My Daredevil Build: The Defender!
Yo dudes,
It’s strange but where ever I look, if a Thief is ever mentioned outside of the Thief section, there’s loads of hate for some reason.
I’m kind of semi-new when it comes to the forums, I’ve never really found much’a reason to come on here.
Did we do something to offend everyone? I see a lot of people calling us over-powered, or we have broken stealth mechanics, ect.
Could someone please enlighten me as to why we’re getting the verbal boot?

I’d say it’s because of stealth but mesmers, although a lot more dangerous in their current state, don’t get as much hate, I think.
Good question though, thief has had some nerf just before I started to play (thief) and I literally had zergs following me around the whole map just to kill me.
Since then things calmed down a bit, just the usual rangers who hate thieves which are gone for now as well and elitist thieves who call every other thief a scrub.
But in the end I think it is because playing thief successfully requires more skill than any other class, so those who call thieves OP might have tried thief themselves, found that they can’t pull it off and went back to cry “NERF”.
When you argue with them (“haters”) it usually comes down to
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
Most of those players have never played a thief in their lives and don’t understand how it works or how to beat it. Instead they hate you, complain about you, and you receive a steady stream of nerfs. The most recent being acro ricochet ect. People are still crying about the signet/might back stab build which is garbage in actual play.
A-lot of players in Gw2 are just simply not good and react very slowly when ganked. They panic and have no game plan or just give up immediately and think thief is somehow un-killable. Several people don’t even try to auto or setup skills to detect or counter play a stealthed thief.
Thief in HoT will be even more miserable with all these classes getting “reveals” that actually de-stealth you and apply the reveal debuff on top of it.
I personally always found the idea of a debuff that can negate an entire traitlines worth of choices poor and pathetic in terms of design, but that is what it is.
Meanwhile your Mesmer counter parts can delete your character in about 2-3 button presses or just stay stealth for an entire fight spamming phantasms in places like WvW but they are “just fine”.
Roll a Rev before its too late so you can maintain your hated status(Sword 3 is op wah wah q q )!
TL:DR Mug used to crit, sword 2 used to stun break, and you used to be able to win fights by mashing 2. None of that is there anymore but a single warrior GS spin can one shot you, Kappa.

Already started the preparations to insta-80 and gear it >:D. Can’t wait for Rev, as the last BWE was amazing to play it.

Woah, woah, woah! To be fair, it’s not a 1 shot, more like a 4 shot.
And if you want to read some complaints, you can find them here:

It is the nature of the beast. When you give a class high damage and invisibility, it makes people mad. This isn’t a problem unique to GW2, either. Back in City of Heroes, people hated Stalkers in PVP, and they had the same bag of tricks.
It is a PVP thing mostly. In PVE you don’t get much thief hatred.
It will be funny if these same people try to play wildstar when its F2P stealth+tether mine xD RELEASE THE PANIC
Also @Maugetarr fine fine Ran over instead of 1 shot :P
I fail to understand the hate for Thief in PvP.
I’m a relatively new player, I played for about a month of Thief and playing pretty much every class after Thief feels like a massive upgrade. Be it synergy between traits+builds, much more forgiveness in execution, more defensive options, the same or even higher burst damage, more versatility and utility. Why would anyone hate on Thieves now? Might as well go hate on Mesmers since they do everything we do 2x better.
Honestly, does ANet hate Thieves? Because after a month of playing one I’m already frustrated. I can’t even begin to image how someone who has mained a Thief for 2 + years must feel.

Well we were the ones that used to keep the mesmer population down. They will miss us soon enough
Oh and another factor is in most games the assassin/rogue/thief/ninja is generally hated… It just perpetuated to this game as well.

They feel like this, with a little less hope in their eyes:

They miss us already. Had to give someone a build to beat, and I quote, Cele and Mesmer because they are way too strong at this point. They said it was because of getting countered cough BULLkitten cough.
@Zero- I agree. I play Evelynn in League, I play Nova in HoT, Thief here etc, etc. I always play stealth burster whose consistent counterplay is literally “be observant, and build a little defensively” but nobody wants to be bothered with the definition of learn to play. They just wanna mash faces and see a victory sign.
Stealth causes all the nerd rage in every game.
I thought those were footprints.
Come to think of it – why isn’t our guild called “me [NERF]” ?
ETA: or “me please [BUFF]” for those who are beyond desperate

There’s also a ninja in that room – and that’s his puppy.
Rather than retype my thoughts on this topic I’ll just re-post my take from a similar thread:
It’s my fav but the mechanic or class-type is hated on in every MMO. Sins in GW1, Stalkers in CoH and Wildstar, Rogues in WoW and AoC, Witch Hunter in WAR, etc, etc, ad nauseum.
I get it as they are often horribly designed and even more horribly implemented. Most game devs seem to focus on Warrior/Monk/Ranger and Mage classes first and foremost and everything else is the kittened cousin nobody wants to deal with hence the stealthy glass cannon class is normally broken at release and never truly fixed or completed.
Usually they just get nerfed to the point of death even though fans of the class like me will play them…self-gimping or not.
At the end of the day nobody likes to be ganked. It doesn’t matter if the ganker can be killed in one hit if the victim has any semblance of skill or awareness. The majority just hate the fact that if played well, outside bad or broken design, another player can “bamf” kill them “bamf” gone.
There is also the issue that most devs seem to design them from the ground up as a PvP specific class which tends to make them inferior in PvE which just adds more hate from the general community as while everyone else is able to finish the game spamming an auto attack the “Thief/Rogue/Glass Cannon/Whatever” class drops dead as soon as a mob farts on them. As for gated content that requires grouping…yeah…welcome to being last on the list to get an invite to that party.
This is now deeply ingrained into MMO dogma and the overall psyche of the genres player-base.
Personally I just love the play style but yeah…I get why they are hated on.
I think most players still have trauma from first year of gw2 when you could kill people with HS spam. Class changed a lot since then but flashbacks are reals i guess.
Also, stealth was always very frustrating mechanic to deal with for a lot of players in any game. Vs stealth you actually have to think and play mind games, let’s face it which average Joe wants it? The average Joe just want iHulk iSmash and collect points.
Dealing with elusive enemy is not so satisfactory.
Also, thieves are very squishy, anyone knows it, whole nature of the class is being coward and play dirty. You would be surprised how many players are out there that expect you to stand and fight face to face like a true warrior. You think you got them, nope they get away, come back and possibly kill you – that leads to a lot of frustration from “honest” players and QQ.

You know its funny I never once got upset for getting ganked by rogue types in any mmorpg and I do not play them, I only took interest in thief in this game because they actually look fun to play. I do not understand how people can hate a class when these mechanics have almost always existed in fantasy rpgs, maybe if people would learn to work together they would not get ganked instead of complaining here and getting them nerfed.
Easier to complain and get a nerf on something than to improve.

I can +1 this.
I main as a warrior, but have over 500 hours on my thief.
Think about it, why wouldn’t you hate a thief? You play them in wvw, you can’t see them until they crit you, then if you have superior numbers they stealth and hit the trails. Some people die without us ever being seen.
It’s just an easy class to hate, but I think by the time HoT drops, Mesmers will be hated much more.
From the start D/P thieves have been owning newbs, taking advantage of hurt players and running from good players. So you have newer and less skilled players getting owned out of nowhere complaining. Then you have skilled players griping because they get strafed by a thief and cannot finish off the fight due to copious amounts of thief stealth and mobility. Add on the relative ease in skill D/P needs to be effective and you have a lot of hate floating around.
ANet then doubled down making D/P one of the last decent builds for thieves at least in WvW so a lot of thieves that used to play other weapon sets moved to D/P.
I would argue that Cele D/D Ele and Shatter Mesmers are infinitely more annoying to fight but that is lost to lessor skilled players.
