week or two after listing it on these forums.
I think people really do hate Thieves if they’re willing to go that far.
I think so. But Mesmers keep challenging our first place =)
very true lol. thing about thieves tho…is u actually have to be good to “seem” OP. mesmers any nub can make clones/phantams as a zerker and let them do dmg and blow them up with a button as tehy dodge/run in a circle :P watch a s/d video of a pro . then watch a mesmer one. HUGE difference.
from they way anet keeps nerfing thieves compared to other classes, i’d say yes.
even in pve, get rejected a lot even in low level fractal runs even if you’re
already tens of levels higher in fracs. a lot more so than my other classes.
.
I only really play wvw so I also do my daily on wvw maps even if I’m not in the mood to fight people. Normally I will try to run away and if they don’t give up, I down them and leave them like that. I imagine this tells most people that they are annoying me and I rarely have any further issues if I run into that player again.
Thieves are the only class that seems to think that because I’m collecting, I’m gank fodder and that’s after I give them my annoyance treatment. They will try different angles (skills, hiding places etc) and if they still fail, some come at me with stealthed allies. Thief is the only class that can give me the sensation of blowing/fearing someone off a cliff with it’s general gameplay.
Makonne – Hybrid Regen Ranger
Ya thieves are hated.
Don’t care honestly because I’d do the same thing on another class
I play a Mesmer and I don’t ever see any personal Mesmer hate (just general dislike toward the class on the whole), yet I see abuse towards thieves all the times. People laughing at corpses, insulting them in /say (even if you can’t see it) etc. I’m responsible for it too, when roaming me and my mate refer to you as scum and seek to destroy you with a zealous fervour the like of which you’ll never see.
If we see an enemyA thief toying with an enemyB group, we’ll go and assist enemyB in smoting the thief; only when his corpse bloodies the battlefield will we engage enemyB.

In every mmo thieves/rogues are the most hated class.
Is it the class mechanics that provke the hate?
Is it the gamers behind the class that usually are the worst kind ? (maybe they RP their class )
No one will ever now.

It’s both, but really the fault for the focused hate lies in the mechanics. Without the mechanics the terrible people are spread around, but with the jerk mechanics in place the jerks congregate on that class, focusing the hate of the terrible people in 1 place (which just so happens to have the mechanics hate in there as well).
In short, stop putting rogue archetypes in multiplayer games.

The problem is not the rogue archetype imo.But the fact that in mmos rogue classes have every ability of various rogue archetypes at once.Which make a mean mofo and a compilation of jerk mechanics ready to be anleashed on the world in the wrong hands xD
It’s like the unspoken trinity system.
Be a warrior class for heavy armor and weapons.
Be a caster class to heal or sling spells.
Be a rogue to be a jerk ( at least on pvp)
Age of Conan Assassins were mostly fine, there was no hate for them – but that had to do with every class having stealth, and no ability to reenter stealth once you enter combat (i.e. you do backstab from stealth, and than fight normally).
SWTOR Assassins were ok once again since they did not really abuse stealth, and were not real “assassins” per se – you could play them even as one of the best tanks ingame.
GW2 Thiefs are … like the worst thief stereotype in MMO ever – ability to reenter and remain stealthy at will, repeated ability to do backstab damage, massive damage playing in most cases bigger role than survivability thus “low armor low hp” being pretty much irrelevant considering play mechanics of the thief (than again, they still can be one shotted if do mistakes).
So yeah. Thiefs are hated. Mesmers are on out there as well. While fun classes, both are badly designed in terms of what MMO experience taugth people about class design and mechanics that should be abused or not (well, at least theres no stunlock thieves here).
That is however normal problem of modern paradigm that “all classes should be equal” which is pretty stupid and usually results in top DPS and healer classes being most OP in most MMOs. I much preferred when different classes had different clear purposes and excelled with them instead of trying to balance all classes to be equal to each other in all situations.
Also, if you want real thief hate – should have played Ultima Online back when thief could steal your weapon out of your hands, plant armed explosion potion in your backpack and than backstab you all inside “safe” guardzone.

It’s because all thief players are inherently cheats and all other class players are inherently honorable.

I’ll speak for myself, thank you very much.
I only act like a jerk when provoked. Otherwise I’m a very respectful pvp’er.
It’s gotten so bad that now I wont attack anyone first. Ever. If you see a tarnished coast thief just walking by and ignoring you, it’s probably me.
The problem here is rampant ignorance. I shouldn’t have to go to such great lengths to educate people in ways to beat me. As my Guild Leader position and love of the class dictates, I will do what is necessary to defend the thief community.
If you decide to brush off my gesture and be disrespectful, I will remember who you are and I will show no mercy if there is a second encounter. Every dirty trick in the book, Dagger/Pistol is wonderful for this.
In the end, I wont ever stoop down to the level of laughing and other scornful mockery.

I’m pretty sure he understands the repercussion when being a jerk. That being said, he stated even without being a jerk, he gets hated on neways.
And my defense to that is that it’s only fair or normal if someone wants to seek out that person who /taunted or killed them out of profession descrimination and return the favor. Cuz I sure as heII do the same if others do it first. The cycle continues~~ it’s a game, if u cant take the heat then dont touch it.

I know you can (and no i dont know this person) but i know how you feel.

This is probably a sensible answer. The burst thieves have and mobility allow them to take out unwary and inexperienced players. However – as a thief – many other classes hit me harder than I hit them. As for fighting thieves – its simple, equip defensive abilities. I in fact equip abilities -that can be defensive Shadow refuge, black powder and shadowstep because I have an aversion to dying to anyone. I’m classic thief you thought ran away until boom, he’s back when you weren’t paying attention. As for D/D front loading thieves they blow everything on their first encounter and really you shouldn’t venture out in pvp without stun breakers and some GTFO abilities. I can say I have come across players from each class who do well and provide a good fight and I try and think and learn about their tricks. Gw2 is good in that there’s usually always a way.
