Does anyone run S/D D/P in WvW?
The extra initiative regeneration you have is absolutely pointless, all you need for reliable usage of the D/P combo is Infusion of Shadows, anything extra is just overkill, imo. You’re better off dropping those 10 points and picking up Hidden Killer from the Critical Strikes trait line, then ditching the two signets and replacing them with Shadow Step and Signet of Shadows or Blinding Powder (with Shadows Embrace, Blinding Powder acts like a stunbreaker).
Of course, if you’re uncomfortable not using the extra initiative regeneration, then by all means, your traits are solid (your armour is 100% glass cannon, but if that’s what you want, then whatever).
Oh, and to answer the title, yes, I used to run D/P + S/D in WvW, but recently swapped D/P to S/P for a bit of a change. You can basically use the exact same traits (x/30/30/x/x) for any direct damage weapon set combo on a Thief, it’s practically perfect, imo.
D/P + S/D is a very effective combo since you can basically shut down any boon class with S/D #3 and any other class with D/P #3 and #5 (as well as plenty of backstabs).
EDIT: I’d swap Thieves Guild for Basilisk Venom, and then drop all of the points in Acro and put them into DA for Mug, personally, but that just comes down to preference.
all is vain
Hello I ran s/d d/p combo in WvW for a very long time. I’ve recently switched to either s/p d/p like Incurafy or sometimes I use s/d d/d.
I run with the gear set up that wish outlined in his ‘building a better d/d’ thread and I love it! It’s an optimized mix of zerk/soldiers.
I found that d/p and s/d pair extremely well together, especially considering that tactical strike doesn’t have it’s daze duration reduced in wvw. This means that with a sigil of paralyzation on the sword you can match dazed and revealed very well. Between these two sets you have utility to deal with any number of situations. I run 10/30/30 with this setup. Like I said, since tactical strike has a higher daze duration, you actually benefit from CnD→Tact Strike and can use that in addition to #3 on the set. I run with DS: III, CS: III, VI, XI (or XII sometimes) and SA: IV, VI, XI.
For utils, I use Withdraw or Heal in Shadows depending, Shadow Step, Shadow Refuge, and either Blinding Powder or Sig of Agility. Basilisk as elite.
When I want to take a camp, I unequip the dagger offhand from sword and use s/p and switch to sig of malice and daggerstorm. If you pull right you can take the camp in around 30 seconds.
Cheers!
soloQing my way through leagues…
Yea, you lose a lot of damage without those last two talents in CS. Dropping the extra 10 in Acro for this will probably suit you better, especially since you already have 4 dodges from Sig of Agi. With the blind field of pistol #5, you shouldn’t be needing to dodge as much anyways.
Also, if you take the 30 point CS talent Hidden Killer, you can easily switch your main armor (head, shoulders, chest, hands, legs, boots) to Valkyrie, which will give you a lot of staying power while still being able to hit like a truck with your backstabs.
Oh yea, I also agree with Ashin that S/P with Daggerstorm is excellent for solo capping camps. Daggerstorm is great against the thief/scout NPCs and the blind/stunlock from S/P allows you to just face-tank all the other enemies.
Hey guys, this has all been super helpful! I think I’m going to try the 10/30/30 build with Wish’s gear (I already have it!). Can you share some tips on playstyle and matchups vs. the different classes?
How do you play against Mesmers, Necros, Stun Warriors, and other Thieves (D/D, D/P, S/D)? Do you use one set the entire fight, or do you swap midway through (for example start with S/D and then swap to D/P to burst them down.
