DH Trap Spammer
Short answer: No.
Long answer: No. Fighting a dragonhunter trapper on his traps is suicidal. The key is to fight him away from traps and watch for when he sets down traps and avoid them and block, interrupt, and blind him if you can to make him traps useless.
Only way thief can win a fight like that is with p/p and even then it’s scatchy as hell. Best to just avoid the point or wait for support.
haven’t tried on thief yet, but what I do on ele is trigger the traps by dodge rolling through the edge and then wait them out, and then go in
but if he’s been sitting there a while, he can drop a second set, so you gotta do it twice
and don’t get pulled

if your s/d you can do sword 2 in to dodge well skill in teleport animation triggering all his trap with out taking a single hit.
Daggerstorm and Thieves Guild can also help…
Also don’t forget the Basilisk Venom is going to be unblockable and working with Venom Share. This should help to kill a Guard if you catch him off-guard.
But I’m afraid a Guardian keeps countering the Thief.
OK what I got from the replies (my thanks to you helpful people!) is that without changing my elite the thing to aim to do is to dodge through the traps BUT try to end the dodge outside of the trap’s ring.
Have tried this (quite successful, still need more practice) and so long as you then immediately avoid their pull (another dodge, sword 2 return, short bow 5 / 3) you can then wait for the traps to finish and then go to town.
But, as reikken said, you may well have to do it all again.
Conclusion is if there is something else I can usefully do, do that and don’t bother with the fat boy sat on his kitten traps!
The real problem with the DH’s traps is the continuos daze when they’re triggered, meaning that if you get caught you can’t even shadowstep outside with infiltrator’s return of IS.
You need to:
- Dodge the traps (starting and ending point of the dodge should be BOTH outside the traps area);
- Avoid the pull of Hunter’s Verdict (0.5 casting time)
- Stay at range until traps (especially Maw) are off and avoid DH’s huge longbow damage
- Look if he just lays a new set of traps (especially Maw, again) and in case if you’re caught inside you need to use Shadowstep to break stun outside, and remember to dodge again in order to get out of the 1200 range of Hunter’s Verdict if he didn’t use it before.
However, as you can see, for us thieves atm the DH is pretty much a hard counter, any half-decent DH will just wreck a thief sadly in 1v1, so in the end it’s best, especially if the DH is just camping a point, to go help your team with a +1 elsewhere.
GS DH with traps and JI, thief still needs some good raction, because it will be a telleport n’blend.
Dumb gameplay if u ask me but all classes have that kind of play, and gw2 is about that, best gimmicker wins.

u need to post a video of this.
Pretty sure teleports trigger traps… I also take massive damage

Yes you do take damage, same as taking burning stacks when crossing with a shadowstep ele’s ring of fire etc.

Oh sure i try get a video for you after work tomorrow i tested it on release of Hots.
Unless the DH is extremely new, there are so many things that need to happen for us to win, such as landing significant damage on the DH before they can setup on a spot where they can camp their traps, dodging into and right back out of each set of traps without getting hit by a single arrow, and having something to LoS behind to help wait out blocks and the aegis fragments. Once there’s a gap in their defensive utilities, we can win by trapping the DH in dazes and immobilize long enough to finish them through combining Impairing Daggers, Panic Strike, Mace Head Crack, and/or Impact Strike.
Basically, you have to avoid almost every combo they can land on you and eventually chain most of yours. This is easiest against newer DH players who are more likely to run more traps over defense, run berserker stats over marauder, miss their spear pull, and won’t know what Impairing Daggers is or what its casting animation looks like.

i was mistaken you take 2 hits
I mean, if you could dash through the traps you would most likely trigger them and evade the initial hits
The problem with all of this is that there still has to be a sizeable skill gap between the thief and DH to make this a reliable win for the thief.
The fact that traps can be placed and then the cooldown timers start means you have to remove them twice at least. And even then the re-use timers are short. They can hide in blocks or invulns while they come off cooldown.
And that is completely ignoring the sick ranged damage the DH gets from its bow.. Which knocks back as well.
In short, don’t bother, perhaps after the patch..
Proc his traps by dodging over the point he’s holding.
Check his animations to see if he’s putting down new, if he did, just dodge over the point again.
Just wait out the duration of the traps by making use of Line of Sight.
If the traps have worn of, you got a Trap DH who can’t do anything for ~10 seconds.
Just be careful on what attacks you use Dodges and/or Flanking Strike on.
After whacking him for ~10 seconds, start looking for those animations again where he puts down traps. If it’s one that hurts: Wait it out outside of his Line of Sight again.
It’s just a game of being patient.
Look for the proper opening and don’t let him pin you down, use Line of Sight to your advantage.
Shadow Step is pretty clutch for any fight involving a DH as well. However, S/D seems like it would be pretty tough to pull off. At least with D/P, you have a lot of shut down capabilities.
Either way, I’d honestly advocate avoiding this 1v1 regardless and only start focusing a DH once they’re engaged with someone else.
Pray that DH is dumb enough to chase/follow you. If he doesn’t do it after you dodged through traps, just give up and go somewhere else.
[Teef] guild :>
Try to lure them away from their traps. If you can’t, make sure their aegis is off first, then scorpion wire them to you. Only other options are ranged which is not great on thief or just run away.

Yea, you should actually never run scorpion wire. =P
This had some fun use in SkyHam, back in the day before the floor changes, but it’s really way too unreliable. Even if it didn’t bug out on you half the time, it’s a slow projectile that can miss, is easily dodged, and is vulnerable to any other anti-projectile hate.
A pure duel between you and a DH is the only situation I can think of using it and even then it’s still sketchy as hell.
It is one of the worst matchups for a thief outside of using P/P. Even with pistols the fight is pretty brutal. A summoned pet can actually be quite beneficial here either with thieves guild or something like Ogre runes.
