Ok, i need some help right now.

i have a level 45 thief i have played alot recently. My main is a necro which i have played over 700 hours on and i love it, but wanted to try out thief and is it quite fun.

My problem is, with having a bunker necro with 31k health aswell as a tanky warrior, i dont like the “squishyness” of the thief. i know for a fact that i can survive almost everything in PvE (Stealth and perfect dodge). But i am mostly a WvW player since PvE endgame isnt all to great.

I tried my thief in WvW (Level 40 gear) and i kept getting 2-3 hitted and i couldnt do kitten. I know for a fact it WILL get better when i get to 80 with level 80 gear. (no, i am not going to run full glass cannon, but i will run around 50% crit damage with valkyrie gear i think, so kind of glass cannon)

But, will a level 80 thief survive in WvW? I mean, i don’t want to get like 3 hitted on 80 aswell. I am talking zerg fights or like small group fights. I know i wont survive D/D in zergs, but hey!

Also, thief looks like so much fun while roaming. Getting those nasty backstabs etc.

I would also like to say, i might use my necro for Zerging, and Thief for roaming with my brother. So, thief is pretty good for 2v2 and 1v1’s right?

So… Should i get my thief to 80 and try it out, or is it no point? Will i be able to survive in WvW alot better at 80?

the only thing thief is good for, is trolling the wvw players via roaming (1vs1 surprise attacks)
glass builds+stealth= win or withdraw

what you see is what you get

Thats kind of what i think aswell. And it does look like fun to roam and surprise someone with a 5k backstab or something. And use like a perma stealth build and keep like 10 players busy. I have seen that happen alot. Well, its going to get nerfed most likely, but still

Thief is pretty good at small scale engagements, and at harassing yaks and supply camps. If you run shortbow secondary you can be sort of effective in zergs (aoe to tag people, blast finishers on demand).

You’ll be able to survive in WvW once you’re 80 with better gear, a tighter build, and a better grasp of the play style. I can usually go hours without dying (unless my internet dies).

You have no idea what you’re talking about, quit exaggerating.

OP: Getting your Thief to 80 is definitely worth it and is a lot of fun. You won’t be too useful in zergs compared to any other class but roaming and small skirmishes are our strong points.

For your build, go valkyrie armour and zerker weapons/trinkets with 10/30/30/0/0 or 0/30/30/10/0 with Hidden Killer etc and S/D + SB or D/D + SB and you’ll have the time of your life.

Thief is probably one of the worst classes in WvW in that they are extremely squishy even with a full PTV set. With zerker, you can do some damage, but you will die so fast you probably won’t even get a shot off. I wouldn’t even bother using my thief for WvW zergs.

For 1v1s and 1vX encounters they perform very well though. I’d like to say it has the advantage in a 1v1 over most classes(excluding mesmers, guardians, and d/d eles) and they also possess the ability to escape most situations.

tl;dr

Get your thief to 80 if you plan on roaming. If you plan on zerging, not worth the sweat and tears.

doomdesire is right. thief is bad in wvw unless u just roam for 1 v 1s :P which is fun but not helping your server/guild. PTV is horrible set for a thief but also his point is it wont matter your armor or build ur always squishy. if you like to do small battles and solo camps or stuff like that and teleport alot sure thief is fun . but dont expect to mix it up in a battle of 5v 5 or higher and expect to do well with all the incidental dmg from AOE and being near others. :P

If you just aim to be roaming paired with your brother, you might want to look into combination teams. A thief doesn’t help a lot of people, it’s a solo class with solo skills. A team of a Mesmer and a Guardian is lethal though, the mesmer can do its massive damage while the Guardian plays around with the enemies and gives group buffing and healing. Or, a Guardian and Engineer. Or a Ranger and Mesmer. There is a lot out there that works, but thief has little place in them.

Active: Mesmer, Warrior
Inactive: Guardian, Elementalist, Ranger, Thief (ex-main)
Leveling: Engineer, Necromancer

Thief is ok if you want to solo camps or kill isolated targets. It’s decent in small skirmishes.

Generally i use my necro for zerg fights + small skirmishes and my thief if i want to troll mainly, or capture some camps.

Best thing with thieves is that you will almost never die when you get familiar with it.

It’s not my fault if S/P is not popular !!!

OP, a balanced thief will have ~100 crit damage for x2.5 multiplier on crits. You can get 2.5-2.6k armor and 15-16k hp with that. Thief’s defense is dodge, evade, blind, and stealth; it’s all active on your part. You can’t play a thief like your other characters, but once you learn your limitations you can have a lot of fun. Get used to using shortbow though… it’s clutch in most builds. No need for perma stealth when you’re always faster than your opponents.

Anyways, if you can put the time in to learn the class I’d recommend taking it to 80. Besides killing newbs I’d claim that thief takes a lot more to learn than say mesmer or elementalist.

Edit:
I forgot, if you feel squishy while leveling (I know I did) try running pistol main / dagger offhand. Stack condition damage and precast caltrops then steal as it activates. Once you learn the class better the power builds become better imo.

I run d/d + sb or d/p + sb in WvW. Keep your head on a swivel and be fast with SB # 5 as well as shadow step and you’ll never die. As an added benefit you can land those backstabs you’re looking for

Yea, i am on level 52 ATM. Trying to get used to different weaponsets. I do pretty good in PvE. I can solo like 3-4 mobs thats 5 levels higher than me. The dogding aint a problem. Im just trying to find a weapon set i like. D/D seems like the one for me ATM. I have already realised that if i fail a dodge/stealth im dead… I kind of like it. Its kind of a win or loose situation
