Best Duo Partner for Thief
Mesmer. Great at PvP, PvE.
You’ll be incredibly BORED as a Mesmer in PvE for the first 40-50 levels.
I’m dead serious.
Depending on the kind of thief your partner is going to play, you could be a great asset to him as any tanky class (Eles are good at that although they require a higher skill floor than Guardians).
But I agree that a roaming Mesmer/Thief pair in WvW will be a hard encounter for everyone.
Mesmer, Thief, or Warrior for duo-roaming in WvW with a Thief because they can have high mobility and/or stealth.
WvW would probably be the thing I’ll do the least amount of. I will do a ton more of PvP and PvE than WvW. So Mesmer, but they can be boring. I like the idea of higher skill floor for ele since that would keep me from getting bored. Any certain build? Or would maybe even a ranger work better than the professions I mentioned. I would consider going ranger if it was worth it.
Forget Rangers, they are terrible in PvE.
For PvE, I would suggest you any S/D or D/D combo, zerker stats. Your role would be that of kiting enemies, enpowering your mate with blast finishes, and occasionally heal him. Aurashare would be nice to have too.
Consider using Conjuring Weapons in Dungeons.
Elementalists are definitely more fun than mesmers in PvE, no doubt about that. They deal more AoE damage, are more survivable and more importantly are a ton faster than mesmers: mesmers are the slowest among the classes regarding moving around.
IMO Mesmer is a great partner (specially for my venom sharing Thief as I get full potential from all the extra leeching). They have some great tricks together (and I love using Cluster Bomb on ethereal combo fields for shinny spheres!!).
Engineer, you can both stealth. so you can sneak past mobs. take skillpoints together and such.

I’ve seen alot of people say mesmer is boring on forums, so I think it’s between ele and engi. Any more feedback on those 2 PvE and PvP?
Well engineer can stealth, they can jump further than any other class with a spesific skillcombo, which allos them to reach places other’s cant or do huge shortcuts. they can drop oil to knockdown ppl. they also got most launches. a bit less tanky than ele. both are very high skillcap. basicly the class of utlity the good thing with this is that you can work together and skip trough tons of mobs. you can send me a pm if you want tips how you can combo things together.
Elemtalist, better damage and better tankynes. better for large scale combat.
