Q:
I’m looking for a good critical based PvE build, for the thief i’m going to start working on soon. Any suggestions?
Restrictions: Human, weps sword main hand (idk dagger or pistol) and shortbow for secondary wep, significant amount of either vit or toughness from equipment, preferably lots of stealth and decent-high acrobatics.
For all i know, the perfect thief build with these restrictions might be impossible. But can anyone try?

A:
Critical builds are all about the multiplicative synergy between Power and Critical Damage (and having the Precision to make crits happen all the time). To me, “significant amount of either vit or toughness from equipment” implies neglecting at least one of those stats. At which point you’re not really getting the big crits that define critical builds.
If you like Acrobatics, you’ve already got really powerful built-in defense even without gear, thanks to tons and tons of dodging.
A critical build sans large amounts of precision is somewhat possible but only running D/D with the 100 % crit-from-stealth trait. This allows you to ensure an autocrit on a sufficiently high amount of damage (back stab) to make stacking critical damage worth it. It isn’t much of a PvE build though, and it isn’t going to work well with a sword mainhand.
Theoretically you could sacrifice the critical damage portion of the equation and gear for power/precision + vit or toughness, which would give you crit volume without the numbers to back it up. This could work with on-crit procs though, like the ones granted by the Critical Strikes line and weapon sigils.
Stack power, get the most efficient means of crit damage (divinity/ruby). If you want high acrobatics then you can look at stacking might from dodge to boost. Get a reliable form of fury (I like fury on steal) to help out your lower precision.
If you want any toughness/vit you will have to make some sacrifices in dps.

Would be something like this. If you can get fury uptime from food friend or someone you will have 70-75% critical rate, might on dodge will make your attack roughtly 3000, 10 points in shadow arts for condition removal in stealth, that way you can keep more invisibilitys on your toolbar.
Though i would suggest S/p for PvE, but it has no simple access to invis, as thats not what you asked for. Swaping S/D for S/P might be good if you do only PvE

I have the perfect build for you, but the Berserker gear requirement may be expensive.

(Get Runes of Divinity if you’re rich enough, otherwise Runes of Rage are an adequate substitute)
Features:
This build focuses on maximizing Evasion, Blind, Stealth and Healing to compensate for Berserker equipment. When things get too hairy, the Shortbow is there for extra Range and Evasion.
This is a build I use for high level Fractals. My role is to inflict massive multi-target damage and shut-down dangerous (but daze-vulnerable) targets. I also have two area stealth utilities for reviving allies and completing Fractal objectives.
