Hello there!
To keep the topic/question short:
Basilisk Venom (the only venom i ever use) will, as known be consumed or “used up” if an enemy evades blocks etc. the attack.
However, when using it, you can stab around in the air without it being consumed out of combat, but sometimes in combat it actually gets used up by stabbing the air?
Thief is really not my most played profession, but i enjoy it when i decide to go for a few trickery hours. Maybe im just stupid, but i havent found a thread about it nor information on GW2 wiki on why it SOMETIMES gets used up by hitting non player/npc pixels (excluding block/blind etc)
Would be greatful for some help with this
Some objects can be damaged, and therefore can be hit. This includes things you can damage with your weapon, such as the clocktower windows on Khylo, the stacks of boxes on Khylo, the trebuchet on Khylo and Stronghold, and the gates on Legacy and Stronghold. It also includes things you can’t damage with your weapon, such as the destroyable buildings and walls on Khylo and Stronghold. You can also use them to your advantage if you are running */D, because you can stealth off of them.
Thanks for the quick reply,
but to clarify, basilisk venom should never be consumed in or out of combat if nothing is getting hit? Not counting evades, blocks, blinds and buildings etc.
It seems we’re both right. I always thought it consumed charges when you got the effect from landing a skill, because it must have counted as a hit, in or out of combat. Cloak and dagger just gave me stealth without consuming basi on a building, which I can hit but not damage (same result while in and out of combat). Yet it gives me stealth and consumes basi on the Khylo crates that allow you to jump up onto one of the buildings to shortcut up to the clock tower, which cannot be damaged but had one noticeable difference from the buildings - hitting them puts you in combat. (Hitting the crates that can be destroyed by your weapon of course remove a charge and put you in combat too.) So it’s possible you hit a stealthed enemy sneaking past you, or an object which when hit consumed the charge. Given that I wasn’t 100% right initially, I’m not going to assume there aren’t other types of objects that can be hit which remove charges but might not put you in combat, whether from intention or a bug.
Well i thank you Impact for putting effort into trying it out and taking your time to respond, really appreciate it.
Will be more selective with my B.Venom usage from now on.
Thanks again

Stabbing the air while in combat count as a “miss” which will consume the venom’s charge. This is why if look at how Thieves play, they activate the venom before showstepping, which will guarantee a hit and stun your target. It takes practice to get this right.

The most possible candidate for consuming your venom in PVP without hitting a target is during Battle of Kyolo where there’re some boxes laying on the roads.
I’m vastly annoyed by those objects when I play a class that relies on offensive skill as mobility measure because it’ll often force me into combat and slows me down.
I propose the change that a Venom charge will only be used up if what you hit/would have hit if not for evades, misses, blocks, you name it, would actually have been affected by the venom. This would prevent you from wasting it on things like walls, crates, downed players (which I personally think should be affected by it) and other things that it wouldn’t have had an effect on anyways.

You mean “roll back the nerf”?
Its functioning pretty ok. If you attack a target and they evade or dodge or block it, then it should very well be used up, just like if someone attacks you with a CC, and you dodge or evade it. That skill is still used up and put on cooldown.
I just think it should be changed to where you dont use up the charge on boxes and crap. If the enemy evades/blocks it, well played. But a stupid box?
Also, as a note, if you run Hide in Shadows, so many people know to disrupt that, basi has the same animation.
I have used it to pull interrupts/knockbacks out of people when Im getting focused.
Then HIS, though Basi is on CD.
