My Daredevil Build: The Defender!
Hey dudes,
Post what Profession/Build you struggle to fight 1v1 against and anyone who has knowledge of the match-up chimes in with suggestions and help!
Hated fights are probably mesmer. Everyone else is eh to easy.

Ah man, Mesmers
Power Mesmers aren’t too bad but the Perplex PU Mesmers can be a problem.
As far as Power Mesmers are concerned whenever you’re revealed, but they’re invisible you should try kill any clones which pop up and prepare to defend against the incoming 15k burst. Shadowstep, and dodge rolls are pretty much required to nullify what’s coming.
Try your best to out stealth them, but it can be pretty tricky because they don’t rely on stealth so but have access to the PU trait which makes it silly.
Blinds as well. Blinding them is pretty hilarious.
Watch out for the GS#5 as well for when you Shadow Refuge, it WILL knock you out of the zone no matter where you stand inside.
Perplex PU Mesmers can go die in a fire. The only success I’ve had vs these kittens is to kill their clones, clear the conditions and occasionally hit them because I’m too worried about the 13 stacks of Confusion and 10 stacks of Torment. 5k Damage for casting my Withdraw which only heals for 4k >_>.
I know to deal with the clones and dodge, but sometimes they just instagib you with their wombo combo whenyou arent looking and make you sad.

Oddly I’ve found running Roll for Initiative the ultimate “nope.avi” to the Mesmer power combo. Just play with your fingers ready to press it. The roll is instant, breaks stun and then evades the rest of the combo.
Then mesmer is still stealthed. If not, swaps to sword and blurs. Then uses decoy and does it again? Not trying to be depressing, but mesmer is the new thief. =/ Makes me cry.
dd ele? i just look at them and say: yeahhh…… i am out of here~
if blinding ashes and burning fire didn’t exist you could have some chance but this 2 traits completely deny any counter
i can deal with most mes though

I mean medi-guards are usually a given so I’ll say condi made engi due to the lockdown they can create. Even switching to SB won’t stop them from lobbing grenades at you. Or DD ELE, the trick is to get them after they use water attunement, catch is, that is also when they are most dangerous, very dangerous game being played there.
Funny, I find D/D ele and medi guard to be a quick and easy kill.
P/P master race.

Well yeah. But get close and physical with them.
1v1s are mostly really easy, but if it had to be, hardest are burn guardians and those new fookin trap rangers, both heavy condi. Any tips?

Burn Guardians
- When they Switch to Torch they will throw a ball of blue flame at you. It has a slow animation and you must dodge this.
-Don’t cross or fight the blue ring symbol
-When he teleports to you and lays down burn stacks on you, you must immediately remove it. I usually go SA condi removal on stealth. Blinding powder to remove instantly. Make sure you don’t use condi removal accidentally from guardians sword 2 teleport.
If you avoid all that you have like a 50% chance to win. It’s still pointless to 1v1 them, it takes way too long to kill them, but if you have points locked down and catch them roaming you can 1v1 to waste their time.
I just go p/p to deal with them both. I use sigil of generosity as well.
Generally, the hardest 1v1’s to win for me are the players using high sustain builds who are quicker and more experienced than me. As far as specific classes and builds go, I don’t duel enough to want to name any definitively, but I suspect d/d ele, condi mesmer, and maybe minion necro would be among the hardest if I did duel more.
Within sPvP, though, there’s nothing more discouraging as a thief player than to be matched up against a d/p thief who seems to understand what I’m attempting to do against him better than I do. I can run from the sustain masters. I can even occasionally close some of the gap in the 1v1 capability of our classes and the gap in our current skill as players by building stacks of blood-lust off lesser players and/or timely +1ing. It’s much more difficult to disengage from a fellow thief and much less beneficial to leave a 1v1 against one when they can +1 whatever fight I disengage toward just as easily as I can.

Assuming meta thief
Burn guardians (guardians in general) have a million and one tells and are reeeeeallllly slow. Unless you wanna wait a million years to wear down their blocks while hopping in and out of stealth, get used to your SB.
Generally, burn guardians are an easier kill than your age old power medi because they either sacrifice their GS for SW/F which would mean a lot less AoE or they sacrifice focus for torch which means their only form of mitigating damage comes from shelter, VoC (virtue of courage), and RF. All of these blocks come to a grand total of 5ish or so seconds of block. After that, they’re essentially defenseless. Your steal should strip their second round of stability (assuming they chose that over the AoE burn on proccing their passive burn), after that its smooth sailing.
^to get to that point, you have to dodge their initial burst. They usually open with SC/TT which is usually chains>smite>activate zealots flame from here, they have two options of attacking
1st is the flame toss into GS whirl (assuming GS and not SW/F). If you didn’t dodge this, you’re already dead. If they have SW/F, you’ve been given a little bit of a grace period for dealing with their burst, but still dodge their sword flurry.
2nd is when you aren’t facing idiots. They’ll usually activate their ZF and keep the fire burning on them as they whirl into you. The full duration of this burn combined with the second one they get from critting (which isn’t impossible if they’re running valor) will, again, kill you outright. Problem a lot of people have is dodging the initial scepter immobilize. If you dodge that, dodging the rest will be cake and the fight will practically be yours.
General rule of thumb for guardians is to always open with scepter. General rule of thumb VS guardians is to watch them carefully, wait for that first wave of their scepter hand and then dodge because the scepter immobilize is basically two waves of the hand. The skill completes the cast on the second wave of their hand more or less. Once you’ve dodged the chains, they can’t reliably land their smite, they can’t reliably land their fire so they’ll be forced to open earlier with their GS. Once you see the swap to GS, you know the whirl and teleport are coming so you should already be dodging/steal thing to cleanse w.e burn might be coming your way. Once you’ve dealt with these, guard is complete cake thanks to 0 mobility.
Oh and I think this is a given, but don’t stand in their flaming circle :P.
Thieves and mesmers that slam me with confusion. Especially both at once. x_x
Celestial rifle engineers and D/D celestial Elementalist are ouch.
As someone who plays a Mesmer for a main and also has a Thief alt, dagger storm is great tool to use against those clones. If you know it’s a PU/condi Mesmer, dagger storm + burst will be pretty effective. It doesn’t work worth crap against a power Mesmer though.
D/D celestial ele is ridiculously hard to kill if they are played in a competent manner. They also have the ability to nuke a thief in short order. Equally as painful are power mesmers that know what they are doing. Condi mesmers can destroy a thief with low condi removal.

If it is a shatter build killing clones is fine. If it isn’t a shatter build, that spin will get you dead quick.
