As the title may indicate, fighting godzerkers (the noob friendly 2 button = win kind) are one of my weak points (that and DH) so I am reaching out for assistance. I am running D/P + P/P in DA/TR/DD. I used to be able to beat them before but it seems like either they are getting better/cheesier or I am getting worse so instead of crying like some ppl, im looking to “git gud”.

Any tips for fighting the usual GS/ x + Sh and Killshot builds?

Bonus points for tips on fighting DH’s. (I don’t run Bandit’s Defence, but precision/power siggys (sometimes take impairing daggers, i am switching them up) and shadowstep with basi or impact strike.

Earn a cookie if someone knows a decent godzerker and/or DH who wouldn’t mind sparring with me to give tips on fighting them.

I’m no thief pro but if possible avoid a 1v1 with any warrior build that runs def and endure pain will either take to long or a simple mistake will get u killed more so compared to other classes .

On that note though I’m going to have to say blinds and poison and watching berserk so you know when to back off. Also learning what each warrior animations/range especially something like arc divider on gs or skull crusher on mace. Be wary of using head shot when/if they switch to shield as you don’t want to reflect yourself. A good amount of warriors also open with headtbutt if you are able to dodge/evade it that’s normally a great sign to be extremely aggressive as they won’t have enough immediate adrenal to pop berserk.

Some other things that are useful when facing warios are things like using warrior steal ability inside a black powder field its a great offensive and defensive means against warriors They don’t have the fastest attack rates outside of initial berserk so blind spams are highly effective against them. Hopefully others can give more advice but those are some things I can think of off the top of my head.

Yeah, it seems zerkers and DH are my top 2 Banes (I mean guard is already a teefs long time bane) so I need to find 2 players who are decent and l2 fight them.

I know blind works, however the no visible warmup when melee for headbutt tell me I have no more than 1s to gtfo and kite like ive never kited before. Wasfun yesterday to burst one and forced him to pop his passive endure pain (backstab baby). I was totally surprised (im sure I even verbally indicated such on my stream lol)

Are we talking about pvp or wvw here?

If you really going to duel them (which i wouldn’t suggest) it would be a reaaaalllllyyyyyyy long fight if they run endure pain and defy pain. Then again zerkers are by far easier than their condi brothers.

Same goes for DHs, long fight – you need to go through all their CDs, there is just no way around it.

The reason why those two gives thieves the most issues is just stupid amount of passives and instant spells.

Lots of DH like to use their leap heal when they are out of blocks and stability. If you can save an interrupt that will cut them down quite a bit. I can write more on this later.

Zerkers normally aren’t a huge problem for me because I run condi and once resistance runs out (sooner with well timed boonstripping) I just need to chip away at their hp. My suggestions are generally to practice your kiting skills and if you use basi venom to use that to break their first block chain. The trick is to use stealth to reposition and keep them guessing where you are. On P/D shadow strike helps with keeping me out of melee range. If they run rifle then you need to line of sight and focus more on stealth because rifle is single target and you should be able to hit and run better.

The problem with 1v1ing either of those classes, is that you have to play flawlessly while they have so many “fail safe”s its almost laughable.

Warrior:
Most (!) warriors start a fight in a similar manner. Usually its Sh#4 → headbutt. Dodging the headbutt is super important as it denies them quick access to their zerker-mode, which makes the fight FAR more relaxing. Other than that, I have found the following things to work pretty well against them:

a) DON’T spam dodges. Warriors have so many short-CD nukes/CCs that you definitely don’t want waste evades on autohits.
b) Hit-and-run tactics work really well. Both weaponsets of the zerker-meta build are melee only, so keeping them at bay when you expect a CC-chain to come is a good idea.
c) Blinds and Poison are your best friend. Blinds, especially from ShadowShot (where the blind part actually IS unblockable), are a good way to preserve dodges and make the warrior waste important CDs. When they use their shield block for instance and you blind them THROUGH it, their followup is essentially kittened. Poison-upkeep is also pretty nice, since it reduces their passive regen. The only thing you have to be very careful about, is when they pop their berserker stance and gain resistance in general. Just disengage for a bit, recover some initiative/endurance and re-engage once it has run out.
d) Try to keep an eye at their buff bar as good as you can. Missing a zerker-stance or wasting initiative while endure/defy pain are active can seriously ruin your momentum, making you lose the fight in the long run. Just disengage/kite them whenever they use those those CDs.
e) When they are on GS, don’t stay in melee when you are close to (or under) 50% hp. A single arc divider, while under the 50% threshold, can literally end you.

In conclusion: 1v1s against warriors are ALWAYS tedious and drawn out. Bait their CDs and safely w8 them out. Utilize hit-and-run tactics and try to keep up posion and blinds as good as you can. Once they are out of CDs, safely grind them down.

For DHs it’s practically the same, although I honestly haven’t come up with a good/reliant way to beat them. Kiting them is not an option with their ranged pressure and instant-teleports. This matchup is definitely the most difficult for a thief, so I really would recommend to avoid it as good as you can.

The best thing about the DH from the perspective of the thief is that do not have stuns or dazes. Of my builds the most success I have had on them is with my p/d condition with boon theft via RS and BT. P/P with staff also works but you have to be able to get in behind them once they throw those blocks up. They tend to come at you while blocking frontally . I like Shadow trap for this myself as it puts me in behind them when they fire it up. Immob works good against them too . (The P/d build i speak of can keep them at bay with high immob access)

With the DH you really have to avoid that spear pull and the port with trap drops.

With the warrior a lot depends on their resistance availability. If you can keep that off them you can try and keep your blinds and poisons and and I have also found cripples/chills can work nicely in your kites. Most take shield mastery over dogged march. I play a couple of builds with p/p set for ranged and found ghost pepper popper rather useful when it night with my high crit rate build. You can pretty well keep a combo of chill and cripple on them into perpetuity until that resistance pops up and doing this happens as you use your regular attacks meaning it not an either or situation.

For DH, forcing them off their trap setups (sadly, Scorpion Wire seems to work the best when it works) and not letting them setup a static point to fight on seems key. Kiting from range seems to be a good option as well, especially if running condi with a shortbow and using the unblockable poison field. Kite until the DH’s defenses are depleted along with hp, then (careful of traps) burst to kill.

If you can hit DH with Mace Crack that is worth a lot. Bonus points if you can hit them mid leap. It has a nice windup so just hit it and steal for increased odds of it connecting. Bonus you can get a second mace crack off for chain stun goodness.

DH may be able to reset a couple of times with heals and cooldown resets, but that reset takes so long you just need to be patient with your burst and push them after the block spam expires.

I also use the unblockable poison on shortbow to keep them on their toes. Fun fact, with the regular damage on first hit of the field you can transfer venoms to the DH as well, totally unblockable.

DH bow suffers from the same issue that all projectiles have. LoS. Use your mobility to stay outside of LoS and strike when you need to. Don’t forget you are the most mobile not just because you can travel long distances quickly.

Answer is vs warrior you force there endure pain just run up to them backstab set them to 50% then run away let endure pain time out come back kill him.

guardian kinda tricky depending on there build really only thing you should be scared of is spear and dragon maw. other then that you just headshot whenever they do have stab auto them

Things to watch out for before deciding to go on the offense: resistance, blocks, endure pain spam, stability spam.

The problem is they can all be rotated effortlessly. So, timing is key.

It’s also a long fight, and thieves are kitten the longer a fight lasts. So, avoid it. Don’t waste your time and do what thieves do best…run away.

Okay based on what you said, this is what i would run if i was new o the build. so i’m basing my info on this build. my utility skills are likely not what you are running but i think most stuff will be close. normally when I run thief i’m running a condi evasion cheese build which eats warriors for breakfast lunch and dinner, but surprisingly a large amount of what i know from that comes into play here.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vZAQRAoa6an0MB9OhFmCemCkmiFYCbuDeCXheph4QbQLBEAyAA-TJRBABXt/AZlBA4JAY8JBAA

Set Up
Before deciding to fight a warrior one on one the most important thing to remember is to choose the fight. Do not ever engage a warrior on equal terms. If he sees you and starts heading your way, get out of there and wait until you have the drop on him. only then can the fight begin.
If he gets the drop on you, run away and reset

Opening Move

  • Begin in stealth. You don’t have to stack tons of stealth, but be very good at getting into and out of stealth. (remember to look directly down when stacking stealth it will allow you to stack more stealth because you’ll leap a shorter distance, but it will also allow you to utilize your stealth duration more effectively (less time spent stacking means more stealth you are actually using
  • From stealth: Impairing Daggers>Bound(if you have it)+Steal>BS (bound Messes it up).
With good RNG you should take him down to 49% HP with this opening move. Impairing daggers deals small 1000hp chunks of damage. Your Impairing daggers should land just AFTER your backstab. There is a chance, a very small chance, that you will take the warrior to only 50-51%% hp with the initial attack. This is actually very good, because it means you will get up to two big hits in before their Defy pain procs. This is because Defy Pain procs at 49% hp so if you hit them for 5k at 50% health they are only NOW below the 50% HP mark, your next hit will do damage and proc Defy Pain. (unless they stealth patched this) if this happens you will take the warrior down to about 20% hp in the Blink of an eye. If not your damage will stop at 49%

The Baiting Game Defy Pain (5s)
Don’t think even for a second that a warrior will just proc endure pain right after defy pain ends. some will, and there is no defined moment to do it, so you have to take the initiative. (ah the puns) you want to MAKE him use Endure pain by maintaining pressure. you can do this in a number of ways with your build. if you did not opt to go stealth after your follow up you can use your P/P at this point. here is what you can do in the mean time.

  • Attack from range with P/P Auto attack
  • Bait bandit’s defense by getting in close.
  • Prep Venoms from stealth
  • Annoy the crap out of him with evasion spam with bound or Lotus (if you have one of them)

There are tons of preparation options. Right at the end of defy pain you’ll want to use a small burst. I suggest one of the following.

  • Headshot>;Unload: If the warrior does not proc Endure pain before headshot he’ll take a pulmonary impact, if he STILL does not use endure pain he’s probably blocking so don’t use This one in that case (reflected unload hurts). If he is NOT blocking, headshot him again.
  • Headshot>Shadowshot>Bound (towards him, because he’ll be moving): This one is initiative heady, but it takes advantage of Pulmonary Impact.
  • Shadow Shot> Impact Strike 1>2>3: This one takes advantage of pulmonary impact 2 times. it hurts and has the potential to kill outright on a -50% warrior. if the warrior does not use Endure Pain here he’s either stupid or blocking.
  • Shadow Shot: Just Shadow Shot. he cannot block it meaning he has to negate it in another way. Sure it gets you close to him, but you can evade constantly to dive in and dive out.

The End Game Endure Pain (5s) (Defy pain 50-55s cooldown depending on if the warrior blocked or not)
Okay, The warrior has used Endure Pain. The fight is now 5 seconds from won. You have saved your biggest burst through his Defy pain, now you just sit back and prepare your last push. at the end of endure pain

  • Impairing daggers>Bound(if you have it)+steal+Backstab+Impact strike 1>2>3

Overtime
So your combo did not kill him, ether he’s running a burst heal, has an extra block, or you just messed it up. No problem you still have time to second to kill him (10-15 seconds depending on when he used block) your build has you covered.

  • headshot> Unload: gets a pulmonary impact past a sheild and interrupts a block
  • Headshot>Shadowshot
  • Shadowshot>heart seeker
  • Black Powder> Bound(if you have it) or heart seeker>backstab
  • Heartseeker

Final thoughts

  • The rotations may change depending on your build, I like impacting disruption but I realize it messes up backstab. It’s not mandatory for this build and you may want to run Escapist’s Absolution. (I like it better)

(Finished. Wow that was too long)

Extra points!! Guardian!
From stealth: Bound (for the buff don’t hit with it)>Impairing Daggers>Steal+BS>Fist Flurry>Impact Strike

This combo does tons of smaller Damage ticks which will erase the Guardian. if he for some reason is still alive Heart Seeker should finish him. By the end of the combo you should pretty much have everything you need to reset.

(note: it does not erase warriors because of defy pain. saddly)

Actually I’d class condi chrono or Dh noobs friendly but I’ll bite.
Your getting killed by a warrior pressing 2 buttons? (auto attack and endure pain? Like not even dodging?)
That’s pretty bad and I don’t feel any advice will help you beat a warrior.

Joking aside just remember you play the most mobile class and have evades for days, just proc their immune to damage skills and kite around then finish them off.
While the stances are awesome they have large cool downs and endure pain is only immune to physical damage so make sure to keep poison up.
Also dont let them f1 burst if possible as it procs adrenal health turning them into a regen bot.
I think if you play a warrior for a few weeks you’ll realise once a class leaves melee range they it’s all about chasing and slowly getting whittled down.
A thief who is aware of this is a nightmare for a warrior and can take them down.

Finally check out some thief videos on YouTube and see how they do it because it is definitely possible and good thief’s make it look easy.

I find that Basi venom is blockable / stability can negate it (Aegis and warriors shield blocks it, always thought it was unblock-able and went through stab)

Basi absolutely beats warrior shield 5… happens to me all the time. I strongly recommend you run Bandit’s and keep it ready in case you screw up and eat a Headbutt (or get shield bashed and expect a Headbutt to follow).

BD has a better cd than Headbutt, and that’s the skill that’s leading to your 2-3 move death (whenever that happens). If you get caught with it, just the damage from it can take 40-50% of your health, and then the pain train will start.

Staff is far more than just vault. It has a rnaged blind, and high uptime on weakness (especially if you have weakening strikes). Added to that the reflect on the AA has saved me from the DHs ranged attacks more then a few times . While one not able to control that reflect timing as readily as some other types of reflect , it does give ranged users pause when one of their own attacks comes back at them. (when a warrior at range with rifle I just churn through my staff AA as I move around)

As to bound or dash. Bound is more offensive, dash much better defensively. A good warrior can lock in on your bound animation and time his heatbutt for when you in those vulnerable frames. This is much harder to do against dash.

I find against a warrior that Dash just works better for me as it better allows kites and does not expose me as easily to the warriors stuns and CC.

The downside to Hyrdromancy is if you do stealth a lot it can expose you on a weapon swap. That said the advantages of Hyrdo are very real. You can time your iterations for when it needed rather then count on an RNG , (at the expense of the cooldown) , it AOE and gives that added chill. It can crit and and hit for decent damage ( Isee more damage single use on it then an air sigil). It not so easy to shrug off as you might think as most warriors are not going to use a cleanse just to get at a short lasting chill while at he same time that added two seconds can allow you to get some extra damage in or escape.

Where I find it the most useful is in finishing a kill when I am low on health myself. I have about 1k more health on my staff set over my p/p set given staff is melee and I think it needed more there. If in p/p and a fight razor thin close, i can swap to staff, get that exra health , be assured I do a few k in damage to the enemy on swap and have a bit of time to get some more whacks in. This will often turn a close fight in my favor.

Added to that while a thief is able to cleanse chills readily I also like using that swap when an enemy thief stealths in melee. It can really put a crimper on his backstab when coupled with that added cooldown to the same and the damage is often enough to put one with low health into a downed state.

Play like a kitten.
Dodge to stay out of harms way (make use of LoS and Kiting to improve CD management), then sometimes do some quick sneaky hits with Shadowshot and AA’s (keep up poison on Warriors!). Try to interrupt the DH’s F2 and really make sure to dodge/interrupt/LoS the DH’s F1 now that it reveals.
P/P should make it easier because you don’t have to get in their range too much.

Condi or Acro in the mix makes the fights MUCH easier. Even SB allows you to plink them while using Disabling Shot to stay out of their range.

Revealed actually does me more good than harm as a DD (Revealed Training ftw, lol)

If they want to give me a +200 power boost unknowingly, then I thank them as I dont need to waste my init to stealth to do it. Thanks for the tips. I am finding shadowshot mixed with a few AA’s really do help.

DH’s is all abou tP/P and nailing an interrupt for that sweet sweet Pulmonary Impact

You need to bait one endure and proc the second. Get the opening strike, preferably a good backstab and sink as much damage as you can. Once it starts to react, 90% of the time that reaction will be to endure into their counter. Back off. No point in wasting effort until it wears off. Procing the second should be straight forward. Get a nice strong hit in and you should be able to proc it. If not, back up again and keep distance, but know that you will need to shorten the time between your next attack.

Once second procs, back off and don’t waste unnecessary effort. After that, it’s a cake walk. Rinse and repeat.
