Explain this please..
How high is your Toughness/Vitality? Because by the looks of the screenshot, you’re a glass cannon with no defence who was hit by a glass cannon Backstab Thief.
It’s your own fault for having absolutely no Toughness.
EDIT: Oh, and you’re a Necro, so you’re a light armour user with no Toughness… that’s even worse.
all is vain
Just esplain the damage, i usally don’t get oneshotted by other classes, even warriors can’t shot me like that.

I already explained the damage to you, so unless you’re completely unaware of what a glass cannon is and don’t know how Toughness works, I really can’t explain it much better.
EDIT: Also, you weren’t oneshotted, you took 2 backstabs, a Heartseeker, and 2 hits from the auto-attack chain. This all means that the fight went on for at LEAST 6-10 seconds.
all is vain
it is written: backstab 19k / 2 hits.
just read.
My bad. But, with right build and some might (or invu in enemy), you can do 10k+ in BS (vs toughnessless).
Did a Guardian just give him 12 stacks of might? Did a Warrior just cut you down to 15% vulnerability? Too many factors we don’t know to answer.
I think he just got lucky and got all crits. I roll 25/30/0/0/15, and I have seen close to those numbers on individual abilities, but rarely all at once. Also the Backstab and Steal damage seems a little high, I’m thinking he might have had some boons from an outside source.
2 hits, 19k BS. What’s abnormal for you?
“Usual thieves doesn’t deal all that damage”. Sometimes I got Empower (by Guardian), and my BS increased a lot damage. Can be this.
Yeah, considering i had a Protection Buff (-33% incoming damage) after the DeathShroud makes more sense with it.
We were alone, far from the big fight, so i’d not consider the Warrior or Guardian situation.
By the way, i appreciate the positive feedback.

You still haven’t said how much Toughness you had. The fact that you had 24k HP on a Necro doesn’t mean much, and just makes me think you have absolutely no Toughness on your build.
Also, you practically ignored my previous post. You weren’t one shotted, you were killed after 5 hits that would have taken 6-10 seconds to dish out at the very least; what were you doing during those 6-10 seconds?
I’m sorry if I don’t sound like I’m taking you seriously, but it’s pretty hard to when there’s a complete lack of information and you haven’t even told us about your build.
all is vain
Ah, now I am the one under inquisition, nice.
The fact i didn’t wrote or quote something about you doesn’t mean I ignored you.
And I write it again: “I’m not dumb”, I can read informations from your posts, from my screenshots and understand them clearly.
If I wrote “Oneshotted” it was to make you understand the quickness of the fight; it lasted just few seconds, during which i was wasting my defensive cooldowns to avoid being killed, obviously.
Yeah I agree it’s hard to understand the situation, that’s why i’m here to ask Thieves’ opinion, next time ’m gonna check the Combat Log if possible or hope to have Fraps up.
I was running around in a “glass” cannon powerbuild, with around 900+ thoughness, full Divinity set, 22k-24k hps.
I’m not a newbye, as i wrote i met more skilled thieves and since now i hadn’t seen that kind of damage; even if i’m a glass cannon necro, i still can’t be bursted down that fast by most of the players i usually met (i wouldn’t be here asking if i knew those kinda damage were often to be found in pvp).
EDIT: More details about my build; as i wrote, i hadn’t Plague as Elite, iw as running with Flesh Golem; I haveSoul Reaping Traits that gives me Protection when falling under 50% Hps; i have Spectral Armor as utility and i brought no points into Death Magic (no additional Toughness).

I always love this how much toughness did you have counter question.
Like the kitten (I actually wrote kitten) system, the Thief subsection should scan for ‘how much toughness do you you have’ kind of lines, and add another one like: ‘thiefs are the only class allowed to run zerger amulett, you must have toughness’.
Meh, I backstabbed a Rabbit for 400K+ damage once… not impressed :P (just to get the 300k damage achievement hehe, I don’t like backstab builds, too easy to counter).
On a serious note, there are some kind of factors here, like for example he bringing all the Might traits he could (on dodge on stealth, on signet, on steal and on venom application), plus Assassin Signet, as well as some of the +10% damage (2 of those if he had might on stealth, 3 of them if not: on conditioned enemy, on dodge bar not full, on initiative over 6, or the 1% per initiative point).
Obviously a full zerker getting very lucky on criticals, with runes making him do even more damage (probably combining Eagle rune with Executioner trait for +25% damage once your health dropped under 50%), probably using most of the effects I mentioned, probably using Vulnerability in you too.
I can’t confirm anything (that’s the reason behind all those “probably”), but I guess it was something under those lines.
Aitionally, if that Thief was 100% centered on increasing the damage, then he wasn’t helping the team at all. I’ve found some very dangerous Thieves, but most times they were sitting in one place waiting for you to be at 1200 range to start their killing combo. This means they’re wasting a lot of time on waiting for someone to kill, and that they can’t go into big fights without dying horribly, which at the end means they won’t help the team and they won’t get many points (Killing alone gives you very little points in PVP).

I don’t understand the argument of “thief is the only class allowed to use a berserker amulet” as an actual reason for thief being OP.
If it’s in the game, it’s supposed to be used. Nerfing every class so that they don’t use it is an absolutely ridiculous way to back up your point. They might as well just remove the item from the game.
Thief also isn’t the only one who uses it, by the way.
As stated in the previous posts, you were hit by Backstab twice. 19k damage against base toughness with possible stacks of Might, scholar rune, etc. (so many different ways to boost the damage on one ability) could easily lead up to around 9k per hit.

Earlier in WvW a thief jumped me in the battle field, popped Haste, and literally full healthed me and dropped a finishing move in the span of 4 seconds then vanished and ran away when there was 20 other people around me. I was completely shocked as I have never been killed that fast by any class in game, even Warriors.
I have 3182 armor and had 17.2k hp at the time. I wish I was running fraps because I was rooted and my health bar just dropped 100% to 0% in mere seconds before I could even react.
This (and Warriors) is really starting to ruin PvP for me with the ridiculous amount of damage being dumped out. There should be 0 reason why any class should hit even over 3.5k physical attacks on builds stacked high on armor.

Today I was on my thief without my glass cannon setup and this guy with what look like 3182 armor and 17.2k hp was there , I just couldn’t do anything to him for over 2 minutes as he was just soaking up my regular damage and healin up everytime I started doing some decent amount of dmg, these tanks are ruining PvP for me ( and warriors)

You are “under inquisition” because you provided sweet stuff all amount of information in your opening post. You were given a response, weren’t satisfied, and then kept on going without acknowledging or attempting to understand the reply. In addition, you’ve acted rude and ignorant the entire thread, so it’s no wonder that you’re now getting a taste of your own medicine in return.
I was running around in a “glass” cannon powerbuild, with around 900+ thoughness, full Divinity set, 22k-24k hps.
Well there’s the complete answer to your question. You had no toughness at all (900 tougness is the base toughness at level 80) and were hit by a burst Thief who put every trait, rune, sigil and utility at their disposal into getting the maximum amount of damage they could on you in just a few hits. Since you were unable to counter them by outplaying them in the nearly 10 seconds that you had, you should have been able to rely on your defence to help mitigate the damage; instead you were running a glass cannon build and therefore took the full brunt of his burst.
What on earth did you expect when you’re running a glass cannon build? Do you understand that the “glass” part of that comes from the fact that you’re extremely squishy and can die in an instant? Or did that escape you completely?
I’m not a newbye, as i wrote i met more skilled thieves and since now i hadn’t seen that kind of damage; even if i’m a glass cannon necro, i still can’t be bursted down that fast by most of the players i usually met (i wouldn’t be here asking if i knew those kinda damage were often to be found in pvp).
I’m sorry, but if you were running a glass cannon build, got killed by another glass cannon build, and then have the nerve to come onto the forums to complain about it, then yes, you are a newbie. If this is your first time encountering the Backstab build in the 2+ months that it has been around then it just goes to show how little you really do PvP. Also, to say that you’ve never met another class that can do that kind of damage is just laughable… Warriors, Engineers and Mesmers all have burst builds that can do just as much damage in just as short a time (and to be honest with you, the Thief who killed you did it in twice the time that it should have taken).
I always love this how much toughness did you have counter question.

That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. The reason that “how much toughness did you have?” is the most commonly asked question on any QQ thread is because it’s the most relevant question that will counter almost everything the OP has usually said.
Toughness is the direct damage reduction stat in the game. If you don’t want to take high direct damage hits, then you need to have some sort of Toughness to counter direct damage and burst builds.
As for the “only Thieves can wear berzerker gear” thing, LOL. I wear a Berserker amulet on my balanced Sword/Dagger build with 20 in the Toughness trait line, so don’t act like we’re saying only glass cannon Thieves are allowed to wear it.

im goign to try to post something constructive as a backstab thief myself. I do lots of tpvp. I have found the biggest thing the top necros do is they get into a nice position where they can be protected by teammates. This means thinking before hand on where is optimally the longest route for the thief to take to actual start opening up on me and which the necro can do full dmg to the other team. This will not always save you but it will give you the best chance. Another thing is to pop your defences early. A thief’s dmg will decrease heavily over the course of a fight and as he gets focused himself. These are just some things to try to help you, you may know them already but I do not know what you do or not know already. GLHF

Eduardo said it all.
Taking two backstabs in the back from same thief in one fight is totally unforgivable, if you talk about tournaments.
1st of all thiefs is not op …
2nd of all 2 back stabs ? you kidding me right ? its your own fault you get kille you didn’t pay attention
3 of all if you think thief is op you never saw totally pro guardian with proper build on spvp
It is simple. Lucky with crits. It happens. I have been downed by warriors and messers in seconds due to a string of crits also. Sometimes you just get unlucky. When I was running a combination of zerker and ravenger gear I routinely took necros and all other classes down while they tried to defend themselves.
Funny thing is that when thieves run with that kind of gear we can die walking through a red circle. We have nothing in the defensive department. Everything slaughters us when we roll in that gear.
I have smacked Necros for 25k+ plus with a 100b+ eviserate combo, necros must love running no toughness builds and the rifle if you start with frenzy>killshot and follow up with volley will kill you pretty quickly,
Never in my time playing in Spvp/Tpvp with the backstab build have I seen a 9k hit with heartseeker… infact I have never seen such in wvw with 114% crit damage.

Hello,
There is already a thread to discuss about the thief in this forum : The thief and its gameplay – Your feedback, therefore this one is now locked.
