Could someone explain to me what exactly “culling” is? I hear that it’s a “major” problem but have no idea what it is. If i could guess, is it when a thief stealths and when he reappears for some reason i can’t target him for a few seconds (unless i manually click him)? Not sure.

Thanks ;D

Notice how when you are in the crowded Lion’s Arch (for example, near the bank NPC), it seemed empty until you go closer and you see players start to materialized? That’s culling. This is ANet’s way to ensure you don’t get performance issue when a location is espcially crowded, allowing players to slowly materialze when you get closer.

Unfortunately culling applies to stealthed Thief, causing their stealth to “appear” longer (because they remain invisible during culling).

Its a problem in Wvw when their servers cant send the data fast enough to the players so people are invisible when really they arent. This is made worse by classes with stealth or high mobility. You wont have this problem in Spvp. Somewhere i saw that tab targeting allows you to target the thief.

It adds a extra second or two to each stealth.

It probably adds “a extra second or two” to each stealth but a thief that stacks stealth traits can be effectively invisible for the majority of a fight in WvW. Blocking/dodging something like C&D just has the thief throw some other stealth.

I have read that tab targeting allows a thief to be targeted as soon as they become visible (to the game) even if you cannot see them as well. This has not been my experience trying it over the last dozen or so fights in WvW. I could easily be missing them from the center of window or whatever the game uses to choose tab targets so I’m not saying it doesn’t work at all but if it does I haven’t clued in to how to make it do so.

Culling is the server’s way of limiting characters rendered to the client machine. I believe the number in WvW was said to be 40 at some point. In a 30v30 zerg fight only 40 people will be rendered at any given time, meaning that if a Thief, Mesmer, Engineer, or any other class goes stealth, the next guy in line renders and the person that went invis is now being culled. In fights that are 1v1, 5v5, or even 10v10 in open fields there is no culling happening.

The word itself has been so incorrectly used in this community that many people don’t realize that it only happens in larger fights. I have fought tons of thieves and never had an issue outside of large fights. Most people that die to a thief 1v1 complain about “culling” as a way to convince themselves they weren’t beaten fairly. Watch for the black swirly animation and you’ll see exactly where they are.

Did you ever fought against a thieve on PVP? It doesn’t require be a genious to notice there’s a big difference between the amount of time a thieve remains stealth on wvw and pvp respectively,

I don’t want to be mean, but it’s obvious you didn’t play PvP ever,

Don’t talk to me about toughness and vitality, damage avoidance is all in this game

He never said he did, he said he had no issues with culling outside large fights. Large fights implies WvW, not PvP.
