Guide to Thief Guides
Would like to add my newly created “Venom share tank” build. Crazy high survivability and great group utility (possibly the strongest sPvP build I’ve ever run).
PvP:
Same traits with 5x soldier and 1x guardian rune, stacking crit sigil on all weapons, and Soldier’s amulet socketed with knight’s jewel.Adding now.
Technically it’s a direct damage build, no condition damage. The venom sharing is primarily for CC purposes.
Oh, alright, I’ll go change that.
Thief can’t join the PvE world right now!!!!!!!!!!!
Thief can’t join the PvE world right now!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah m8 trust me when I say that that is in no way the case, thieves are completely PvE-viable.
ANet please sticky this for the benefit of the entire thief community.

Keep forgetting to bump this thread. Will probably quit Guild Wars 2 soon but I will try and help you out with whatever you need.
Hope you doing good and keep up the good work.
This thread… Shall be risen!
Of course, I’ll keep this thread updated. It’ll help if ANet could sticky this, though. Might go and ask them directly right now, actually.
Anyhow, thank you.

Lol, I noticed you didn’t add any utilities or weapons to this build. c; However, if I had to guess, it would be a D/D burst thief with SB secondary, runs HiS, and has the utilities Shadowstep, Last Refuge, and Blinding Powder (? I just use this as a placeholder for whatever actually belongs there. It’s just a safe option, IMHO). Elite = Basilisk Venom.
To me, looks like your idea is to have a bursty D/D thief that has more evades than the regular setup. Like the idea, although I’m not sure how the setup will work given to D/D’s reliance on stealth. :/ either way, don’t have the time right now; I’ll use it tomorrow, and tell you how I like it.
Thank you.
EDIT: oh, here’s the version with the weapons and utilities added, by the way.

Thanks c: indeed, hoping to draw contributions from all over the community. So far, we’ve had a small but very awesome group of thieves come together to help with this although it seems like Authority and I are the main people keeping this thread alive. But thank you for this; I would really like to see more people drop their build by, or something like that. c:
What will it take for this thread to get tagged so I don’t have to hunt this thing down every time I want to check out a thief build…
I’ll try and keep bumping, I tried to make a few threads that were helpful, but kitten get’s pushed to the bottom and we have no mod interaction to throw some stickies around! :/

Mainly what you are looking for are Mug (part of burst), Preparedness(3ini), Lead Attacks(%damage/initiative), Executioner(20%damage/enemy hp<50%). Most major traits are open, aside from the mug and Exe, though flanking strikes (5%damage side/back) are nice to add onto the +% damage.
I use it with dagger/dagger, or dagger/pistol, and sword/dagger. Sigil of Intelligence on mainhand dagger, force offhand pistol/dagger (You always keep a shortbow in inventory, right?).
Utilities I normally take with it are Shadowstep, Shadow Refuge(changed unless in a lot of fights with zergs/larger groups), trops (control, +300 condition damage and they tick in the 50’s, not what I’m using it for), Sig of Agi (clutch condition removal/energy), or Infiltrator’s signet(stunbreaker/ini(damage) recovery). It’s a really pretty open spec. Elite – they all have their uses. I downed a warrior trying to rifle me the other day with DS. got him to 50% with it, mugged him mid DS, and he was down.
Basalisk will help solidify your burst on weak targets, and thieves guild is generally gonna help more versus bunkers (more pressure).
I almost live with withdraw as a heal these days, but SoM isn’t totally wasted (and can pick up signet synergy with spec), and HiS is an obvious favorite from the lack of condition removal in this spec.
Really get whatever sigils / runes you’re comfortable with, I mainly just use beryl/ruby orbs (Lyssa runes are too expensive for me atm, or I’d run those with Basalisk Venom). Armor is a mix of zerker and Valkyrie. It sits 3k+ power, 40-44% crit (sheet, not with traits/sigils added in), and 98-101 crit damage. 15-17khp depending on realm bonuses. I keep some knight’s jewelry when I feel I need to beef up some more(and some cleric’s and knights armor, but hell, half my inventory is permanently gear).
You’re mainly wanting to avoid using initiative because it makes you hurt things, a lot.
Between swords control, and dagger’s burst (sigil of intelligence = 1 free crit after you switch weapons – ghetto hidden killer anyone? And int sigils are CHEAP), you can easily 1v1 as long as you don’t get dropped on not paying attention. The second someone hits 50% is generally a good time to try and setup a burst. Tac strikes and steal/poison combos help versus the heals you’ll encounter.
The worst problem with this one is coming across heavy condition stackers that you can’t shut down before they load you up.
Bumper sticker. Bored.
Think I’ll add my latest version of my P/P builds.
^ or not, given that it’s pretty much 100% the same as Drakkonis’ Ranged thief build. :P

Kitten me.
I was testing it on D/P. Decided to stick with this one [attached in photo]. I honestly do not feel comfortable with D/P still. My problem is that I still cannot see it as being an aggressive one so gradually I will adapt to a more defensive play-style starting with this one.

Having come from purely Sword-using origins, it took me a while to really appreciate D/P as well. Now, I run it all the time, and I can tell you that I run a much, much more defensive build than the one above (0/0/20/30/20). And yet, it works. I guess it’s (in part) because I run pretty much full zerker gear, or, failing that (don’t have enough gold to buy everything that I want, sadly enough) I focus on Power and Precision. For me, the result has been a very hardy build that does a great amount of damage, has plenty of stealth, and a lot of dodges. It’s probably a bit nooby in that I use HS+Stealth so much, but it works, and that’s why I like it. Plus, it seems fairly original to me, which is something that I definitely like.

Kitten scholar. I am going for divinity runes and thats it.
I tried Sword Main hand like 5 times and I just couldn’t get round to it or hated it style to be honest. I will always vision it as the most superdefensive build out of them all so that is definitely not something that suits my style.
In WvW (I assume you do that) I envy you guys because you got do so much with a thief’s build it is ridiculous and adjust it perfectly to your needs and wants as well. It is a win-win situation for me there. I honestly do not think a bad build exists in WvW because you can get your keystats from everywhere and just experiment as much as you please.
yeah, the stat tweaking is something i miss when I go to tpvp. the drastic changes in where my numbers can and will be in there vs. wvwvw is insane.
pve/wvwvw allows more customization that’s for sure (not even counting the foods).
I’ll be trying out some purely SB-based builds when I can, probably add those under the “Ranged” section. I’ve tried a few before, they’re actually pretty good, although they rely on CB a lot. -_-

I am really against those because if you purely go for ranged builds then you might as well reroll to a ranger but that is my opinion.

I know what you mean, and while I partially agree, Rangers don’t have the stealth nor mobility that thieves have. Also, Rangers’ bows don’t give them a lot of versatility, whikitten n the thief is a highly flexible weapon. Still, overall, I might be inclined to agree with you.
Problems that I noticed:
The “D/P direct damage build by Authority” is showing up as D/D.
The “condition counter build by Authority” is showing up as a bad link.
Other than those, looks good so far. I didn’t go through every single link because some of those playstyles aren’t to my taste, but it’s always nice to see what other people do with S/D.
Brought to you by ArenaNet. Soon™.
Edit: i cant read. Lol, and bump!

Fixing now, thanks.
Added this to favourites, will have a good look through when i get home from work.
Ive been searching for good thief build for a while now, one which is applicable to PVE & WVW.
Tried many, but still feel something is either lacking in damage output in one or survivability in the other.Any advice where i should start looking?
Lemme see what I can grab you…
Ok, here are the two that I thought might be best for you:
Pros:
-pretty balanced offense + defense, although slightly more offense than defense
-similar to most other backstab builds, if that’s what you’re used to
-lots of stealth
-teleporting up cliffs and whatnot
-overall fairly balanced for a backstab build
Cons:
-if you’re not a fan of the stereotypical backstab thief, this might not be the build for you
-not many dodges
-lower base initiative pool
-still a bit unbalanced
Now, here’s my build that I run virtually 99% of the time:
Pros:
-High initiative regen, and the +3 base initiative pool
-Going to use just about every attack on your bar, as they’re all fantastic
-Shadowsteps, shadowsteps everywhere
-Stealth
-Very nice survivability for a thief build
-Still very good damage
Cons:
-since you have +300 vitality, +30% boon duration, +200 toughness, and +200 healing, to balance out, you’ll want to buy aggressive gear, preferably zerker. Unfortunately, zerker gear tends to cost the most, so you’ll have to slowly buy one piece at a time if you’re poor (like me)
-The lack of any trait points in either of the first two trees might be a huge change for you, as most builds run at least a few points in one of the first two trees, DA and CS
-Not as aggressive as most other thief builds
-DO NOT PICK THIS BUILD IF YOU ARE BAD AT REMOVING CONDITIONS. JUST DON’T. DON’T DO IT TO YOURSELF. This build has some pretty awful condition removal. Fortunately, you can change that by changing SA I to SA IV, but… Idk, I love SA I too much for that, personally.
Those are the two that I’d suggest right off the bat to you, maybe I can find others.

I’ve never been able to alt…. The very thought of it sickens me. I was fortunate to pick one of the most dynamic and enjoyable classes in the game as my main.

I always have, and that is what’s refreshing. I guess it’s because I can do so many different playstyles with each character, but hell. NONE of them feel as fluid and smooth as the thief.

Well If I tell you why this is the new SPvP Killah Arena will definitely nerf it.
/facepalm.
On a serious note, the changes and switches I make over time are on par with my vision of a Thief’s role in groups; so specifically in SPvP. Whereas I would be overly aggressive with D/D, with D/P I had to compromise into what exactly I want to be and how my personal playstyle can contribute to group dynamics.
I took me approximately two months (since I am indeed a slow learner) to feel comfortable with D/P and so I have been struggling until last week where I am feeling it.
I am personally not fond of long cooldowns in traits and I do not think that long cooldowns synergize well with a thief. I see it as a paradox. But that is my perception that has been reinforced from other MMOs and hasn’t changed at all with this one as well.
I would like to think that this build is an all around build for SPvP; I would like to think it is good enough to be called a DPS Roamer build. That is how I see my self right now and it might just be me who has that completed vision about how to maximize/utilize dps with roaming.
On another note, this is an old debate but
- 15 points on acrobatics could be spend on other trait lines; i.e Shadow I assume.
- Withdraw with vigor trait.
- If you see your self inclined to invest on might you might as well go full on it; might runes + possibly investing more on the damage trait.
- I had a brief discussion with someone about the whole boon strip way but I can’t remember what exactly was said but when I do I will add to it.
But like I said this is the way I see a thief or my self into a group for SPvP.
(edited by Authority.6145)
Here ya go. 15/30/0/0/25
Glassy, not terrible health pool, crit/condition mix.
Mainly whittle them down with shortbow and choking gas, trying to maintain distance as best you can (allowing them to think you are a… ranged… thief…, or baiting them into something), when they close, switch and keep consistent bleeds on them with some autoattack pressure while avoiding the big things you can.
I keep withdraw because of it’s low cooldown.
I go 15 in da for the weakness on poison, and the power is beneficial. Mug is for bursting, otherwise I would nab 33% poison, or everything else seems meh even more so than poison.
30 in CS is vital for executioner. I use the +7% crit on side, and the precision>vitality ones since it’s so glassy like, and not fully devoted to zerker gear.
25 in trickery for mainly more ini and Lead Attacks. Starting out with your shortbow and such seems meh, but you’ll be critting with trickshot 1.2-2.4ish, CB hurts, and the bleeds will not be pleasant (70ish ticks), choking gas is mainly all I am trying to keep on them though for the time. with lead attack’s and just trying to keep them poisoned you’re going to be sitting around 18-20% bonus damage consistently, more if they are below 50%.
when they close on you(or you them) can swap to daggers, and keep consistent bleeds on them, while providing decent direct pressure through autoattack and backstabs (provided you are managing initiative).
utilities are pretty much preference, whatever keeps you alive. Same with food, though I like the -%condition durations, and the end regen one. Heal is too, but the 15s cd on withdraw is near vital for as exposed as this spec normally is.
Didn’t see one like it, but again, I can be blind!
edit, I don’t have the exact gear I threw in the editor, but here’s what the stats in game are looking like for me, and I am happy with it so far, still playing with it to get a good feel on it though!

I really like the fact that might lasts longer, it is easier to stack and also you get 5percent damage up each time you have got might. So in combination with the other sigil you apply on you weapon (5percent damage) you have got always 10percent damage on your offhand.
Sorry Arga but since I got a couple of discussions with others this is the last twitch I will make.
