Auto-attack makes hidden thief trait useless
thats weird, im pretty sure i have autoattack enabled and me stealing doesnt start me attacking at all.
Try it again.
It attacks 1 time 100% of the time for me.

Yeah it’s broken for me as well. I wouldn’t say that it happens 100% of the time, but feels like at least half of the time, it will auto-attack after a steal, breaking the traited stealth in this situation.
Same, doesnt happen 100% of the time, and it seems to help if i can run through the person/mob that im stealing from. It shouldn’t be that complicated for the effect to work as intended, especially since every other stealth abilities seems to cancel the auto attack just fine.
Do you have the trait specced that causes steal to do damage? That treats the steal as an attack and will break stealth.
Dragonbrand
I have the traits that cause steal to do damage and stealth you… most of the time it works. I shadowstep over, go invisisble, and do damage, but thinking about it more closely… I tend to use it on people as they’re running at the node I’m guarding. I shadowstep to where they just were, go stealth, but they’re behind me, so if I am auto-attacking once I’m missing and therefore not coming out of stealth… I guess. Have to experiment more with that.

This needs to be fixed.

I have Mug plus stealth on steal … doesn’t break me out of stealth at all
This could use a look at, but you should probably stop leaving auto attack on regardless. At least for PvP, where it can really get you in trouble.
Yea ive seen this too.. I don’t know if I have had it do it 100%, not saying you haven’t, but it is quite often.
I’m sure it will get fixed shortly. Should be a simple fix.
I think this is a latency issue. I have autoattack on, with the mug trait and I never break out of stealth when I steal.
I tend to agree with this. I can also say that this applies to any stealth ability. If you use stealth there is a great chance your autoattack will ruin it.
From my testing, the auto-attack that breaks the stealth from Hidden Thief always occurred when I was wielding a ranged weapon (pistol or bow) in my main hand, and never occurred otherwise (sword or dagger in main hand.) It also only occured when my weapons were already drawn. (drawing weapons to start combat negates the errant auto-attack.) I can’t for the life of me think of a reason why this would occur, or why you would want it to. I just hope they remove this functionality soon.

I have never managed to get my character to not attack, tried all weapon combinations holstered or not.
Hidden Thief is bugged and only works correctly if Auto Attack is off
With Hidden Thief off and Auto Attack On
After I Steal, Auto attack weapon 1 is initiated.
With Hidden Thief on and Auto Attack On
After I Steal, Auto attack is not initiated BUT the character automatically hits weapon skill 1 one time and breaks stealth. Combat is engaged using 1 attack of ‘non stealth version of attack’ while in stealth and stealth is broken.
With Hidden Thief on and Auto Attack off
Character remains in stealth and weapon skill 1 becomes ‘from stealth attack’.
Typically going into stealth disables auto attack all together.
Hide In Shadows, Shadow Refuge, and Blinding Powder all disable auto attack. They all switch weapon skill 1 to the ‘from stealth attacks’ version and wait for user command before performing next attack.
Strangely, Stealing from an enemy assumes I want to attack with Weapon Skill 1.’
I have posted a bug report and would appreciate fellow thief attention:

Yes this is incredibly annoying with hidden thief, the way it does not stop auto attacking like other stealth skills do. Please fix this Anet!! I like having autoattack on in general, and the other stealth skills are fine. But for some reason hidden thief doesn’t work.
This sounds like an oversight in the mechanics design. The mechanics are clashing.
- Stealing is being considered an act of aggression, and enabling your auto-attack
- Stealth is disabling attacks
Auto-attacking is a mechanic built into all classes, not just Thief, so it may be considered dominant within the system.
So, ‘1’ is overriding ‘2’.

Pretty sure I saw it mentioned in the main bug thread too but the problem seems to be with the speed of projectiles. The activation on steal is instantaneous, while projectiles move more slowly. Which means you fire a shot with a ranged weapon, steal (giving you stealth) and that gets immediately broken by the projectile you fired before stealing. I have the same problem using blinding powder with ranged weapons. The stealth from powder activates instantly and then is broken almost straight away by my then in-flight projectile.
Its quite annoying because it means I have to stop attacking for a second or so to make sure my skills wont be wasted, which makes blinding powder far less effective as an escape skill.
Yeah this happens to me too.
I noticed it more in PvE than PvP though.
if the dinstance between you and the target is the range of your weapon 1 skill, all your signets and steal will trigger autoattack, this has always been like that.
“Buff-signets” and steal&stealth do not work with range weapons such as pistol/Shortbow because of the range of the weapon 1 skill. Try it. You can not steal with shortbow without autoattack, and using a signet to “buff” only works when your rangemeter under your weapon 1 skill is red.
This is the reason why you can not use steal&stealth or Assassin Signet in close combat without using weapon skill 1 right after and it seems bugged.
Believe me, it is not.
If you know about it and pay attention to it, you will learn to work around. You will be glad to be able to not need to spam weapon skill 1 just because it could break stealth and you will have to be more aware of your target and improve your play as thief.
You have 2 options here. You either deactivate auto attack or you learn to pay attention to the range/distance beween you and your target.
Here, my example for steal & stealth: While in close combat and your steal gets up, start to run away of your target, he/she will follow. Watch the red bar under your weapon 1, as soon its red “out of range” use steal.
You will teleport back to the target behind you and stealth. Now, because he followed you and kept running, he will be in front of you now → if you hit 1 right after steal you get an instant backstab.
It’s not good anyways.
Cloak and Dagger has a cast time. Just C&D + steal and you’ll stealth and do more damage.
There are better traits in that tree anyways than Hidden Thief.
