It’s good to be bad!
Hi everyone
How can a sword be viable in a Thief, in PvE and WvW?
With a pistol.

What this guy said. You’ll eat Dagger Thieves with S/P
yeap. those stuns are tough when they hit. only bad side is PW does leave u vulnerable at the very beginning and end. so be careful.
So S/P. Does it work in WvW? I know it does in PvE, but alsmost anything works in PvE so this is not the problem
It works very well. You just have to practice to become good at it.

Just don’t jump into a crowd full of retaliation and you’ll be fine.
What a coincidence. I use a sword on my Ranger. I’m my opinion, my sword is always viable in a thief. Where else should I stick it?
s/d is also viable in WvW…though I find it difficult to use. Others swear by it. Get good at CnD, and you can be nearly as uncatchable as d/p. On the other hand you’ll also have very respectable auto-attack damage, snares galore, teleports and boonstripping on demand. Your burst isn’t as good, but you’ve got tools to make up for it.
S/d is ok in PvE too, but S/P is better 90% of the time. In a zerky build, S/P is a great mixture of aoe dps, evasions and CC.

Sigil of nulification helps a lot with that and lead in with a boon strip steal. It’s funny to watch them freak out after they don’t realize they’re retaliation is gone and they’re just standing there getting smacked.
I use S/D + SB using a Beserker/Knight mix with 0/10/30/30/0 trait configuration for high initiative regeneration and all sources of health regeneration (regeneration on stealth, stealth heals, heal on usage of initiative). I use a knights helm, leggings and two rings (with Ruby Orb) proving me a grand total of 31.55% damage reduction. I use Melandru Runes and condition duration food for a grand total of -65% condition duration. This makes me sturdy, resistant against conditions, with a high healing potential and high dodging (semi-permanent vigor with high initiative regen does that) with as little as possible impact on the total damage output. I call it a semi-bunker, and has been fine-tuned to my style over the months leaving me in a perfect spot (for me) to roam, zerg and duel. If you die, it doesn’t feel like it was because of an overpowered enemy, but rather your own mistakes. This works for me, so I hope this provides a good starting point for your perfect thief.

My first thought when reading the title of this thread was http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Impale_%28warrior_sword_skill%29
About the sword: I ran sword back when I was running around with a lev 17thief in wvw to pin down targets for the zerg to overrun. It’s some sort of control based weapon and packs quite some punch.
