Feedback on the recent short bow change:
the change wouldn’t be so bad if SB wasn’t our only vaguely reliable ranged attack, since P/P’s still the redheaded stepchild
But like I said in another post I’m also upset with the change. SB never left my weapons lineup but I guess I’ll have to go S/D D/P because apparently those are the only builds that aren’t utter garbage

There are very glaring, widespread issues with the way ranged autoattacks work in this game in general. Most of them have both too slow of an attack rate AND too slow of a projectile speed for the amount of damage they do. This combined with a lack of homing totally breaks a weapon and makes it nearly unusable in high-level play. This is currently affecting Pistols, Longbows, Staffs, and Scepters across professions. Notably, Rifles are not particularly affected.
This actually hits Thieves harder than it does other classes, and the reason why is obvious. The #1 skill is the only free source of DPS, while everything else shares a resource. This means that all Thief weapons need to be configured in such a way where the #1 skill supplies a significant portion of the total potential DPS, which can then be supplemented tactically by the #2-5 skills.
This is largely why P/P is broken. SB was already in the same boat, the only reason people didn’t notice is that Cluster Bomb is really good while Body Shot is awful.

*staves :P srry cant help myself. but i do wanna add that you are 100% on the money with this post. no point in even suggesting HOW to fix it. just suggesting is all we can do bc anet makes wierd kitten decisions :P (srry i refuse to say kitten as it has so many meanings)

The OED actually has “Staffs”. I researched that a while back and came to the conclusion that they were both correct. Staves is technically the plural form of Stave while Staffs is the plural for of Staff, but the two terms are largely interchangeable so ends up not really mattering
What always drove me up the wall was blizzard’s insistence that “shaman” was plural for “shaman”. It follows standard English rules and the correct plural is ‘shamans’.
I still don’t understand this at all…
You don’t see Rangers complaining anymore about longbow or shortbow missing. Both have the same projectile speed as the Thief’s shortbow. They have longer range which means an increased chance of missing.
You guys are making too much of this issue.
If you want to complain about something, complain about how evasive shot doesn’t actually leap backwards 1/3rd of the time.

Well, not exactly.
a.) Crossfire has a much, much faster attack speed than Trick Shot without being much weaker. This is a key difference.
b.) Long Range Shot is as broken as Trick Shot, and people complain endlessly about the Longbow, they just often aren’t bright enough to realize that Long Range Shot is the biggest actual problem with the Longbow.

People aren’t complaining about the rate of fire though. they’re complaining about the projectile speed. The rate of fire hasn’t changed. And you’re right, shortbow for ranger does shoot about twice as fast. It also doesn’t bounce between 3 targets though and doesn’t need a trait to do it.
And people complain about the longbow’s damage, not it missing. It makes no sense for the longbow to actually do less damage than a shortbow at shorter range. It missing has more to do with the 1500+ effective range it has. Shortbow is about half that.
You dont use Longbow auto attack on short range, since its scaled with range – thats why people dont complain. Longbow is prone to missing, but it has 1500 range and MASSIVE damage for that (probably the strongest auto attack) – so its great for nuking targets in WvW from max range, there are plenty of opportunities. If you fight target 1on1 you dont use it anyway since it does crap damage in short range and Rapid Fire is your main tool.
Ranger Shortbow is just fine, no real problems with its projectile speed/missing.
Ranger Axe is equivalent of Thiefs Shortbow, and its projectile is SLOWER than short bow, but it still is homing (well, would be pretty much impossible to hit with it if it werent)
Theres also Necomancer Axe which is kinda a ranged weapon too, though shorter range.
That said, as “ranged” weapon Shortbow is meh anyway – its main purpose is cluster bomb, poison field and infiltrator arrow. You dont fight other ranged class with Trick Shot, no chances. Its just there to DPS enemies if they dont pay attention to you.
Even in current state its still better than Pistols though. Main problem i have atm is WvW lags, where not just most skills are laggy and impossible to use – now even our ranged auto attack is pretty much disabled.
i am sorry a-net, you are not worth my time or money for this patch
(i wanted to repay with 10 euro gem purchase for the patch effort, but frankly i am a bit tired of backstabbing us at every patch, i was ok with the mug nerf since we had it incoming and had a small compensation in return but this….)
maybe if thief population dropped by 25%, then you would care ?
thief is my main job and i been playing it since day 1
SB was the only thief weapon that made sense to me as 4 of 5 skills were related to each other unlike other sets for thief which have mixed useless skill on them
even though SB is under powered it never left my secondary set it was the only thing weapon i can use in big WvW zergs 60+ vs 60+ and even in small zergs and now that i cannot hit anything with skill #1
unless the target is downed or dead runied WvW for me.
the fact that u can dodge it without trying is insane and comparing it
to guardians scepter is wrong.
the scepter is bad too but the attack will hit if another target got on the orb way and it will hit for more base dmg while SB 1 if it doesn’t hit the targeted player it could go through line of ppl without hitting too
this nerf made my thief like engi and necro parked on a dragon spawn only to be used once every few days for group event daily.
“i know there are more sets for thief and alot are great but SB is key weapon on my thief and my playstyle and since i have other jobs it is more efficient for me now to use them for large groups and GvG”
As someone who mains a ranger, welcome to the club.
Sure our shortbow isn’t in all that bad of a state but the reason for that is how fast the auto attack is. I don’t mean projectile speed, I mean the cycle rate.
You want to avoid the damage of ranged attacks? Then you should have to do the same thing you would do for melee. Dodge rolls and evades.
OK, so shooting into a pack of 30+ enemies in Wv3 and not hitting any with Trick Shot, despite having someone targeted and in range… and not hitting anyone…
That’s just not right.
If an enemy is targeted, in range, and not dodging Trick Shot really ought to hit.
they have secretly removed the combined shortbow thread and added distractions (such as anti-stealth trap) so we’d forget about the shortbow nerf?
