Oscuro Tanque~lv. 80 Guardian|
[RaW] Kaineng
I was in the forums with people complaining about how thieves CANT be a tank and I made this build just to see. Now, it turns out thieves can be anything like Anet said! I have 16k health which isn’t great but 3.1k armor and still do okay damage.
I made this build for fun because I had a lot of gold and figured I hadn’t really spent it in a couple months, so I tried this. It turned out to be very fun with EXTREME heals as I heal 50 passively per second, and 300 per hit and 300 per second in stealth.
Overview: Full clerics. Everything is clerics. Then you run 0/0/30/20/20.
The dagger can be replaced by the sword, but I choose not to because, A) Backstabbing still hits for about 2k on guardians, making it very low for a thief, but still decent damage since you won’t lose health Sognet of malice doesn’t factor in how hard you hit, only IF you hit. Since the dagger AA is very fast, I choose them because it heals the most.
So far this build has been pretty effective, I’ve done one 1v1 in WvW and soloed 2 lv80 champs. Haven’t had much playtime with it, but I will update the thread when I do.
In my experience, if you want to build for a tanker thief, I found having only roughly 500 healing to be more than enough, (so just your trinkets).
That’s enough to keep a decent amount sustain damage off you, even out heal some condition damage quite well,
After that you can put of some non cleric armour on, I usually use a mix of knight and cavalier , which still gets you a 4-6k backstab, and you keep the toughness
Edit: I should also point out those number are with taking the 30 point in shadow and throwing it in crit, so you lose a bit of toughness, but I never had an issue with that.

thieves cant tank. period. doesnt matter if u give them the highest amount of armor they can get. 30 in SA full soldiers or clerics or apoth or dire etc. they still die fast.
Thieves have no access to Protection, and Stability comes only with an elite. Add in medium armor and the lowest possible HP, and building a “tank” thief is probably wrong in its inception.
If you want survivability, we can definitely do that. We have tools to avoid damage, and we can build to heal ourselves. But if your plan is to stand out in the open like a heavy, and heal yourself through the carnage, you’ve probably picked the worst possible class.
uhg no offense but that build is so bad it accomplishes nothing. In group play your dead weight you have no support and barely and damage. You will barely be able to kill any half decent player in wvw.
You wont be able to kill any tanky condi build of any class. After and certain point armor give diminishing returns. If you wanna be that tanky your better off going full dire condition thief. You will have just as much armor and your dps will be much better.
kittenty build. .
This build isn’t meant to be a serious build. It may not yield the same results as the meta builds that are out right now, like the p/d build I run, but it is fun. You can kill things, because after some more WvW play, I have 1v1ed a few classes and done some havocing and the build puts out enough dos to be damaging and put on pressure, but maintains you health well enough to not need to use the active heal. Its not meant to be a serious build, just am experiment on if thieves can sustain a tank build effectively. The answer, IMO, is yes.
I see you took the OP trait-build: 0/0/0/0/0 … I hope you don’t get us nerfed even more with this build!

It’s not quite as OP as 14/14/14/14/14, so I think we should be safe.
In another day and age, thieves could tank.
Now, you’re going to have to live on the edge, or you’re simply not going to do anything.

Next patch:
We didn’t want thieves doing as much damage as they do in the current meta (actually, we didn’t want them to be doing any damage at all), and since stealth = invincibility that you can do damage in, we’ve decided to cut down the thief’s damage by changing all of the trait trees so that 1) you have to invest all 70 of your trait points in them and 2) so that you didn’t get as much damage and/or defense by, for example, not getting Last Refuge. While we still have yet to finish our changes to the thief trees, here’s one of the edits that we’ve made:
Adept:
5 points- Non-improvisation: When you steal, start all of your utilities on their cooldowns. Bundles now do 10% less damage.
I- Critically Slow- you have a 25% chance to gain Delay on a critically weak hit.*
II- Slighted – Stealing also dazes you.
III- Mugged- when you steal, you have a 50% chance to lose half of your gold.
IV- Impotent Poison- when you use a poison utility, it now applies the effects of that poison to you.
V- Shot Ankle- you now have permanent cripple.
VI- Impatient- lose all of your initiative when you enter stealth.
Master:
15 points- Hard to Catch
VII- Pain Response- you are stunned for 20 seconds when your health is below 75%. 10s cooldown.
VIII- Ricochet- pistol shots have a chance to bounce back to yourself.
IX- Go Meld With Something Else- you now have permanent Revealed applied to you.
X- Non-opportunist- at the beginning of each match, you /sit for the first 5 minutes of the game.
Grandmaster:
25 points- Exposed Weakness- you now run around naked and cannot equip armor.
XI- Thrill of Losing- whenever you join a Solo Queue match, you cause your teammates to say “gg we have a thief” and then disconnect. Teammates are routed to another match and you are given Dishonorable.
XII- Last Refuge
*Your base Critical Damage is now 50%, which you can decrease by investing points into what was before the Critical Damage stat. Therefore, if you make a critical hit, you’ll now hit for only 50% damage at base levels.
You have some leet healing there
What situation would you use this build/gear in? I have to say I would be extremely hesitant to run around with 10.8k health in any situation. Not saying it isn’t possible, I guess I just prefer vitality over toughness.
