Hey all!
I’ve been working on a profession guide for some time now and it is ready to be published.
Keep in mind that it is mainly written for newer Thief players.

Love the guide. I’m a semi-new thief player and I’ve been dabbling with solo running dungeons and fractals and you’re guide helped, a lot.

Once small personal criticism I have is the disregard you show P/P. Though certainly not the meta in PvP I’m finding it very useful and fun in PvE. The survivability it offers through IP is crazy for soloing content.

As I am reading through it, it is really greatly done so far.
Good job, really. The design is nice and clever, too.
I’ll go try to read through it all, it never hurts to recap.
Once again, huge “Thumbs up” for this great work of yours.

EDIT: In my opinion, in the section about current D/P Meta, it would be worth mentioning the importance or rather benefits of sharing the Basilisk Venom with your team before the match starts. And why is it prefered over Impact Strike.
Also, about the alternate builds the so called “Vault Spammer” build would be worth of mentioning, too. It is rather simple, but can dominate 1v1s and team fights as well even in higher tier plays, so it would be an interesting choice for Thieves looking to learn something more about such builds.
About the PvE Written Rotations, some thieves I met were a little confused about them, just because they did not understand why exactly those steps why not different ones and why Evade for no reason. So, it might be of use to mention that those rotations you mentioned are performed in that way to keep up nonstop maximum number of Lead Attacks points to be constantly buffed and that Evades are used for the same reason, 10% dmg buff, apart of dealing damage on their own of course.

I can’t say enough about the professionalism that went into the layout, ease of reading, and time it took to put it all together.

What a great guide! Thanks for posting this for all of us. I like the detailed sections on pve and pvp. The Stolen Abilities chart is helpful as well. The detailed guides for fractals and dungeons are also very helpful. I also like how you’ve included pictures. It’s always interesting to see how others develop their thieves appearance wise. My go-to references are usually the guides posted at dulfy.net, which are great but seem to be short on theory (overall discussion) and heavy on definition.

Thief is a unique beast. It’s my sole profession that I play as I’ve promised myself to only play regularly a single character on GW2. Sometimes I get frustrated with the sometimes ‘squishiness’ of thieves but overall, they are a fun profession game-play and lore wise. It definitely is a profession that keeps you on your toes; requiring agility and fast thinking in tricky situations.

Like Lobo says, P/P is viable and fun in certain situations. I’ve found that I like to pull out my pistols during pve or world bosses. The advantage that I’ve found with P/P over shortbows is that P/P doesn’t have the arrow bounce trait that can get you in trouble when dealing with tightly packed areas or when you’re trying to minimize enemy aggro. Plus dual wielding pistols just looks great.

I still have so much to learn concerning thieves (pvp, raids). You’re guide will help me along that path.

As a returning player hyped by the new extension, I was hesitating between going back to my revenant or to my thief because the futur spec of both of this class looks cool.
But to be honest I played revenant in the past just because I was tired to die on the HoT maps because thief are squishy. But your guide really help me to get back to my thief and not be lost with new meta.
This guide give me motivation for trying to master the class.
But I just have a question, I plan to do mostly PVE because of the extension so do you have any advice to improve survivability.
And do you think it’s better to get some defensive stats or go zerk and work on dodging and using skill with blind.

Thank you for this amazing work and sorry if my English is not very good but I’m from France

The main thing I was looking for was surviving the HoT overworld, tbh. I’m a new player, and everything in the expansion tends to murder me, a completely different experience from leveling to 80, which was cake.

What I had envisioned when I started playing was be that, if I became good enough at learning when to dodge, interrupt, etc., I could solo more difficult and/or long PvE fights that are normally able to be soloed by warriors/necros/etc. Is this true, or am I ultimately fated to be a glass cannon with limited defensive measures?

If you play Staff Daredevil with proper stats, then you can solo lots of stuff. I soloed every story, including HoT, and never had real problems with HoT mobs while still having huge damage and up time.
But just to be sure I have to mention: No build or skill will allow you to solo far too great amounts of enemies, solo dungeons or any such things, unless you exploit them, skip them, etc.
Know your limits, kite, don’t expect to be invincible, especialy not as a Thief.

Seems nice but I’m surprised my Fervent Malice build (which was more theory crafting alternative roles for a thief) made it in while my actual build (P/D conditions) which has admittedly changed since I last updated my build videos, did not.

I made it to platinum last pvp season running P/D so I think I’m justified in calling it viable. Offhand shortbow on a condi build applies cleave etc.

For the second weapon, on both the staff build and the dagger/dagger build, can you use whatever you want?

I plan to do mostly PVE because of the extension so do you have any advice to improve survivability.
And do you think it’s better to get some defensive stats or go zerk and work on dodging and using skill with blind.

In regards to survivability and solo-ing: If you guys have trouble staying alive on Berserker’s, I’d suggest taking a look at IP (Grandmaster in CS). It gives a solid sustain, and combined with SoM and food that heals on crit (Omnomberry Pie for example) you will be able to survive most encounter without a problem. (for perspective: IP+SoM heals you more than Retaliation dmg) If you have trouble with timing evades you could also try out S/P, #3 is an excellent trash clearing ability. It used to be the go to set for such cases before HoT came out.
I’d argue that Thief is an excellent solo profession, DrD especially. Most PvE content is solo-able by us, you just have to practise enough.

Seems nice but I’m surprised my Fervent Malice build (which was more theory crafting alternative roles for a thief) made it in while my actual build (P/D conditions) which has admittedly changed since I last updated my build videos, did not.

The build section which deviate from the meta was purposefully made to feature odd builds. I liked your Fervent Malice and played around with it a lot after you made the initial post. You can see the alterations and the reasoning behind them on that original post.
The Handbook does not contain all the viable builds, I believe your P/D is wokring, I also played many different builds over the last year. It’s merely a highlight of how far you can go from the meta and still make a build that works.

For the second weapon, on both the staff build and the dagger/dagger build, can you use whatever you want?

D/- + -/D stands for equipping one dagger in one weapon set, and another in the other. So if you look at your equipment tab, you’ll see one weapon in each set. Because the two weapons are in dif hands, the game will use a D/D set, and when you swap, it will stay D/D. (Its like you have 4 daggers, but due to this feature in the game, you only need two daggers for it). It is made like this so you benefit from the on-swap effects. (Here: Initiative on weapon swap)
The staff build has an open slot on the second weapon set, ideally you would never swap to it in raids. (Note that some ppl use D/P in case they need an emergency cc to break a boss, but under normal circumstances you dont need that)
