Do good Thieves use macros?
yeah i belive there is some kind of macro usage going around, or some people are pretty quick, they may be young too. back when i was a lot younger, 10 years ago or so i would be fighting people and they would joke that i have 3 hands or something because i would combo X and Y at the same time while doing something else that some people just could not execute. now that i am older i simply can not react as quick. may be people are just that quick

Don’t know about Clusterbomb, but Forward Withdraw should be easier than Mesmer’s Phase Retreat, since it’s not instant.
With some practice, the latter one can easily be done without macros. Lag obviously makes that impossible to pull off.
Just for reference: I trained phase retreat for about 3 hrs and whenever i felt like during normal gameplay afterwards. With enough training, it just feels natural after a while.
/edit: Needless to say, i still fail some times, because Phase Dashing demands you to press About Face ~0.25s before Phase Retreat and in the heat i sometimes mess that timing up. But i have seen Helseth fail at doing it, too, so that’s ok for me ^^

I can do Infiltrator’s Signet> Heartseeker > Steal> auto attack in quick succession, I don’t use Macros, but I have a Mechanical Keyboard – the rest is quick reflexes.
Withdraw isn’t too hard, you just need to control the camera in the right direction and position your character, it helps to have a steady framerate aswell.
Plays completely opposite professions to his main Teef.

Macros? No.
Custom key binds? Yes.

i honestly only play with marco if i am trying to find exact timing or test if somthing even possible. but if your asking if i use them in PVP/PvE/WvW ? no they are unreliable they do not factor your FPS / PING / MS delay can make you play worse then a beginner player.
Pretty sure you’re not allowed to use macros either.
it says your not allow to use marco " if a player is unable to do it in the game itself" all marco i test can be done in the game i have done them with out one. but it easier to practice if you know the timing your looking for.

Nah its the one button one action rule for ANET. So if the macro does more than one action from pressing only 1 key you’re technically breaking the rules.

Oh really ? that good to know thanks for clarifying that for me
How enforcing they are about this rule at less-to-non-competitive levels of play is uncertain.
Someone that’s doing a tournament certainly wouldn’t use macros, risking getting caught…
vs
Someone that plays casually…
I can see macros being useful in WvW situations, like having a macro for commander that types out “RALLY ON ME” in chat might be useful and not really harmful.
Always been curious on learning how (and if) keyboard macros are detected, and how they differ versus normal key presses. I assume one way to detect is the speed at which buttons are pressed, or the lack of delay between key presses.

That’s pretty easy. And I’ve been talking about the About Face Withdraw, which is faster than the manual turn Withdraw.
Using stuff like Cluster Bomb – Steal – Cluster Bomb for detonation is a lot trickier than just channeling HS with Steal which is… well, you just press buttons. That combo requires some insane timing in my experience, because you can easily miss with it, detonate it too high up, use two of them, fail to detonate it etc. And all of that depends on when you press CB the second time. I also find this technique essential, because it allows you to burst with Shortbow out, so I gotta find a way to master it and use it reliably.
Adjusted my keys for awesome gameplay. I use Shift as my auto attack. Lol skill2 as X,3=Y and so on.
You can have extra buttons on mice and gaming keypads as well that make what would seem impossible to do on a regular keyboard (without seriously tying up your fingers) pretty easy.

There is nothing in this game that requires a macro. On top of that macros are predictable, easy to dodge, and don’t allow any room for reacting to change – playing with macros will make you a worse player. If you’re having problems with doing certain things you can practice on golems in the mists. Also check your ping to make sure you don’t have connection issues that interfere with skill timings. The more you play the less you’ll think about timings and you will begin to focus on what the enemy is doing/trying to do. The game will become more like chess as you will do all of the abilities/timings from muscle memory with little thought.
Good luck, and have fun.
Turn up your camera rotation speed. when you get used to it, crank it up again. i find it much faster then using about face key, but it’s really just preference.
The rest is just timing. Give it time and you will eventually commit everything to muscle memory.
keep your daggers sharp friend.
Time to get good then. Thanks for the encouragement, my fellow thieving scum <3
Only custom key binds and mouse with 2 buttons hahaha.
Macro:
Necessity: NO but nice to have
All you need is practice and a low ping connection. I upgraded my internet connection and went from a ping of 400+ms to around 250ms+, the difference is huge especially when it comes to teleporting skills and weapon swap followed by executing a skill which wasn’t consistent or straight out failed on the higher ping.
I’m aware that this is against ToS, but some of the Thief’s maneuvers require insane accuracy and timing that is really hard to pull off with just your ol’ fingers.
No it’s not.
About Face – Withdraw – About Face just bugs out half of the time you do it manually. I saw some players do it saw quickly it’s incredible.
This doesn’t require a macro. All you have to do is change the key bind of your Withdraw to “E” and About Face to “R” and just press them in quick succession.
Cluster Bomb – Steal – Cluster Bomb either bugs out, shoots the bomb at your previous location or, if you press 2 too fast, will shoot another bomb and waste Initiative.
If your ping fluctuates you can just forget about using stuff like this.
It only bugs when you steal while the projectile is ascending, so you need to wait for it to descend before using your steal. The timing on this one requires you to practice and remember the distance when the projectile starts descending. With enough practice, this becomes second nature and you can combo them even during a zerg.
Do you simply need to practice out the kitten to do stuff like these or top players just secretly use macros and don’t give a kitten ?
It is hard to determine if players are using macro or not (only ArenaNet can tell), but you can accomplish those moves with practice and right key bindings.
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
imo using macros does more harm then good! this game is all about timing things right, a macro will use certain abilities with an exact time between them, that may cause you to spend more time then needed to perform the combo you have macroed, also latency may cause it to fail and cost you the fight.
I personally prefer to use my abilities exactly when i need them and not relie on a macro that can get me killed…
as for macroing stuff like using signets or poisons…. man how lazy can ppl be?! how hard is it to press 2-3 buttons side my side?
Just.. good keybinds. Macros are actually for bad players and they will cause more screw ups than just pressing hotkeys in order. Do it enough and your brain and fingers will create mental macros because of how fast you’ll be able to do it on your own.
