Has thief improved after the updates?
Thief is a very big hit or miss. Either you have a thief who knows where to be and when to be there, or you have a thief who skirmishes and doesn’t know how to capture points.
As for their standing relatively speaking, with the buff of staff and dagger auto-attacks they can be extremely dangerous assuming they don’t have weakness applied to them.
Right now, both from what I’ve heard and from what I’ve gone up against in PvP, reaper necro and scrapper engi are probably the top of the pyramid right now. Tempest eles can be VERY tanky as well, making it necessary for 2 if not 3 people to pile on 1 to kill them.
However, the hardest to kill for thieves are trapper guards. Their traps can be nasty if you’re out of evades, and if you’re a zerker thief, a trapper guard who has lain down all their traps can insta kill you with them even if they’re not there. You just have to watch out and evade them if you can.
Hi guys, I know thief often gets a bad rep and whilst this is not true in all cases, I was wondering whether the 2016 update has given back the thief profession a bit more power again to contend with other classes.
Thanks very much.
They underperform to Engi’s/DH/Rev/Necro by a big amount. The changes have helped a little, but it’s still a gamble to have one on your team, or to play one for that matter.
only more dps on autoatacks. still thief is ocnsidered trash tier in pvp
Thanks very much guys

Okay I’m legit curious. Why do so many thieves find it difficult to fight reapers? I understand the others are a bit difficult but I would never consider reapers as a problem. Dodge through marks, kite out the shroud, use steal skill for interrupts and pi damage.. Pretty simple imo.

I think he was talking about how classes perform in PvP where these 4 classes a far easier to play then thief —> easier to have an impact in the match. A well played thief is devastating though.
Reaper are definitly doable in 1vs1, but it could not worth the amount of time/utilities it needs. A good necro is noticeable and when he has full shroud it becomes very difficult. Using dash over bound helps a lot here (bound is great to +1 a necro).
If you make mistakes it can be over quickly and if you die in that duel it gets your team in a worse situation.
thief easiliy wins vs reaper but it takes very long becouse thief has to w8 nearby while necro is in shroud. So necro stands on point for 20 seconds while his shroud is dropping. Finelly u kill him and cap point for 5 seconds when he comes back and again he caps it for 20 seconds
thief is ok for 1+ and decapping in pvp but rev is just as good
1v1 thief sucks bad
pve autoattacks are good dmg
we are not the 1v1 class we once where, risk reward is high risk, barely any reward
dead class at this point if you like the deception 1v1 playstyle

This is kinda how I’ve been feeling. I’ve been playing both Thief and Rev, and Rev just seems to be better than Thief now at all the same jobs Thief had. Maybe I’m wrong, but I seem to have much more success with Rev than Thief in ranked, and some WvW guilds simply won’t take my Thief because they don’t want them in zergs, but if I were on my Rev, they’d take me. (Yes, I asked them if they’d prefer Rev over Thief, and they said yes in every circumstance they’d prefer Rev over Thief).
Of course they prefer Rev over thief, but they’d prefer any class over thief in zergs since ages – unless they know you and know that you’re good. Pulling thief off is hard enough, pulling it off in zergs is even a bit harder – although I have some very kind druids lately who keep my health up (= usually in a zerg the people take care of each other which makes things easier).

So why do people even play this class anymore? It just sounds like Thief isn’t good at much at all anymore.

A lot of us dont. There are a lot of decent thieves who rerolled to rev or other classes, at least for ranked pvp. Those of us, who still like their class and have fun playing it stick with it.
But mark my words: the second thief becomes a viable pick for high ranked pvp, we will be overrun. There are a lot of people out there, who enjoy the profession, and even if they rerolled for now, to not make their team loose, they havent given up the class entirely.
Creating alts, especially for pvp is extremely easy. You can go with the flavour of the month, without having to give up playing the profession you like.
Although…whenever i put my thief aside for a week or two, and return to her, I am suprised how incredibly challenging thief gameplay is and how much skill it really requires.
I’m not so sure about the “reroll” thing. Most thief mains I had on my FL have quit the game entirely – or are still running thief (not a significant number, I know).
Sometimes things/people aren’t that easy “We need to have the elites OP so people buy the expansion, they will reroll when their main class sucks” – nope.

I play it because it feels like the closest class to mesmer, and mesmer is in a really bad spot for uncoordinated teams. Portal is something of a saving grace, but good luck pulling those strategies off in solo queue.

Ohhh, got it. Sorry, I took it from a WvW roaming perspective, not PvP. Sounds good.
