Got the game Today...decided on Thief
You will end having enough skill points to unlock all the skills.
There is some consolidated builds like the backstab, the death blossom spam and the pistol/dagger stealth.
You can use a build calculator to elaborate builds and then test it on the Mists.
Welcome.
I think you need to unlock all skills in one group (tier) before you can move on to the next.
Skills for weapons are unlocked by equipping the weapon and fighting with it and although D/D and P/P solid choices are I’d recommend trying out all weapon combinations you can make and unlock their skills.
Don’t worry about builds yet, spend skill points, and later on trait points, as seems best, or the most fun. Don’t by too much gear, live from the land, you level up and outgrow your gear quickly. Follow the story and the hearts ans any event that crosses your path and enjoy.
If you decide to go D/D and then P/D for ranged, you only need to buy 2 daggers, as you can keep the offhand empty on your second weapon set and it will use your first set’s off hand.
Stack condition damage and Death Blossom to drop stacks of mobs with relative ease. Put 10 points into the bottom Trait tree for the caltrops on dodge so you can easily kite everything between blossoms.
you can keep the offhand empty on your second weapon set and it will use your first set’s off hand.
TIL, thanks! I remember wondering why with one weapon I still had a full offhand but brushed it off and never put this together. Would work well for a S/D – D/D build as well.
Helpful tips for leveling;
S/P Pistol Whip has Evasion during the animation. This means you won’t get hit while you’re swinging your sword around. PW also hits multiple targets in front of you. Good ability to help you stay alive and level quickly. Initiative intensive but 15 points in Critical Strikes traits and Precision gear works well. Signet of Malice healing is nice here also.
D/D Deathblossom also has evasion. It will apply bleed to up to 4 targets. Another good ability here but again it uses a lot of initiative. Increasing Condition Duration is very helpful here for ‘damage per initiative’.
Stealth is a tool for dropping aggro and escape, also good for Backstabs Blinding Powder and Shadow Refuge are most always on my bar.
We are squishy.. Learn to dodge. Putting 15 points in the Acrobatics trait line is very helpful.
Try all the weapon combinations, the two I listed are a bit easier and give you a bit more survivability. Each weapon loadout is viable, just depends on what you want to play and how you want to spec.

Thanks for the replies peeps.
I will be trying all the weapon combinations I can……I tried out the shortbow last night and like that. The Infiltrator arrow is nice for closing the gap pretty quick and has some AOE moves as well as the ability to combo. which was nice.

That might be good, but if you get another dagger/offhand you could always put secondary sigils in it to make it much better like a sigil of corruption or sigil of energy etc
