idk wtf to say
Some rangers have their stuff together, but general rule of thumb is they fold fast.
Try CnD off his pet next time

Hmm this would help to get closer to him, thanks i’ll try that as well
What r ur utilities? U shuld have a stun immob break i use shadow step to get behind them then cnd
Shadowstep/Infiltrator’s Signet + Steal should be enough to get in range. Cripple them while you’re at it to stop them getting the distance back, and C+D the pet if you have to.

Thanks guys, Ill def try these out and Mystogan, i do have shadow step
Gap closers are key in fighting any ranged class it seems. Even with the 25% signet I still have trouble chasing people down it seems either they have cripple or they have 25% too, or even worse 33% near constantly. As a thief you have several ways to close the gap, Shadow step is a great skill as stated above. Saving your steal for mid fight rather than an opener can also help. And lastly though you should never spam it, heart seeker is a great gap closer though it does suffer a bit while chilled or crippled.
I don’t know what your build is but there are also several traits you can take that help with removing conditions. #7 Fleet of Foot in acrobattics lets you remove cripple and weakness on dodge 10s CD. and #4 Shadows embrace on the shadow arts tree lets your remove conditions while in stealth. (removes 1 condition when you first stealth then 1 more ever 3 seconds while in stealth) Both of these are very useful skills in trees that are fairly common.

50% move speed in stealth also helps for opponents who are a bit more kite-heavy than you can handle…
I usually wipe the floor with rangers shrug my problem class is the bloody GS mesmers and their channel-auto which just makes a joke of stealth.

Rangers are one of the easiest professions to win against in WvW, 1v1. They can’t spike you, they can’t escape, they can’t take a beating.
I recommend d/p #3.
“Seriously ranger is a free kill for a thief. You’ve a BS build – you shoulddrop him in 2s – if you’re really that bad and can’t press 3 buttons restealth, back off and come back again in 10s and finish the job.”
As a Ranger and Thief player at level 80 – you should never be able to BS a ranger – too many traits and abilities designed to either auto-counter a BS attack or leave it up to one button press. A lot of the rhetoric on the Ranger forums is good rangers who love getting free badges and glory from GC thieves.
Personally I don’t have too many probs with them because I know how to get them to burn their defenses… and if I am on P/D then they never get to win as the pet is a liability… but GC thieves should be pretty containable for a ranger.
I play Ranger and Thief and GC thieves are normally not an issue. But I run a trap build and a good number of glass cannons get so fixated on the attack they don’t notice that I have stacked poison, cripple, burn and several bleeds on them till they fall over dead. A really good ranger VS a really good thief is a fun fight if both of them are on their game.

Yeah I actually followed a Ranger and BS thief in WvW who were fighting over a long period of time, kind of pondering who to pounce on. They kept it up well and nobody died as I decided to go after the thief just because it was a BS thief who had been trying to get me in previous raid well the thief stealthed off anyway. Other than that I consider rangers a relatively easy target (as a thief myself) I play S/P and use Shadow Step and Infiltrators strike and generally keep them as blinded as possible. Seems to work. Some do know what they’re at and if they see me first I may have to Shadow Refuge and come back at them when they think I’ve legged it. I also use the ability that dodge removes cripple you really have to get out of the way if you’re at range with nothing to play with these guys.
As a note I always run Shadow Step with Infiltrators strike in WvW not only is SS a great survival tool coupled with Inf Strike it covers a massive distance to a foe instantly so many have died thinking they were at a safe distance. Signet of Shadows should also be renamed – Signet of the Past – this bad boy isn’t much use anymore I believe.

Your right, to a degree. With the right skills a ranger can spike, escape AND take a beating. >:)
Besides that.
Good. Some rangers are slowly making progress – To my fellow rangers stop going Glass Cannon you make it too easy!!!!

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for killing a typical ranger (shortbow). I have a build that uses stealth and backstabs(though not a GC) and classes like warriors or guardians arent a problem since they generally stay in the same area. Rangers though are always keeping their distance from me (cant blame them) which makes it difficult for me to get in a CD and even more for a BS. Initiating the fight is one thing, thats easy to do, its finishing it. It doesnt help how sometimes they see me when im in stealth even when the debuff is gone and they are shooting me as they are keeping their distance. Oh and their pets…kitten warthogs. Should I switch to ranged gear at that point?
You didn’t post your build, neither you specified your offhand weapon. That would help.Other than that here is several simple advices:
1.Their channeling abilities track you trough stealth. You might wanna dodge it away,no matter that you are in Stealth.
2.Try P/D on the offhand. You will C&D on the pet(while still having the ranger on target) and Sneak attack on the ranger.
3.Alternatively if you don’t wanna change weapon sets keep them always crippled(if you can afford ini for Dancing Dagger.

Good rangers are annoying.
If your playing D/D backstab you’ll have your work cut out for you.
As an Sword thief, I keep them pin downed and warp around like my life depended on it. Cripple them. It’s hard since dancing dagger is expensive, but since they have a pet if you get in range it can cripple them twice and stack.
If it’s a dual melee Ranger, go /P and never look back.
Warthogs? You got lucky they aren’t using the Pig. Pigs OHKO thieves, always.
As a ranger myself, I find thiefs to be the hardest of all professions to fight 1vs1.
You say rangers keep you at range with SB. I’m running lb/sb in wvw, but if you’re stealthing up at me I can’t hit kitten untill you annoying thieves are dancing around me allready cutting me everywhere.
My ranger has no problem against thief .. I run trap build and they can’t even come close..and if they want to do some range fight..short bow ranger will always win

This actually helps me clarify. The GOOD rangers are the problem, most just stand still as if they want me to kill them. my build is 0/30/30/0/10. The well played rangers are the trap users and the ones who are smart enough to back peddle while keeping distance. Is this a matchup I should flat out avoid?
skills i usually role are HiS, S.Step, Sig of Shadows <.<, and S.Refuge. TG for elite for that extra dps
