TOG – (The Orrian Ghosts)
Per the topic title, one of the things I find frustrating with Cloak and Dagger is half of the time I miss and lose Initiative, or I do land the blow, and I don’t go stealth. Am I the only one that struggles with C&D?
I don’t like the resource management of the Thief, one or two missed attacks and I’m left scrambling till my Initiative comes back. With my Ranger I can spam abilities all day without regarding to managing resources. I don’t mind having to watch what I do, I just don’t like micro-managing Initiative.
Try not having a target. Whenever I C&D I just make sure I run at anything and face it. That way you don’t get distracted by your target icon and you can adjust on the fly. This game actually hardly requires targets it seems.
The init use on miss is probably by design to punish.
Cloak and Dagger is already a very strong ability and I feel your pain. I would be content with half initiative returned on a failed cnd
Or it could just cloak you regardless of whether you hit a target.
Cloak and Dagger is fine as it is. It should definitely not return initiative or stealth if missed. This is an ability that requires a lot of practice to use successfully and should punish users for missing it or spamming it too quickly.
The loss of initiative is definitely to punish but that’s how all Thief skills work. If c/d returned initiative on miss or was a guaranted stealth it would be too effective. The best way to ensure it connects is to set it up with a cc. If you want to steal before you c/d you can hit c/d right before you steal and it starts the cast first, making it more likely to connect.
Mine hasn’t been missing unless I actually stop moving and wait for the animation. And I have no reason to do that. You’re not rooted when you push the button, you can keep moving. I often activate CnD as I’m running into melee range, timing it so that the attack hits right as I’m in range.
It’s super punishing for players with a higher ping (I’m in Australia), I can’t even land auto attack if someone is running away from me and I’m using Signet of Shadows.
Have to actually hope someone stops moving to land anything other than steal or heartseeker (which seems to have it’s own issues).
It’s pretty frustrating when you get punished because of where you live.

What else can they do about it? Tuning combat for higher latency players actually just makes it worse for all players (sluggish combat).
Once you get used to the timing it it’s not too bad. However the queue system really screws Thieves in thekitten and if you accidentally queued CnD x2 you will waste twice the init and break your stealth.
Also using steal will activate your auto attack if you have it toggled.
It would be nice if CnD didn’t cost initiative unless it actually hit something.

I’m just crossing my fingers for oceanic servers sometime down the road, otherwise it’s just something I’ll have to deal with.
And when it gets too frustrating I’ll play warrior for a bit =]
I don’t think we’ll see Oceanic servers, as it would introduce WvW issues (WvW would still need to be hosted over there) and/or sPvP issues (you’d play on a server in the US).
Which means the net effect would be minimal as it doesn’t really matter that much in PvE anyway, as CnD is usually easy to land on mobs.
PS: Trust me, I feel your pain. 250ms from Perth; the laws of physics won’t change any time soon.

Good points.
Epic sigh -_-
EDIT:
Anyone know anything about this?

Private servers are intended for hosting custom sPvP tournaments—as in you pay a fee to ArenaNet, rather than self-hosting.
if you must have this CnD to be hit., try pre-cast CnD and use steal, pretty much a guaranteed hit
CnD is best used on a crippled foe because the chance of missing is much lower since you can maintain close range on them.
Even when I’m facing my target, sometimes the ability does not hit. And two wasted C&D means I’m left to scramble while waiting for Initiative to come back.
Hit box is fine. Just work on timing it.
Im standing right on top of people who are basilisk’d and missing it.
